In this week's video I'm sharing one of my favourite tricks for spicing up triads in a soloing situation. Here's a link to the video -

https://youtu.be/VyuJKrL9U5g

Below you can find a tab for my solo at the start of the video, as well as a PDF of all the triad shapes I discuss.

The backing track is coming up in the next post.

Hope you find the lesson interesting and helpful!

Never did find the backing track for this (only the tab), but I can probably create my own.

I'd be riding horses if they let me... Thanks, this is great

What a great lesson Adrian! I have gotten a ton of mileage out of your triad lessons and I still use the fun and musical major and minor triad backing tracks as warm ups for practice. Been working on your Venus by Television lesson this week for the lovley triad phrases in that song. Can you recommend any other complete song lessons that use extensive triad shapes please? Preferably something post punkish/indie. Thanks again!

Thanks Adrian, great lesson with fantastic resources including the diagrams. It must’ve been a lot of work for you! It is much appreciated.

I never thought I would ever learn Venus, but Adrian made it easy and did all the hard work figuring it out. Now I play it all time.

Another exceptional "plug and play" lesson. And yes, I stayed until the end of the video.

Thanks Philip. Yes, Venus does have a lot of triad-ish phrases. They crop up in a lot of songs, though now you put me on the spot of course, nothing specific springs to mind! I will come back and give you an update once I think of something appropriate.

Thanks Matthew. Yes, the tabs and the diagrams do take a bit of work to put together, but it's oddly enjoyable doing it. And it's important that I give my Patrons value for money - I very much appreciate everyone's support on here.

Thanks Chris! A surprising number of people have said they always watch until the end, so maybe my worries that people are drifting off in boredom after a couple of minutes are unfounded!

The solo was nice too. By flowing through the root instead of starting off on the root, you created a really nice melody. When I worked through your excellent charts, I made sure to avoid starting on the root.

Adrian - question about the theory in your opening piece you wrote and played in your triads video. It has a melancholy - or maybe an introspective vibe. It's def NOT a major or uplifting feel. What is giving it this vibe. Is it the 2nd? Or is it that adding the C makes it mixolydian "bittersweet"? I like the flavor for sure. I just wanted to know what's driving this emotion.

When it comes emotions and music it's all a bit subjective, but for me the mixolydian is the ultimate bittersweet kind of sound. The major scale can be a bit too 'happy' and do re mi, but just adding the b7 seems to give it a bit of a melancholy feeling.

Station2Station

Understood. I was just trying to find the element in your piece that was giving it the introspective vibe. It’s not a dark vibe but more introspective. Maybe bitter sweet. Almost “coming to terms with“. Feelings are hard to put into words. Anyway it was well done.

Adrian - Where can I find the TAB for your intro as it is not below as you say??? I like to analyse where you hit the notes in relation to the chord playing or just about to play etc. Sorry but I am a bit of a nerd for this sort of thing.

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Brian - it should be right there attached to the end of the post - 'triads with 2nd.pdf' If it's not showing up for some reason, let me know and I'll try and fix it.
