I am glad you enjoyed this episode, I have a love hate relationship with this episode, of course I love everytime we get to see Garth and that dean and Garth dance is a highlight of my life, if you have told me back in season 1 that I will see dean tap dancing I would've laughed in your face but here we are! I love it, at the beginning of this episode after Garth hugs dean he compliments him by saying that he smells good but dean can't take a compliment from another guy so he deflects and acts annoyed but at the end of the episode not only does dean initiate the hug but he also return the compliment and tells Garth that he doesn't smell too bad himself 🥺, he came so far and the fact that towards the end of the episode he sees Garth dance with his partner and he says that he always thought he could be a good dancer if he wanted implies that he thinks he can be a good dancing partner that maybe he still longs to dance with someone to express himself freely away of societal expectations and judgments hence the whole dance sequence and dancing with the lamp, I can understand the writers adding scenes just to show case Jensen's talents like him singing but this was different, Jensen didn't have a dancing background that they wanted to showcase, in fact the writers just dropped this on Jensen and he learned tap dancing in an afternoon coz he's just a superhuman, so dabb really wanted this for dean, to show that dean actually wants to sing and dance and despite him calling Sam the theater kid as an insult on multiple occasions that out of the two of them maybe he's more of the theater kid and maybe lots of the diggs he throws at Sam are digs at himself for enjoying things that he may deem as "less manly" or whatever, something to think about. I don't like the implication that Sam and dean were only great hunters because of plot armor because they're the hero of Chuck's story, that's too meta for me, you mean to tell me Sam and dean actually have no skills? So all of John's training taught them nothing nah I don't buy it, this is not Sam and dean without Chuck's interference, this Sam and dean with god purposely cursing them Most importantly why the fuck did they blow up that monster fight club killing everyone???? The monsters weren't killing humans they're just fighting for money!! How is this okay???

Helen Wood

This is not normal, this is a curse of bad luck. Chuck wants them to think this is how they are without his support, but he has not been on their side for a while now.

Helen Wood

Neither Jensen nor DJ had tap danced before. They both learnt that in a matter of hours. Jensen's surprised delight when he threw that cane perfectly was real.

It does work for me too. I didn't care much about the fight club, but the rest of it and even the campness of some bits I really like. Also I always enjoy seeing Garth.

The implication with things like the lock picking, is that they never had the skill to pick a lock. They’d always just fluked it and assumed they could cos chuck didn’t want it to interrupt the story. As normal people without plot armor, they’re just not as good at a lot of stuff or don’t actually know how to do some things. But the understated horror of this episode is that they really killed a bunch of non humans that might not have been bad, like Garth’s brother in law who was there just cos they needed some money, just because they assumed having that many non humans in one place would mean some of them must be killing humans. That’s like walking in to a bar, assuming someone must be a drug dealer and bombing the place.

This episode is okay for me. Not great. I do enjoy Dean tap dancing, and of course he looks great doing it. I do enjoy the next episode more, though.

Except I don’t think they ever imply that it’s extra bad luck and I don’t think the writers ever said that. As meta as this show is, it is a show and only is what the writers wrote it as. It’s just like the future that Zachariah showed that people thought was fake and kept thinking was fake for years, this show doesn’t actually exist, if the show tells us it’s real and never tells or implies that Zachariah made it up, then it was real. Maybe I’m wrong and they say it is extra bad luck next episode tho.

Glad you liked the episode, Shelley; however, the plot didn't quite work for me on my first watch (more on this in the reply) ... other than the plot I do like the humor and the laugh-out-loud antics of Sam, Dean, Garth and his family. Some interesting trivia from Superwiki, - Jensen did "three hours of lessons, of tap dancing lessons and ended up doing this whole maybe a minute and a half, minute 45 second tap dance routine on the show.” He said "“I think I must’ve done 18 different takes,” Ackles said. “I was like, ‘No, I missed that one step. Let’s do it again.’ I’m not usually like that. I pride myself on knocking it out in one take for most things. This, I was like, it was out of my comfort zone and I wasn’t going to settle. I kept dancing, kept dancing, kept dancing. I must’ve burned 10,000 calories that afternoon.” - According to choreographer Gordon Hart, Jensen and DJ Qualls learned their tap dance routine in an hour. He also said: "In watching the episode in its entirety, vulnerability is a theme. Dancing can make people feel very vulnerable. This was represented by Dean being vulnerable to Garth. In this dream, Garth invites him into this uncomfortable world. Dances with him until Dean is ready to take it on his own. Again ... my personal thoughts. Vulnerability, trust, friendship. Having friends/family help and support you through uncomfortable times until you are back on your feet and can go it on your own. Things I thought about." - It's revealed that Charlie Bradbury created a limitless credit card for the Winchesters to pay for their purchases so that they would no longer have to hustle for money. This must've been the original Charlie, as Dean says he has had the card for five years. - Garth had described in 8.06 Southern Comfort that he went to college and dental school until he killed the Tooth Fairy and that was what lead him into hunting. He tells Dean that when he retired from hunting, he went back to school and finished his degree. - Garth: Well, what's that make me? A supporting character? Special guest star? DJ Qualls was in fact a "Special Guest Star" for this episode. This is presumably supposed to be a meta reference to Garth's role as both a supporting character and a special guest star.

