Hi everyone. This week, a bit of Sabbath. I had intended this to be my Halloween special, but since I was away last week I missed that opportunity. But rather than leaving it until next year, I thought I'd make the video anyway, Halloween or not.

This one's a great workout for power chords and picking hand accuracy. And the solo contains some essential, quite easy to play pentatonic phrases.

I've tabbed everything out below. (For those heroic individuals who actually read the standard notation I should point out that in my tab I've written it out as though the track were in standard tuning, just to make things easier to read.) At the end of the main tab I've written out the 5 licks I talk about towards the end of the video that I've extracted from the actual solo.

In my video I'm tuned down a step and a half, though you can of course play it in standard tuning too if you like.

Hope you have fun with it.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Several years ago I randomly went to the Guitar Center Hollywood. In the store there were heavy metal tribute art displays representing varies metal bands. I think it was a traveling showcase going to various Guitar Center stores across the US. I think featured were bands like Korn, Slipknot, Black Sabbath current and older metal bands. The store was pretty empty being it was probably a weekday. I checked out all the art end ended near the exit entrance (I think it was a very large black coffin, I forget the band represented) when I felt someone behind me and very near. I looked over my shoulder to see fckn Tony Iommi. He was wearing old worn black sneakers. His glasses were not the usual tinted, but regular prescription. He was paused at the display as I was. After we had our fill I began walking to a counter, Mr Iommi went to seemingly see the crazy custom $$$$ guitars they have. Walking to the near counter in a bit of a rush, towards the guy behind the counter —-pointing over my shoulder before I could open my mouth with the obvious elated question —him without saying anything with an exaggerated nod of the head —as if saying “YES, IT IS HIM!!”

My 24 year old daughter really likes metal and although I've spent quite a bit of time learning Adrian's wonderful arrangement of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", I think she will enjoy this more. This Christmas when I subject her to my guitar playing, hopefully she will be surprised and a bit relieved, at least about the song selection! Thank you Adrian:))

Is anyone recommending a Sabbra Cadabra pedal for this tone, or maybe Adrian is using something else? Nice sound here! Thank you.

Excellent lesson! Great song! Thanks Adrian!

Fabio Punk

Great! Easy enough piece of metal for me, thanks Adrian

I think a Carl Martin Plexitone or Snouse Black Box 2 will get you the metal goodness in a pedal, check them out. I have both and they nail Marshall distortion. The Snouse is a bit more flexible it can do both transparent tasteful drive and the more over the top as well. Plexitone more affordable and pretty much starts with meaty crunch. It also cleans up well with your guitar volume knob just like a tube amp.

Thanks Adrian, you always seem to please whichever genre you share! Have you considered Highway Star by Deep Purple? That’s a great work out too with a euphoric solo as I’m sure you know. 😊

Haha that's great. Yes, maybe you can do a little Christmas guitar recital, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas followed by some Sabbath!

Heard good things about that pedal and I'm very tempted to buy one! But for this video I'm using my Studio Vintage Marshall with a Analogman Bean Boost treble booster in front. Gets a similar sound, I think.

Thanks Michael. I've not personally tried either but they sound ideal for these kind of classic metal tones!

Thanks Gary! Yes, I'm really enjoy occasionally doing some classic rock and metal stuff. Highway Star's another classic. I'll definitely consider it. Not sure my technique is quite a match for some of that Richie Blackmore stuff these days though!

Thanks for spreading the gospel of the Sabbath, Adrian. Maybe Sabbath Bloody Sabbath would be a fun one, too
