Afternoon all! Today I'm looking at a brilliant but lesser-known track by The Verve. It's a wonderful, atmospheric guitar part played - I think - in an open G6 tuning. Here's a link to the video -

I've tabbed out the main parts below. I've not written out all the jammy, outro stuff, but I give you some ideas in the video how you might approach playing this part of song. Hope you enjoy!

Speak next week,

Adrian

This is awesome Adrian thanks! How about some epic Nick McCabe from "Storm in Heaven"?

Steve Holderness

Ah this is fantastic - A Northern Soul is an absolute brilliant album.. You bloody spoil us!!

Kyle Johnson

I love how meditative this song is. Will definitely check out this album now.

Neal McGrath

Just been going through a cheeky “Verve phase” so this is perfect timing!

Paul Brown

Superb Adrian. I asked for some Nick McCabe some time ago and you said you'd add it to your list. I thought you were just being polite....bless you. Not many people sound like McCabe, he has a knack of writing deeply atmospheric songs. Thanks!

Ian Threadgold

Just listened to storm in heaven for first time in 25 years and blew my mind again

It's interesting how people are suddenly realising the pre-Bittersweet Symphony Verve were primo 90s 'shoegaze'!! I always wrote them off as being too industry and wanky at the time, I only 'rediscovered' them late last year, and while the first record feels slightly unfinished, they are some really great and interesting classic Pommy-drugrock guitarscapes!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, the album's fantastic - took me a little while to get into it, but it's well worth the effort.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, likewise, been re-aquainting myself with their music and in some cases hearing stuff for the first time. Quite an amazing body of work.

anyonecanplayguitar

My pleasure Paul! Yes, I always make a note of interesting requests and try and get round to as many as I can. A few people requested some Verve ,so there's obviously a lot of love for them and McCabe's playing out there.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, that's the next record of their's I want to get into - will give it a proper spin this week.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, totally agree - once Bittersweet Symphony started to get played everywhere from adverts to the football it kind of put me off. But I'm loving the 'Pommy-drugrock guitars capes' as you excellently put it!

Haroun Haroun

it's all Gilmour and Fripp and Manzanera's fault! hahaha..Apparently Richard Ashcroft started writing 'hits' and they became less of a spacerock type of band and more Britpop..etc

Great lesson as always! How aboout taking a look at another Banshees track? Christine for instance, full og lovley little guitar parts

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks! Yes, might well be time for another Banshees track soon. Christine would be an opportunity for me to break out my 12-string again. Will see what I can do!

Rolf Gromme

Fantastic track. In the video bit called "Other parts" there is a real nice solo, starting at 17:44. Unfortunately I am not good enough to figure that out myself. Is it possible to get a tab for that one?

Thomas Wilkinson

Glad you did some McCabe stuff (I must have missed it a year ago) and you really nailed the sound. He usually used either a strat or a Gibson ES style guitar, and I guess must have been the latter for this one. The Les Paul sounds perfect. If you could do more Verve in future it would be great. Especially the early stuff. Cheers!