We see the show very differently. To me, if is made very clear that it is extra bad luck.

In my head canon Chuck is messing with their heads by blocking their abilities. He's trying to make them believe it's all him and his story. I don't believe that. I will never believe that because Sam and Dean have proven too many times in small ways Chuck doesn't have control over everything

That's my takeaway too about the fight club plot. It was supposed to be all monsters, so if they wanted to fight or kill each other let them as long as no human was sacrificed in the process, since there is no justice system that can bring them to trial anyway, not like the human counterpart. I don't get the plot here ... For what purpose is the investigation into Garth's brother-in-law's case? Are there humans being held there like in the Breakdown episode with Donna's niece that was live-streamed on the dark web that was mentioned in the episode? ... they didn't find any humans held there, so ... Why the heck did they C4-ed the whole lives in that warehouse? ... to save Sam and Dean they have to kill the whole warehouse of monsters? Sam and Dean had already been saved, Garth, you saved them and you all are outside of the warehouse already ...

ETA: One thing I find interesting after reading the script is that at the end scene when Sam and Dean were holding the baby twins Sam and Castiel, ... in the aired episode what Dean said about baby Castiel was: DEAN : This Cass keeps looking at me weird. SAM : So kind of like the real Cass. ... what was in the actual script was: DEAN : He won't stop staring at me. SAM : So just like the real Cass. ... LOL ... so Cas frequently staring at Dean got a shout-out in this episode ... via link: Production Blue Draft (10/23/19) page 47/51 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KPBowSb4LTN8aM0zUGmqem9X2uPEZpod/view

My first take of this episode was as follows: Almost all of their life skills were taken away from the Winchesters in this episode. If the skills that the Winchesters' have can be taken away, does that mean that they don't actually earn that skill and in fact given by Chuck? The Winchesters were rendered incompetent in their actual world – and as a result, their past competence and heroism were re-coded to be not something real, but instead something that Chuck manipulated them into. It wasn’t their years of childhood training and hunting experience that made them the badass heroes we love – no, it was just Chuck handing them their successes on a silver platter. Making it easy for them. You mess with that from within the canon of the show, and what does that leave you? A tattered image of our heroes … So what happened was this type of takeaway left a very bad aftertaste in my mouth, so I had to revise it. ... and this was my revised takeaways after multiple rewatches: All the life skills that the Winchesters previously had, apparently mysteriously disappeared, because of Chuck’s petty attempt to manipulate them into believing that this is what they truly are without his divine cosmic help, and THAT was bullsh*t ... - If Dean had had ONE cavity, I could buy it was just bad luck. You just don’t develop 17 CAVITIES in the span of 24 hours. THAT IS NOT NORMAL. - If Baby had ONE time bad spark plugs, I could buy it was just a "normal" sort of problem that "normal people" face. However, Dean has been working on Baby his entire life, and Baby stalled multiple times in this episode. - Did they both forget how to pick a lock? When it something we’ve seen them do over and over and over again in this show? - Sam was shown as not even competent at all in the kitchen, even forgetting to use the padded glove mitts for hot pans, and tripping over his own feet? - Sam isn’t even capable of using the puppy eyes he’s used forever to work on people? That Sam was never a skilled interrogator? The sheer number of failures they experienced went so far beyond “normal” as to be cartoonish. Then it dawned on me that they weren’t “normal,” they were DOOMED TO FAIL, because Chuck was proving a point - that they were being specifically and DELIBERATELY held back from succeeding, at anything and everything. And THAT WAS THE POINT .... that they knew they have these specific skills, it just that no matter what, they just couldn't do anything right ... something was making them fail, and it was Chuck ... And since their life skills had been taken from them in an unfairly divine way, they now had to regain their hard-earned skills in an also similar way even if there might be a catch that they have to overcome or pay whatever price to get back their “lost luck” which will be in the next episode ...or they will definitely lost in their fight against Chuck ....

i love this episode. it's not a top 20 or 30 ep or anything but it's a rollicking good time. and there is so much meta that came out of this episode - like even on this rewatch i noticed one line that was huge foreshadowing that i had missed before. this episode has layers, jensen and jared being comedic as hell, GARTH!, baby wolves, dean and garth bonding, dean looking fondly/longingly at garth and his normal-ish life, brother banter, baby having car trouble (FINALLY), and "this cas is looking at me weird" 😂 i love a good time episode and i think we needed this one and the next one before plunging back into the meat of the season. great react as always!

