I have a bit of a summer special for you this week, with an in-depth look at this fantastic Hüsker Dü track. I thought this would be quite a straight-forward song to figure out, but there's a lot more going on here than there seems. Great songwriting and riffs, and some interesting soloing towards the end of the song. I even get my 12 string out. Here's a link to the video:

I've tabbed it all out below. It's always a bit tricky tabbing out this kind of music, so take my tab as a guide rather than a note for note representation of what's on the record.

Hope you enjoy working on the tune. I'm currently taking a short summer break, so no video next week. I will be taking some time to think about and plan videos for the rest of the year, so lesson ideas and song requests very welcome!

Thanks as ever to everyone here for your amazing support. Speak in a couple of weeks,

Adrian

Any chance of looking into "Real World"? Love that song. It's so fast and there's so much going on it almost sounds like 2 guitars.

Stephen

Any chance of Chartered Trips? Probably their first signature melody + distortion song. Most grunge bands of the 90's would have fallen over themselves to have written it. Several distinct parts to get your teeth into, great stuff.

Song Request: A further plea for Gillian Welch's Elvis Presley Blues. Great song and wonderful playing by David Rawlings

I've really enjoyed your recent 7th arpeggios lessons. Anything in a similar vein would be great! As for song requests - anything by Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Pavement/Malkmus, or Kurt Vile would be amazing :-)

Sam Dean

great suggestions - anything pavement related would be a godsend as there really aren't many good pavement lessons that i've been able to find... and kurt vile's most recent album bottle it in is fantastic.

Thank you for this one, made me sign up -- Bob Mould is my #1 Guitar God, actually. His solo work is just great, and at over 60 now he's loud as ever and nowhere near any "sell out"... I'd love a thing on "Panama City Motel" or "Gift" by Sugar, Bob Mould's 90s Band. Or anything by the vastly underrated and forgotten Swell, like "Song Seven". Have a great summer and thanks for the great work :-)

Oliver Darjeeling

One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Thank you!! Enjoy your summer break.

Jeff Runnels

Yup! This song made me a Patreon supporter as well. Also, I'll be seeing Bob with band playing here in Austin in October. 😊

Hi Adrian, lots of smiles from that lesson. My favorite Hüsker Dü track is All This I've Done for You, from Candy Apple Grey; still remember its place on the mix tape, right after Goo Goo Muck and right before Frank's Wild Years. Thanks again for all the super videos, have a great break.

Lucky You! I hope he plays in Germany some time. I‘d even travel to Berlin…

David Lopez

plot twist: we get vocals this week \m/(*-*)\m/

Matthew Shotton

Have a great holiday! You’ve earned it! Great tune

Scott

Thanks so much for this Adrian! Such a brilliant song!

Mark Franklin

Brilliant not Shambolic at all👏🏻

Aaron Deas

There is so much good song writing here. Thank you for tackling it! I need to watch this video a few more times.

Absolutely top tier lesson here Adrian! Love the droning stuff. I enjoyed your performance with vocals as well! Have a great weekend!

CC

I am all in for this request.

CC

Yes! 🤠

MightyProJet

Didn't they also sell out on every subsequent album if I remember correctly :)

Alberto Lombardini

Great song from the greatest band! Both Bob and Grant were amazing songwriters, Bob guitar had something special. Any chance for "Chartered trips" one day?

Freek Vreys

Hi Adrian, massive thanks for transcribing this one for us! I saw on your website that you're working on music of your own. Do you have a band? Or do you have any records out solo or in a band? Really curious, would love to hear it.

Michel

Thanks for the great lessons Adrian! As for song requests, something from The Soft Boys would be great - there's some fantastic guitar (inter)playing on their records.

Chris Williams

Enjoy your holiday! As for requests, how about "Drift Away?" I would love to hear you explain why the fills work.

Erik Nelson

Love the Husker Du stuff. Maybe dust off the 12 string for Too Far Down? More Minutemen (Sickles and Hammers?). Some Television (See No Evil?) I'd love to see some Sleater Kinney, though that's a lot of 2-guitar part songs (Start Together?). Don't think you've ever done Mission of Burma (This is Not a Photograph?). I'd love to see you take apart a Sonic Youth song or two, though in all honesty I doubt I'd re-string a guitar just to learn one of their songs. Thanks for all the great material!

Thomas Wilkinson

Thanks Adrian this is great - if I could be cheeky and make a request I’d love you to do some B52s or more Velvet Underground. Have a good summer!

Hello Adrian, Thanks for the Hüsker Dü. I don't know if you really nailed that pronunciation. Have you studied Minnesotan? Hope you're having a good holiday. Since you asked, a Feelies tune would be good. I'm partial to the solo on "The High Road." It's an easy tune really, but the guitar solo is quite good.

Russell Fischer

yes you have the pronunciation correct. according to Bob Mould, "we are not a band of husks"

Russell Fischer

a Feelies fan(? )(!) check out Wooden Shijps I think you'll like

Richard Tock

Song request : They're far from your usual and I'm not sure you'd be interested, but Frightened Rabbit are a huge favourite of mine, and there's very little out there about their playing. I'd like to see something like Modern Leper, but again, I think it's maybe a song carried by the rawness of it's vocal and maybe the guitar isn't that interesting.

Growing up in Minneapolis I was lucky to stumble into Husker Du playing in a dirt parking lot one afternoon in the early 80's. Ever since then they've been one of my favorite bands. It was great seeing the video for Celebrated Summer! I wish this was available years ago when I was learning to play the song in college! I have a song request that you're under no obligation to honor: the Beatles version of Besa me Mucho. Yes, it's a little quirky, but would be fun to learn.

anyonecanplayguitar

Oh to just stumble into Husker Du in a parking lot...amazing! Glad you liked this one. Nice Beatles requests too...you're right, it could definitely make for a quirky and fun lesson. Will add it to me list!
