Great reaction to an episode I dislike. I don't dislike it for its story, I think it's very well done and the performances are great. But it's just that I hate snakes, so this is an episode I always skip on rewatches. I've seen it maybe three times total since its original airing. The main point of the episode seems to be basically what Mulder says at the end: "People think the devil has horns and a tail. They're not used to looking for some kindly man who tells you what you want to hear." In this case, the antagonist, the "snake-man" who was responsible for everything, was very kind, appeared normal, educated, stable, and told people more or less what they wanted to hear. The other guy, a fundamentalist apparently uneducated religious nutcase and "snake-handler", was the wrong person to look for. Does it make the fundamentalist a good guy? Not necessarily, but he's definitely not the antagonist here. And since he participated in snake-handling, it was also the perfect way for the real bad guy to frame everything on him. This episode, although not written by the same writers, has two striking similarities to season four "Sanguinarium" (gory hospital episode). In that one, a huge portion of the episode points to a nurse as being the antagonist and a surgeon as being the victim, and later on it turns out to be the other way around. More importantly, the ending of the episode is essentially the same. In "Sanguinarium", the antagonist has a new face (literally) and finds a new job at a different hospital, and the antagonist in "Signs and Wonders" assumes a new identity and starts working at a different place in another church. Like I said, I think it's a well-done episode and really with a cool twist, but the subject matter is just not my kind of thing. I enjoyed your reactions as usual. It is pretty disgusting though.

I like to think Mother Cain would approve :P

Thanks for another great reaction. I found the volume on this episode difficult: your voices and discussion were fine, but the dialogue in the episode was really, really quiet in comparison and very difficult to hear.

This is one of the rare episodes this season that I feel could be straight from season one.

I think the thesis of this episode is that you can't be wishy washy when it comes to evil. There is no way to be "tolerant" of the Devil. The trouble is recognizing it.