YazH

I adore Dean's tap dancing! And the way the brothers held Garth's twins was so cute. .. but otherwise I have to say I am not a huge fan of this episode. I had the same comments you had: The brothers' series of unfortunate events felt more like Chuck being super petty/rabbit's foot level of crap, not the Winchesters being 'normal' ... plus, to me the episode seemed too self-aware - more like watching Jared and Jensen being silly, rather than Sam and Dean being in silly situations. But, your reaction (as always) was great!

MidnightSilver

I don’t buy the ‘normal’ thing at all either. It’s definitely a curse and not just normal, but the show writers don’t hint that it really is a curse. We just have to assume that from things not adding up. And that’s where the show meta starts to get messy because are we really reading into the sub layers the messages that they want us to read or are we just making shit up to fix poor writing 🤷🏻‍♂️. And another thing that really ruffled my feathers in this episode is the mocking way the ‘Dean’s theme’ music played while Dean gave his hero’s speech to Sam. That music has brought us some of the most emotional scenes ever in Spn, and it feels disrespectful to all the great moments to use that refrain and over-the-top speech to mock the whole premise of heroism, sacrifice and determination in the show. If this is meta commentary by the writers then I’m not sure what they were trying to say. Maybe it’s just chuck mocking the core pillars of the show. but since Chuck is either a metaphor for the writers or for the fans…. Then…. What exactly are they trying to say? ?? This episode really doesn’t work for me, I wish the had found a different way to do this plot and keep the comedy episode.

Abigail

I always interpreted the luck thing as them being normal all at once. They are getting a lifetime of normal in one episode and they were used to taking their luck for granted. If they kept going this way I think they would adjust and just be "normal", but it feels like a curse now because they are not used to it.

AdoptDontShopPets

Yes, I believe we have to make shit up to fix stupid writing. It’s always been that way to fix complicated plot holes, but now it seems more like lazy, uninspired writing, or simply the cracks forming with Dabb twisting things to create his narrative (which some do call genius, so eye of the beholder, I guess).

Sare

AdoptDontShopPets

^^THIS! THIS! THIS!^^ I agree with everything you said. Thank you.

Amye Sabin

I second that! Lazy lazy writing. And that tap dancing scene is very cringe, to me. Whille I loved that Garth has a cute family and got to be the hero, I hated that he didn't name one of his sons after Dean. He & Dean have always been closer than he & Sam. That hurts my heart for Dean.

Klaara

I think this is one of the most misinterpreted episodes of this show which is a shame because the episode is great. It’s fun and it has some interesting commentary and subtext going on (in the tap dancing scene for example). I think they wanted to do a fun meta episode for the last season and the idea for this episode was going to be that Sam and Dean are dealing with “normal” people’s problems they haven’t had to worry about because they are the main characters of the story. And why are they dealing with these problems? Well because of Chuck, the writer of the story, who is messing with them. It’s fine if some people don’t like how the episode was executed or just don’t like the episode as a whole. But at least to me it’s pretty obvious that the intention of the episode is not that Sam and Dean have some sort of special powers that Chuck took away. This is one of those times when you shouldn’t take everything that the characters say as the ultimate truth but instead believe the story that’s being told. In this case Garth wasn’t technically wrong by saying that Sam and Dean are just dealing with normal people’s problems but they aren’t completely normal either because who has that many cavities all of a sudden, who has that much trouble with their car, etc. They are not their normal selves, they are cursed by Chuck to experience normality in an extreme way.

AdoptDontShopPets

Yes, it is the execution of the concept that I don’t enjoy. I get offended on Sam and Dean’s behalf. They are fictional characters so I know I shouldn’t, but here we are.

Klaara

Yeah that's understandable. Not everyone likes the episode for that reason.

rose mnor

@Klaara - I agree with you ... On my first live-watch, I felt so off-kilter, lol. Not helping also was fans' unfavorable reviews that I frequently visited were in the same boat. Then someone else who liked it said to me to look at it from a different angle and disregard what the characters said, and "make it make sense TO YOU - everything that didn't make sense just turn it around and make it logical in your head by finding the anomaly - the why - and connect the dots." And that was what I did ...

YazH

100% on the blowing up the monsters!

CrystalDeth

DJ said at a Liverpool con last year that he is basically living long enough to see Jensen fail at SOMETHING! He brought up this tap dance - cracked me up because I adore Dean/Jensen but I really didn't see all these layers of talent until the last couple of years.
