Hello all,

Something slightly different this week: a lo-fi, Patreon-only video, in which I give you a brief update on what I've been up to lately as well as a little tour of my studio setup. Hope some of you find it interesting.

The main tutorial videos will of course still be the main focus of what I do, but I thought it might be nice do the odd more spontaneous and relaxed video like this one. Let me know your thoughts about this, and I can try and make it a semi-regular thing.

Speak next Friday,

Adrian

Studio Tour

I wanted to start doing some semi-regular Patreon exclusive videos. I'm kicking things off with an update of what I've been up to lately, and a quick tour of my studio setup. Hope some of you find it interesting.

Steven Reech

Love it! You are one of my faves! I have learned so much from you over the years! Thanks for the behind the scenes!

Kris Chatterson

Sign me up for the Post Punk corse. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the tour!

Greg Sherman

Thanks for the tour... Your production quality is always top notch!

Tony Fletcher

Thank you—cool set-up. For Christmas I got a copy of Tom Petty's "Live at the Fillmore" from 1997 on vinyl. It's great. It's a collection of live recordings over a 20 night run—I would argue when the band was at the height of their powers! Many songs are covers of their favorites, Including "Shakin' All Over" from Johnny Kidd & The Pirates. What a great song. I thought it would be fun to learn and feels pretty approachable, so I searched online and look who has a video tutorial on it? Ha! Thanks for that and keep up all the great work. I look forward to your releases each week.

David Green

Thanks, really interesting. I love that Wurlitzer piano. I’m about a third of the way through your first solo course, having tried others online and in books, and it’s the first time I feel like I’m getting somewhere. The set solos you provide have given me the confidence and core ideas to start improvising a bit. So I’m really looking forward to the new course - when I finish the first one!

Michael

I'm also looking forward to the post punk course, and cool that you're collaborating with Warren Huart: he also has some awesome post punk related videos.

Michael

I also noticed your copy of Oblique Strategies. Do you use them much? I got my copy years ago, but I never seem to run out of ideas, which is when I think I'd turn to them.

Michael Ahearn

Fun video, I like the fireside chat. Keep them coming. I was expecting a tour of you guitar stable perhaps your next “sit down with Adrian” you could go through your guitars and discuss why you bought them, what you use them for, pros/cons, mods etc. We’re all gear geeks here so would be interested in your insights and experiences. Can’t wait for the new courses, especially the post punk series that I think is going to be hugely successful with the right promotion, get a coffee and get back to work! 😉

Fin

Hello Adrian, yes, this was interesting, in a nerdy way. Thanks. In a similar, behind the scenes vein, a video on recording software and process would be cool. I've been wanting to do more long-distance recording projects with people. A few pointers on simple set-ups and mixing would be useful.

Marla Starchild

As some kind of gearhead, I really enjoyed this video! You have some nice things there you didn't even mention, like the little Moog synths and one that looked like a Korg. Thanks for sharing!

Brent Murphy

Great video, would love to see videos on theory how you are using gear.

Jas

Had to stop half way through the video just say Post-Punk course? Yes. I'll be there!!

Mik Shawyer

Always a pleasure to see “behind the scenes” of a YouTuber/musician, cracking studio set up you have there and it obviously works well as your videos are always top notch, thanks for doing what you’re doing, it’s always great to learn stuff you’d not usually delve into and your content choices are a great balance of interesting material, looking forward to the post punk course as your past videos in that vein have always been excellent and a great source of learning and inspiration 👍

Kyle Hull

Love that you are trying a new format. A suggestion for a future angle: book reviews. You mention biographies from time to time, and I'm just wondering what some of your favorite music books are, and why, and what you might recommend for one reason or another. Thanks!

Steve Warner

Thanks Adrian a pleasant distraction form your regular song videos and I thoroughly enjoyed the mini tour! The look around your studio did make me think about the home recording process and perhaps as an alternative to song videos you might have time to explain the equipment and process someone might use/need to start recording their music, starting with a basic setup. Just a thought!

