Hi everyone. For some reason I've never properly looked at a Tom Waits song, or any Marc Ribot on my channel. So let's fix that this week.

I'm looking at the track Jockey Full of Bourbon from one of my favourite Wait's albums, Rain Dogs. This one features some lovely Ribot guitar work which I'm going to be breaking down in a bit of detail.

Beyond learning the song and a few of Ribot's licks, I think this is also a really fun track just to improvise over (and an excellent way of practicing your triads, arpeggios and scales). My tab below is a - more or less - note for note transcription of the entire track. During the first couple of verses it's hard to hear exactly what Ribot is doing so I've done a little bit of guesswork in a couple of places.

The arrangement on the backing track is exactly the same as the studio recording and the tab although in the video I did a slightly abbreviated version where I played the intro, verse, chorus and went straight to the solo. There's a 2 bar shaker count-in.

Hope you enjoy playing along.

I'm not going to be around next week. It's half-term holiday here in the UK and I should really get out of the studio and spend a bit of time with the family. Next video will be at the start of October.

Speak soon,

Adrian

This is one of my favorite songs of all time! Ribot has been a big inspiration to me over the years, and I'm truly excited for this lesson :) thank you very much sir!

Another wonderful selection! Between learning this, and having more fun with Whip It! I am good to go for the quiet week... see you at the beginning of 'October' (in the states, we are going to be on November time!).

Ignatz Maus

Oh, just noticed. Will you be posting the tabs before you head out?

Ignatz Maus

See them now. Thank you!

Chris Grimes

Thanks -- have been making a hash of this great song for years. Love Ribot's work.

Hans

Great choice. Thank you.

Andrew Hibben

Always a pleasure to see what you have decided to spoil us with every Friday, in Adrian we trust...and I live in hope that another Tom Verlaine lesson is just around the corner - you know it makes sense!

Peter Healy

Wow Adrian, talk about timely. I have been thinking about exploring some of my favourite Guitar parts and you recorded this. It was not one I had in mind, but it is exactly what I was looking for. Just another bit of history I saw Tom Waits perform on 5th April 1979 at Mayne Hall Queensland University. It was one of the most memorable Gigs I have ever seen. I was really lucky to have been around during this time to see so many Artists and Bands that were part of this big shift in Music. Thanks again Pete

"November" is arriving in ten days...can you post the Theremin tabs for the Waits song?

Glenn Sherwood

My Google homepage is pushing a lot of different articles and magazines, I'm curious is what is and what isn't AI generated... much of it seems interesting but it's hard to enjoy and get into something if it's not truly authentic.... I can deal with rockstars changing stories and fading memories and made up events, even the perpetuation of a lie is sometimes enchanting to hear if told well by a legend, however I feel uncomfortable with the machine getting involved with my culture ....Can anyone recommend some music magazines that aren't necessarily mainstream, but can be... Thanks everyone in advance for your input.

Glenn Sherwood

Adrian thank you for helping me climb out of the box of listening only to certain music, and helping me take a new look at familiar sounds.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, should be right there under the post. Are they not showing up for you?

Aaron Deas

This is amazing. I love this Album and this song, so I am thrilled! You rule Adrian!

John Fraser

Fabulous choice - thanks Adrian!

Yes, interesting comment Glenn. We're certainly living through strange and confusing times. Be interested to hear what other people think about this, or if anyone has any recommendations.

Allan Dahlquist

Very nice! You've given us a lesson on the fundamentals of the song, a nudge into exploring the nuances of the song and insight to using it as a springboard to into improvisation. The effort you put into your 18 min. video really is appreciated. Thanks.

Christopher Houlihan

Terrific. This is an old favorite but it never occurred to me to learn it. Thank you.

Would love another Ribot, particularly something from Cubanos Postizos or Dead Combo

Anthony Naples

I’ll second that. I’d love something from that Cubanos album
