I've spent this week reading the excellent new John McGeoch biography, so how could I not look at at song featuring the great man's work for today's video. I've decided to go for a lesser-known track, by The Armoury Show, the band McGeoch joined after Siouxsie and the Banshees. Castles in Spain has a proper, bombastic 80s production but features some typically stellar guitar work from McGeoch. Here's a link to the video:

And I've tabbed everything out below.

Hope you enjoy. Speak next week,

Adrian

Thanks Adrian. Really appreciating this.

Jim Kiley

Great! I'm sorry but before I even look at your music post I'm going to look up this Mcgeoch biography and see if it is available in the states yet. If so I'll immediately order. Then I'll have alook at your post and I'm certain it will be brilliant as always. Happy weekend, Adrian (June 23 release date over here -FYI)

Dan Richards

This is so great! Would you consider looking at some early Suede at some point? Love Bernard Butler's playing — very melodic in odd ways, like McGeoch in several ways. A lesson on something like 'Sleeping Pills' off the 1st Suede record would be fantastic. Much in common with Smiths and Magazine song approaches, I think.

John C. Alsedek

Love it! My friend Russell was in The Armoury Show, so I might learn this one and give him a chuckle at my bad McGeoch impression. lol

Robert Frame

Russell Webb. Excellent musician. Fantastic partnered with John.

Christopher Keep

Great choice. Bring on the post punk lesson series.

Simon Morrison

Do you have a Gizmotron Adrian? Would love an Into the Light Lesson, even though I don't own one either and it'd probably be useful for almost nobody haha. One of my favourite McGeoch tracks though.

Deron

Hey Adrian, I’ve been quietly enjoying your lessons lately. But your McGeoch tendencies lured me back out into the chat… — So many reveals! Yes to McGeoch — I’m also looking forward to getting ahold of this biography. Great song lesson!! I know the tune — it must’ve gotten some radio play in my early music world — but I had little clue about The Armory Show. Finally, a post-punk course! Hooray! I’m in. Thanks for the nerdy dedication! Oh and I love the cute cat moments, too. Cheers, -Deron

Cheers Deron, glad you liked this one. And pleased you hung around for the cute cat moment! The post-punk course is taking shape at the moment. The basic concept is 10 or so bands, 5 songs from each. Magazine, Banshess, PIL, Gang of Four and a few others.

anyonecanplayguitar

I don't, but I was thinking I might get one! You're right it would be an extremely niche kind of lesson, but I could see myself doing it!

anyonecanplayguitar

haha that's amazing. Russell's an amazing musician. He seemed to be very close to McGeoch - lots of interesting contributions from him in the book

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes. I do like BB! Was toying with the idea of looking at one of the early Suede tracks. I'll try and make it happen later in the year.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Jim. Yes, you'll have to wait a bit longer over there for the book! Sure you'll enjoy it.

John C. Alsedek

Jim, if you don't want to wait on the book release, the Kindle version's available- I just read it over the weekend. Soooooooo much interesting stuff in there!

John C. Alsedek

Russell's a character! lol I'd definitely be interested in the post-punk lessons.

Ralph Blair

Hi Adrian, thanks again for making me aware of McGeoch. Re your teasing the post punk course, a small plug for the John Peel version of Song from Under the Floorboards. Side bar question: with your encyclopedic knowledge of this time frame, I wondered if you'd ever checked out the guitar work of the late Ricky Wilson of the B52s. Unusual guitar (Mosrite), strange tunings (eg DADxBB), but IMO a great guitarist, gone too soon, thanks Ralph

Trouble House

Hi Adrian, I've also got the book, I'm going to start reading it this weekend. Loving your McGeoch content. This lesson has had me listening to Waiting For the Floods again. I'd forgotten how much I liked it, particularly the song Avalanche. If you do another song from this album can you make it this one? Thanks

random parade

This is great! Until I started getting into your lessons, I really didn't realize what an amazing guitar player McGeoch was. Can't wait for the post punk guitar course you mentioned.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks. Yes, glad to be able to spread the word about how good McGeoch was - he's long been a favourite of mine. I'm making good progress with the post-punk course, so hope to be able to announce that properly quite soon.

jesús Garrido

Can't wait for the post punk guitar course !

James Marsh

Thanks Adrian for the tablature and video lesson, recently read the John McGeoch book, found it to be excellent, amazing talent and hadn’t heard of the Armoury show before, shame they didn’t get a decent record deal, what might of been…..

Garry Bellenger

Excellent work! Would there be any possibility of arranging a tutorial Magazine "Permafrost"? Cheers

Vinz

There is a video of Adrian playing the solo for Permafrost. Not sure if it was an unlisted YouTube video he only shared through Patreon, or if it was a part of a general video about soloing/bending. I cannot recall which video it was for the life of me.

anyonecanplayguitar

Ah yes, I forgot I did that! I'm actually doing a full lesson on Permafrost in my upcoming post-punk course - I finally learned the whole song properly. So look out for that later in the year.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes! It's going to be in my upcoming post-punk themed course. I learned the whole track recently - so good!!

Garry Bellenger

Thank you for reply Adrian. Can not wait to see you play Permafrost especially the solo!

anyonecanplayguitar

Great thanks Chris! Likewise I was frustrated not to find it on Spotify, Apple Music etc. Definitely deserves a proper reissue. In the meantime this is very helpful.