Steve Warner

As an aside I used to worry about the number of guitars I had but after seeing the business end of your studio I might need to worry about the amount of recording equipment I'm going to need - anyway thanks again for all you do to make us better musicians!

nic

Great video Adrian, loved seeing the behind the camera stuff we don’t see in the you tube vids. You got some nice gear there man.

Matthew Shanks

The video was interesting. Been watching you for years so it’s interesting to see behind the scenes as well as being able to check out all of your gear.

Peter Healy

Hi Adrian, I like the idea of these Videos. I found it interesting to see your set up. It is a bit of a lesson in how to make the most of the spaces we have access to. I did the first Solo course and I look forward signing up for both of your new courses. I also watch Warren's Produce like a Pro so I'll stay tuned. As far as these Patreon Patron vids, I would be interested a few videos exploring the process of putting together our own Backing Tracks, as in recording them. Then maybe connecting them to the Music Theory and possible Lead/Solo staring points.???

Michael Waggoner

Thanks Adrian. I find your presentations credible - truthful and competent. So I like hearing your opinion on gear, setup, workflow .. and music.

Jonathan Keane

I humbly and enthusiastically second your plan for a post-punk course! One of my favorite things about your work is that you frequently cast light on under-appreciated players like Andy Gill and John McGeoch and dedicate reverent and painstaking attention to unpacking the nuances that make their playing so special. I've also thought for some time that James Honeyman-Scott is just begging for one of your treatments, so I'm even more excited for this course knowing that he'll be included!

StevenZK

Adrian - your studio is further evidence of the high level of commitment to your top-notch teaching - nothing nerdy about it, just tools of the trade. i'm also taking the solo course and will not miss the new one. i share many of the above suggestions as well, but have also wondered how you replicate the unique sound of a guitar from a recording. what are you listening for and how do you recreate, to my ears anyway, it exactly? i recently stumbled upon a produce like a pro video of a guy named jamie humphries breaking down steely dan's reelin' In the years, a song I have been wanting to learn since it came out... looks like that site might be a good fit for you... looking forward to a long relationship together... thanks for all of it.

Ralph Blair

I really did not have a clear idea of all the technical skills required (in addition to knowing how to play the guitar!) to teach in an on line environment. Also, the capital outlay required, wow. Thanks for this look behind the curtain.

Mr Mont

Thank you for taking the time out to do that, Adrian. I know the youtube grind can be very time consuming. It was very cool to get the behind the scenes view.

Jeff Sims

I found Garageband on Apple stuff to be a good entry point. Very easy to use, main outlay would be a decent usb microphone, then you're flying

Jeff Sims

Soooo many pedals! Nice to spend some relaxed time with you, Adrian

Steve Warner

Thanks for the tip, a good place to start!

John Sellers

Just one criticism Adrian. The cats look morose, they really need some new batteries. Otherwise a really informative look at the way you work. Thanks

Haroun Haroun

Noice. I just upgraded my Scarlett 2.i.2 v2 to a UA Volt 276 that has an onboard preamp and compressor. Very excited! Been using Reaper as my DAW, really, really, really good 'shareware' DAW (well small fee for 'quality' software) and got a whole swag of Waves plugins (something that emulates the Abbey Road mixing desk, curious to know how 'authentic' it is!) from 'the Russians'....!

Ignatz Maus

Hi Adrian, Edward from Fountain Hills (just NE of Phoenix, Arizona, USA) The thing that keeps me coming back is your generosity of spirt, your enthusiasm for the (rock) music of the last 75 years, and your eagerness to help others navigate their way to making satisfying noises with their guitars. It's odd, this video does a couple of unexpected things. First, it makes you seem like a man inside a capsule floating though space sending messages back home (shades of Maj. Tom). Second, it holds a mirror up to the rest of us. This is you, in your room but were are we? We are there somewhere in that room, We listen, we learn, we participate. But there is just that (rapidly aging) computer behind you. We are there in that room somewhere. Interesting. As to what would be valuable to see going forward. I often think of a short lived video series called Guitar Moves with Matt Sweeney. He would sit with a different guitar player and basically ask, "if you were to try and teach some kid how to play guitar, what would you tell them?" Basically, my suggestion is that you might consider occasionally bringing other musicians you know into the space capsule and ask them something like that? Anyway, I am grateful for such an awesome teacher.

