Hello all,

I wanted to do a surf tune this week - it's been a while. This is a fabulous early 60s track from Colorado band The Astronauts, which I recently discovered was written by the great Lee Hazlewood.

There's a great palm-muted main theme, some tremolo picking, and a lovely melodic bridge section.

Here' a link to the video -

Tab can be found below. Two versions of the backing track are coming up in the next couple of posts.

Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for transcribing the melody in the bridge! I always just arpeggiated the chords, faking it. Now I know those specific Lee Hazlewood bits and it finally sounds right.

Nice one Adrian! I'm hoping to pick up a 2nd-hand Squier Jaguar tomorrow which will need some work done to it but I intend to get on the Surf train with it once done. On a separate note I've been listening to a bit of Suede recently and wondered if you'd ever consider covering one of theirs? So Young is a favorite I'd love to be able to play along with!

Amazing! Thanks for sharing. I now need to have the whole record in my life!

Thanks Jas! The Jag will be perfect for surf! Yes, a few people have expressed interest in a Suede lesson. Definitely considering it. So Young would work well I think.

Daniele De Santis

According to the liner notes on the record the guitar was likely played by Al Casey but it's uncertain who the musicians were. Apparently Lee couldn't play guitar too well. The tapes went lost for over 50 years are resurfaced in 2018.

Finally a song to hear my Surfybear drip! :)

How am I supposed to practice 'properly' when you keep coming up with great tunes to learn instead? FWIW, I love the C shape barre chord. My horrible tradesman hands make the E shape hard to play up the neck, but the C - no probs!

I clearly need to do some very dry exercises and drills type lessons very soon!

anyonecanplayguitar

You're lucky with the C shape - a lot of people really struggle with it!

Yes, the Surfybear sounded amazing whilst I was making this video! Love it.

I’m always in love with that sacred triad surf music/90s indie rock/ rare grooves . Thanks again Adrian
