I'm a big Elliott Smith fan but this is the first time I've looked at any of his music on my channel. I've chose a great little instrumental track from his debut solo record Roman Candle. I didn't intend for the video to be quite this long but I ended up going into lots of nerdy detail about all the guitar parts in the track. Hope you find it interesting. here's the link -

And the tab is attached below, 3 tabs: acoustic, main electric part, and second electric part. The acoustic tab is just a rough approximation of the part; best to just strum away and not overthink it.

Have fun and speak next week,

Adrian

thanks for this adrian, elliot smith is often overlooked i feel. he has an ear for a tune, and the best timing with his technique. just stunning.

Another ACPG classic, thanks Adrian. I've been meaning to ask for a while, but since you mentioned it in the video, do you put anything on your guitar strings when you are putting them away for a while? I always wipe mine down after playing, but it feels like they go crusty after a couple of weeks of inactivity.

Absolute quality. It's like you weren't sure what the video was going to end up like when you started, but as it progressed you started to follow where it lead you, and it turned out to be one of your best. I imagine the tune being written in a similar way.

Thanks! The day before you posted this I was thinking that Elliott Smith’s guitar playing is a bit under-appreciated and that it would be great to see you break down one of his songs. Neat to see this appear the next day!

Yes, you're right. He's clearly a great songwriter, but his guitar playing both acoustic and electric is fantastic too.

Thanks Jeff! Yes, this was a fun video to make. Sometimes I have a loose script or idea about the direction I want a video take, other times I just see where it takes me. Because I'm such an ES fan it was quite easy for me to ramble nerdily on about all the details of this track!

I probably should do that, but I don't. The strings on my Martin were still OK, despite not having been playing for several months. (I do like quite played in strings though.) I do sometimes use Fast Fret, mainly on my electrics. It reduces string squeak and makes position shifts less sticky. But it's also supposed to clean the strings. Might be worth giving that a try.

I might have found a slight error on the pdf for the acoustic part, Bridge. It goes C, B7, E, C . Adrian omitted the "B7" in the notation and mistakenly wrote "F" for the "E", if I well understood. And, I understood it anyway following the fret numbers, its all good. Lovely song. All respect.

Yes, absolutely right - must have rushed tabbing that bit out and messed up the chord symbols. Now fixed and re-uploaded - thanks for pointing this out!

Is that a mustang bridge on your JM? Also wondering what gauge strings you use on it? Great song choice and lesson. Thanks for the inspiration week after week!

I was somehow wholly unaware of Elliot Smith, but I just heard of him again today--this time from your telepathic partner, Eric Haugen.

I love Elliott Smith so much. I can't wait to give this lesson a try. I've seen Elliott Smith many times, including when he was with Heatmiser, and have always thought that his guitar skill was overshadowed by his amazing songwriting.