Mike Elmendorf

Dig the tour, dude. My first question that came to mind was; “what’s in the mug? Tea, coffee, absinthe? How often does the dude spill it on the gear?” Speaking of: Don’t mean to brag or boast but on September 3, 1982 in Devore California Gang of Four and Talking Heads were bookends; Gang of Four opened the US Festival Talking Heads closed(i think i mention that i was there here ever-time I write here ha). One of my favorite periods for music. Ive seen most live you mentioned. How’s the songwriting going? I mentioned The Growlers. They are on a break, but, Brooks Nelson, lead singer -force behind The Growlers will be on his first UK solo tour. He will be playing ye ole London at The Garage June 10. Im about to practice in a minute a triad exercise using your diagrams. Currently im using a regime of both minor and major triads; minor triads one day, major triads the next. One day I might use string-sets 4-5-6 with minor triads up and down the fretboard going through all 12 notes, next day I would use string-set 1-2-3 with major triads. The next day minor triads would be 3-4-5. The next day major using the next. It takes me about an hour per string-set. I might break into some improv lengthening the exercise. Im still struggling with some chords in the 4-5-6 and 3-4-5 realm. However muscle-memory is starting to kick in after starting on this almost daily since 12-19-22. Thanks again for the tour. Coffee, tea, absinthe? Cheers

Ian West

Thanks for responding to my request regarding Q and A. I have a couple for you.

Ian West

1. You publish a new song or guitar tutorial nearly every week. How much of the stuff you work out, learn and present can you remember by heart? The reason why I ask this is that if I don't practise a song regularly enough, I'll eventually forget, although I can eventually find the notes if I listen hard enough.

Ian West

2. On average, how much time is spent preparing a 20-minute video?

Ian West

3. Final question: What are your other interests outside music and how do you manage balancing your work with family life?

Fishrock

Thanks for the tour, very appreciated. Totally in line with your content. DIY It's reassuring to find others that are on the same wavelength with much to teach us.

JScott

Thanks for the tour Adrian. You get a lot of utility out of a smallish space. I'm impressed.

Marty Vanzant

Thank you Adrian for your Studio tour video. You seemed more relaxed - like talking to a friend. My wife even commented that it was like being in the room with you and having a nice conversation. Great thing this Patreon group! Also, loved the ToneHenge comment! The courses you mention sound very interesting - great idea about the Song approach. When I took a few lessons years ago, after the first few basics, that was what my 15 year old self was wanting to learn - how to play this song or that song. Keep up the great work! A suggestion for future Patreon video - comparison of your great Jazzmaster to the 'new' Fender Vintage II Jazzmaster (if available in London). Thanks again!

Stephen Oldmeadow

The song based course sounds really interesting. Are you able to say what songs you'll be including by Gang of Four and The Cure?

Stephen Braddy

Yes, the Tonehenge comment, and the tour overall was excellent.

Brian Scott

Very cool, thanks Adrian!

Matthew Bockbrader

I quite enjoyed the studio tour. I would love the opportunity to submit questions for a future Q & A video. Look forward to the new courses. The structure of the last one was of great benefit. I wish I could send it back in time to my younger self!

anyonecanplayguitar

Cheers Kris. Yes, there'll be more info on the PP course once it's ready to launch - hopefully in a few months time.

anyonecanplayguitar

haha yes, Shakin All Over has long been a favourite of mine. Love Tom Petty, but don't really know that live album - must check it out!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks David. Really pleased to hear you've been finding the first solos course helpful.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, we share quite similar tastes in music so he's a great person to collaborate with.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, Oblique Strategies are a studio essential! They're a fun talking point if you're working with others. I don't use them loads, but they have been a useful way of getting out of a rut or changing the direction of a session.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Michael. Yes, a proper detailed rundown of my guitars would be fun - I might try that in a future video.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I can certainly do some more in depth videos on my recording and mixing set up inside the computer if people are interested. Will try and do that in a future video.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks. Yes, I'm sure I missed quite a few things. I wasn't sure how much the synth stuff would be of interest to an audience of guitar players, but very happy to discuss that more in a future video. There's a Korg MS20 mini, and also a Minologue. And I've got a trio of Moog semi-modular stuff - Mother 32, DFAM and Subharmonicon. Fun to nerd out with that stuff when I'm not playing guitar.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Brent. Yes, definitely want to do more videos like this in the future and will try and include both theory and gear.

