Hello patrons! I'm looking at a favourite finger-style tune of mine this week. Quite easy to play and a really good practical example of some of the essential picking patterns I was talking about in my video a few weeks back. Here's a link to the video -

As I say in the video it's quite a widely covered tune. I particularly like Nick Drake's version - take a listen if you've not heard it -

My tab can be found below. I've written out the first 3 verses in full. In some places the acoustic is a bit buried under the vocal so it's hard to hear exactly what's going on, but I think this is broadly accurate. The subsequent verses are very similar, with just some small variations. Once you get a feel for the song it's probably best to do it your own way rather than stick too slavishly to the tab. Hope you enjoy learning the song.

Speak next week,

Adrian

I love this song. I've been a little disturbed recently by seeing the claim that it's a knock-off of 'Gone, gone, gone' by the Everly Brothers. I'd have to admit the melody of the first line or two is similar, but I don't really think it's a copy in the real sense. What does anyone here think?

John Lyle

Beginner here - loving the tab and can get through it pretty cleanly but can't figure out where the lyrics fit. Can anyone help?

Stanley Harvey

Always loved this song and now I can play it! Quite a few tutorials on YouTube but yours was the best I found, thank you!

Erik Kundrats

Hi Adrian, Thanks for making this video and tab. This song is perfect for me as I have just started finger picking. Nice to hear your singing with the song!

Michael Nitski

This is a great tune, thanks for working on it!

Steve Anderson

Great choice Adrian! I've just been reading a biography about him. What a tragic life but how influential he was.

Fin

You can really hear the influence on Paul Simon. Liked the Nick Drake version. Thank you for the lesson.

James Beard

Another great finger style lesson, thank you! Love the John Fahey and Bert Jansch lessons too. Any chance of some Kurt Vile? Keep up the good work!

Thanks Erik. Yes, strongly recommend this song as a good beginner's finger picking piece. Enjoy learning it!

Yes, a very sorry tale. Wasn't aware of the biography, might have to check it out.

Yes, definite Paul Simon influence. I'm pretty sure Paul Simon produced the album - I dare say he was giving Jackson some guitar tips along the way.

Thanks James. Yes, I'd definitely consider doing some Kurt Vile, think he's great. Any particular song you'd like to see?

James Beard

There's some great finger style songs on Believe I'm Goin' Down. Maybe 'All in a Daze Work' or 'Stand Inside', they're both great. Probably in an unusual tuning though?

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Steve - might have to give that a read. Funnily enough, I got a request from someone else a couple of days ago for some Bebop Deluxe. I'm not super familiar with the band, but really like what I've heard. May well try and do a Bill Nelson lesson later this year.

jesús Garrido

Thanks for this, I discover a new artist with your video!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, if you don't know him, check out the entire Blues Run The Game album - it's a great listen.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, great - I know the songs to listen too. Not sure about the tunings - will investigate!

Impeccable taste as always Adrian (admittedly a self referential way of saying I like it too)! As you note, his bio is pretty grim. I don't know if you've read any David Mitchell, but Frank's about the only mid 60s London folkie not name checked in Utopia Avenue, which overall disappointed me, wondered if you'd read, for me not in the same league as Black Swan Green. Anyhow, thanks again! If you're ever up for more mid 60s fingerpicking, check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fff4S4iXE9Q . As for Kurt Vile (mentioned by another poster) I vote for Jesus Fever.

Read some reviews of Utopia Avenue, and I might well give it a try. I read Cloud Atlas a long time ago which I enjoyed, but none of the others. Jesse Colin Young is a new name to me - sounds great though! And seriously considering some looking at Kurt Vile - your suggestion has been noted!
