So I thought I'd attempt to learn a few of the solos from last week's video properly. And this week I'm looking at Glenn Tilbrook's fabulous solo from the Squeeze classic Another Nail In My Heart. It's quite a challenging solo to play at full speed, but like with anything else, if you take it slowly, lick by lick, it's do-able.

I also whizz through the chords and the rhythm guitar part, for those of you who want to learn the rest of the song.

Here's the link -

And the tab is attached below. (2 tabs, one for the rhythm, one for the solo.)

Have fun with it, and speak next week,

Adrian

this was transcribed in the May 1998 issue of Guitar For The Practicing Musician with Jerry Cantrell on the cover! looking forward to comparing the transriptions and finally properly learning it!

David Pollock

That was an awesome lesson Adrian! so much to learn , but brilliant!, Thank you .

Thanks Adrian! Brilliant! (Now the torture of waiting one more week in quarantine in Singapore without my guitar! 😆) . Greg

Chris Williams

Amazing choice of solo! I was lucky to meet the composer many years ago in Toronto following a show.

Eric Larsen

Nice one, Adrian! Thank you!

Thanks Chris! Never met Tilbrook, but he comes across as a thoroughly nice chap.

Chris Williams

He was very nice indeed. Chris Difford was nice as well. The bass player....not so much

Such a thrill to follow along & learn this favourite, so good, thankyou especially the theory context. I went to their video from back in the day for fun & is that McGeoch's Yamaha SG1000 that Glenn Tilbrook plays. I want one. I saw Johnny Marr's other guitar player James Doviak used one last tour.

Eric

So happy you chose this solo. Tilbrook is a great example of structured solos over chord changes. In Quintessence and Is That Love also have solos of similar structure. This is so cool. Thank you!

Seemed pretty obvious from your solos video that this was coming soon -- I think you already had it ready to go! ;) True Squeeze classic! I've always liked this song, but seeing it broken down musically makes it even better. I'm working on the rhythm part now. Thanks again!

Sean Galloghly

This is, IMHO, the greatest guitar solo of all time! It does exactly what a solo should do - it gets in, does its job and gets out again. Rather than the song stopping for the solo, the solo simply moves the song along... and I'm going to nail that blazingly fast bit if it kills me!!! (and, if it does, at least I'll die happy!)

Thanks so much Adrian! I suggested this in the early days, but you "nailed it" (bad pun). The other one I like "Black Coffee In Bed" , Mr. Tilbrook teaches himself in Garageband! Cheers

anyonecanplayguitar

haha I love a pad pun, would have used that in the video if I'd thought of it! I didn't know there was a Black Coffee In Bed lesson from GT himself - I must check it out.

Anyone know why I can’t get teh solo PDF to open anymore? Used to work.

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Meeno. Did you manage to access the PDF? It's working here for me. Maybe try on another computer/device? I can always email it to you if problems persist.