anyonecanplayguitar

Haha, yes hope you're going to like it! It's been quite an epic process putting it together - tons of great songs and artists are included.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Mik - glad you liked the video. Will keep everyone here posted on the release date for the PP course - hope it will be n a few months time.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Kyle. Yes, great idea. Love music biographies and music books in general so might well do this in a future video.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I might well do a proper video on home recording. My set up here is now quite elaborate and would be totally over the top if you just want to get started with home recording. Agree with Jeff that Garage Band is a good place to start. Then I'd suggest a decent entry level audio interface, a little midi keyboard, and maybe a Shure SM57 mic. You could get a lot done with that kind of set up.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I've got tons of gear these days, a lot of it not strictly speaking necessary. Mostly it's just giving me options if I'm recording my own music or collaborating with others. I'd like to think I could still get good results with minimal gear. In fact that might be a good video to make.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Peter. Yes, a video on putting together your own backing tracks could be really interesting. Will make a note of that idea and try and do it for a future video.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, hope you're going to enjoy the PP course. It's been an epic process putting it together and it's meant I've been able to look at many of my favourite players in even more depth than I'm able to on my YouTube channel.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Steven. Yes a video on how to replicate guitar sounds could be really interesting, thanks for the suggestion. Yes, Jamie Humphries is an awesome player and guitar educator. He's going to be doing some courses too, covering more the rock and metal side of things.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Ralph. Yes, the set up has grown of the years. Initially it was just a laptop and a camcorder, but I've trying to improve the quality of the content both from an audio and video point of view. But a lot of the gear doesn't get used much for YouTube - it's more for recording my music or collaborating and doing sessions with other people.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks! Yes, I love YouTube and doing the videos but sometimes it good to take a little break from the content creation treadmill!

anyonecanplayguitar

haha yes, I haven't been giving them enough love lately! Will replace the batteries this week.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I love the UA stuff, and the Volt 276 looks great. Sure that'll be a step up from the Scarlett. Never used Reaper but have heard very good things about it. And I think the Waves stuff sounds great and use it all the time.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Edward! Yes, there's always a bit of a space capsule feeling when you're in a recording studio - the dead acoustics, the flashing lights, the intense concentration! Yes, definitely think collaborating with others to bringing in the occasional guest would be a really interesting way to develop what I'm doing. I remember the Guitar Moves episode with Keith Richards which was amazing! Wonder if he'd be up for visiting my studio?!

anyonecanplayguitar

Cheers Mike! I'm just too young to have been able to see a lot of the post-punk era bands first time round. So I'm slightly envious you were there at the peak of that amazing period f music. Might try and check out the Growlers when they come to the UK! And glad you're finding the triads stuff helpful - seems like you've got a great practice routine going there. As for the mug - rather boringly - it's just a cup of tea. I don't think anyone needs to see me making videos on absinthe!

anyonecanplayguitar

Great questions Ian. Yes, seems to be some appetite for a Q and A. So I'll make it happen. I've noted your questions and try and include them.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Marty! Yes, it feels like I'm amongst friends here on the Patreon page, so it's definitely a more laid back style of video. Like the idea of a Jazzmaster comparison video - will see what I can do!

anyonecanplayguitar

I will publish a full list soon. Can't remember off the top of my head. It's a combination of the obvious classics and 2 or 3 deeper cuts as well for each band.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Steven - yes the Tonehenge thing isn't unfortunately an original gag, but seems apt for the wall of amps I have going on here.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Matthew! There seems to be appetite here for a Q and A, so I'll make it happen. The week before I do it, I'll post on here and get everyone to submit questions.

Ian West

thanks a lot. Look forward to your answers.

