Hi everyone!

This week I'm talking about one of my favourite ways of playing pentatonic scales: horizontal or diagonal shapes. These patterns are very easy to get under the fingers, and making music with them seems to come very naturally. It's definitely a good option to use instead of - or in addition to - the more common CAGED shapes.

In the video I give you  couple of basic scale patterns and then focus on how to use those patterns in a musical way. There are plenty of lick examples, and I'd also strongly encourage you to come up with some ideas of your own.

Everything I discuss in the lesson is tabbed out below, including the brief solo I play at the start of the video. And my backing track will be in the next post.

Hope you enjoy it. Speak next week,

Adrian

Thanks Adrian ur a star I love your lessons I will update my patreon when I get a few more quid and appreciate all the information u give us if you take your time and study the lessons they sure do help especially last week’s lesson on rhythm with the acoustic I really need to tighten that up as I’m playing a lot of fingerstyle. And it’s easy to forget the strumming that we all still need cheers my man from Ireland 🇮🇪.. Brian

Adrian, echoing what has been said above. I've always wanted to learn how to play guitar. What did that mean to me? Playing some of my favorite songs just for me. But what I am getting here is so much more. I am learning some music theory. Which is a real kick. Now I am aiming for being able to play confidently. Maybe one day letting other people listen.

Thanks Adrian - wonderfully helpful lesson, and yes please to a follow-up for the ‘minor’ companion! Cheers

This is a really useful, different way of working on pentatonic scales. A similar video on minor pentatonic would be great.

Colin Sykes

Excellent - and yes minor pentatonic too, e.g.including A minor