Charles Cluck

I saw the announcement about Patreon's new exclusive video platform and instantly wondered if you'd be an early adopter - and here you are, already ! I'd be interested to see a "fly-on-the-wall" video of you building up a backing track for a regular lesson. Just you going about your business with a bit of commentary and explanation, some screen views and such. And, BTW, I'm looking forward to that 2'd-level soloing course - I've benefited greatly from #1. But, what I really want is an intermediate level course that focuses on the country genre. I know its not your primary thing, but damn, you do it so well ..

Jurgos

Hi Adrian, thanks for the Studio tour. I

Jurgos

I don‘t know very much about gear and Recording stuff, so ist was an interesting introduction. I Mike what you‘re doing and I‘m looking forward to the intermediate solo Course. All the best for you and those around you.

Jurgos

Should read „I like“, Not mike.

Covey Herd

Hi Adrian, thank you for the studio tour! I didn't know that you could also play keyboards. You mentioned lessons for the Cure. I learned a simplified version of their song "Jumping Someone Else's Train" - the tab book was actually accurate for the fills section. My Sister and I used to re-wind the Staring at the Sea VHS tape as soon as it was over.

J. Cruelty Catalog

Very excited to hear about the upcoming post-punk guitar course!

El Scotto

Really fascinating! Thanks Adrian. One question though, where's the door?

Michael J. Ricciuti

That was fun--really enjoyed seeing the "back of house" space, which looks awfully similar to my own studio/workshop/darkroom/office space. Houses in Boston, like London, are very compact.

Ron Fornelli

that's what I was wondering..

Ron Fornelli

interesting.. I like this sort of sneak peek to the other side sort of thing.. I really enjoy your work Adrian, Thanks a bunch..

Patrick Delombre

Adrian, super excited about your two new courses. For sure will buy both of them, the solo training was really, really good! I do have a wish for a dream course from you, how to write and create your own punk, alternative, post-punk, etc. music. Huge gap in the market for this type of courses. I think you would be the absolute best teach for this. You have the taste, skills, and you make your own records. Please consider :-).

Eric Sherman Baker

Wow that'ls more than I thought you had! Hope you got good security. Been debating on the Grandmother or getting a Korg Minilogue for my first analogue synth. Would love a Prodigy but even that is out of my price range. Definitely interested in the post punk course. That's some of my favrorite music. Looks like you are setup ip to do everything but drums as far ask making a record. Have you tried producing other people or just your own projects? Aso what DAW do you use, Logic X?

jb nb

Hi Adrian. The Studio-Tour video was really interesting. Another idea for an upcoming video would be to go through how you get your backing tracks together. The tracks are excellent quality, and something I find difficult to do well. Thanks!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, good idea. A few people have expressed interest in something like this. Will try and do it soon.

Tombot

Hi Adrian just listened to your Zodiac Toys album on Spotify. Brilliant! Absolutely loved it.

anyonecanplayguitar

Haha yes I've now got quite a collection stuff. Costs a lot in insurance, but it has to be done! I'd recommend the Grandmother - a modern classic and so much fun to use. I do actually have a small drum kit which I occasionally use, but it's usually a little to time consuming to set up and record then breakdown again. Yes, I do bits and pieces of production work from time to time. The occasional paid session. And sometimes producing stuff for friends or acquaintances. DAW-wise I use Pro Tools. A bit of a pain in the ass at times, but it's what I've used for years, and what I'm most comfortable with.

Dennis

Hi Adrian, any update on the post punk course?

Supersonic

Tell us more about the Telecaster, please....

anyonecanplayguitar

There's actually an old video on YouTube where I talk about the guitar. If you do a search on my YT channel homepage you should find it!

Blaine Whelan

Very interesting. I thought you were in a cupboard under the stairs

Douglas Edge

Another vote for a backing tracks creation vid. I was pretty floored hearing yours... excellent detail and not something that is easy to do at the level you do.

Wayne Rayfield

Adrian, I really like your sound with the Princeton... which Princeton is this? I am looking for a home recording studio/ small venue amp for surfy sounds. Please advise...

Mitch

Thanks for the tour. I am currently setting up a small recording/production `studio' - my retirement project. Might have to go back to work to buy some more gear :)

william holmes

Adrian, just stumbled across this (great stuff). I’m wondering if you published the post-punk course you mentioned? I didn’t see it on your website. Cheers!
