Love seeing the Jack and Cas team up. Would have watched so many more of these

rose mnor

Great reaction, Shelley, I liked this episode too ... Some trivia from Superwiki: - This was the first episode of a television show that Matt Cohen (Young John Winchester) directed. - Steve Bacic, who played Pastor Joe, previously played Dr. Sexy in 5.08 Changing Channels. - Nicole Muñoz, who played Sylvia, previously played Nora -- the little girl whose parents get killed in 2.02 Everybody Loves a Clown. If I remember correctly, this episode was promoted as a Cas-centric episode, and we fans were so excited over it. Also before S15 started, Misha said, again I wasn't sure of the source of it, that he requested an episode to direct and was given one, but eventually, he gave up his slot to Matt Cohen, which later became this one. At 32.03 mark, Shelley: So what was Conner's [sin] ... pride? The answer is at the 09.04 mark, Cop: But, there was a message. The kid, Connor, someone wrote the word "liar" on his body. Sort of carved it in. and, also ... SYLVIA: ... Connor and I, we... dated, years ago... sort of. More like we watched a lot of old movies together. Since the killer was Sylvia and Conner turned out to be gay as per what the Pastor revealed to Cas, as Sylvia considered them to be dating in the past, imo, it can be extrapolated that Conner was killed because of that reveal, hence the lying part. So this episode we got some plot movement on the Amara front ... The whole endeavor seemed icky as everything from here on going forward hinges on deals being made with some cosmic entities... to accomplish something icky ... via icky methods ... ... and Jack drops the twist that he has to die to kill Chuck and Amara. In a way, it was his own version of the Empty Deal. Both of these somehow are going to come into play - Jack’s deal and Cas’. They are mirrors of each other. Jack tells Cas his death is not Cas’ choice, but his own. It mirrors the same scene as when Cas made that deal with the Empty last season 14.08 Byzantium. Cas dropping some very subtle shade towards Chuck: 11.20: Chuck is very proud of his cat picture blog 15.15: Cas’s complaints about the Internet include “too many cat pictures” In a lot of fics, Cas is a cat person. But between "I'll interrogate the cat" and "there's too many cats on the internet," I wonder if we've got it all wrong and Cas is actually the opposite of a cat person, lol ... The “human half” of TFW, Sam+Dean, went off in search of a cosmic entity, while the “cosmic entity half” of TFW, Cas+Jack, worked on a human case that touched on the goodness of humanity corrupted by blind devotion to God or the concept of God, how warped it had become. How Castiel as a character has grown by leaps and bounds - as an Angel of the Lord so many years ago, a Warrior who followed Heaven’s Orders much like Sylvia believed she was doing ... Cas has become far more human than so many of the human “monsters.” Dean *jerking Cas' chain* hinted at Cas that he and Amara had a thing (why would you want to do that, Dean?) and Cas was confused because the last time Dean told him this, sorta, Cas was possessed by Lucifer so he was not aware of that convo ... Dean's feelings about Amara were not fondness, it was a dubious consent attraction that was canonically addressed as that, by Dean and Sam (i.e. about that non-con feeling) - in S11.13 Love Hurts. Sam: Dean. Do you honestly think you ever had a choice in the matter? She’s the sister of God, and for some reason she picked you and that sucks, but if you think I’m gonna blame you or judge you…I’m not. Dean: Standing here right now, every bone in my body wants to run her through. Send her back to that hole she crawled out of. But when I’m near her, I don’t know. Something happens and I can’t explain it, but to call it desire or love…it’s not that. ... so to me, it was not surprising that there was no love lost on Dean's side ... other than the return of Mary in which Amara herself wanted to gift Dean ... Dean didn't ask for that return. About the trial that Sam did in S8, I don't think it was the same as what Jack was doing here. Jack chose to do this with an informed decision and with his full knowledge intact, what he wanted out of choosing the mission is another matter by itself. Whereas Sam did not have full information or full awareness of its consequences, or of what each of the trials entailed - and that ultimately he would have to die to complete them. He went into it with the full intention of being alive and that was the main reason why he took over the whole thing from Dean, who, unlike Sam, was willing to die to undertake them. Only when Sam was almost finished did he get the feeling of not surviving and in the end he gave up, due to the pain, mentally and physically. So his choosing to die was through happenstance as repercussions of the trial, a requirement of the trials that he didn't even know until he was told by Dean at the very last stage. When and where he crossed that point of “I want to live” to “I don’t care if I die while doing this” was not, imo, shown clearly to the audience up until the last/critical stage. So if there is a parallel, then it should have been between Dean and Jack but Dean didn't go through it, so that parallel is incomplete, I guess ... And since this is Davey Perez's full episode and not a collaboration with other writers, I'm gonna go with what Atomic Monster - once you see it you can't unsee it - tells us, which is we can see part of what he's telling us of the point of the A plot, via hindsight - quoting Lillith's 15.03 Proverb 17:3 here " ... foreshadowing ..."

And now I'm gonna make a post about DeanCas, with some subtext, and some text, because I CAN ... Friendly reminder that Cas bought stuffed animals for both of his kids - Claire Grumpy Cat and Jack Marvelous Marvin, the Talking Teddy. The following below here is one of a lot of callbacks, and imo, they are all very deliberate and coded carefully into the dialogue so that even people who watch casually and pay attention will pick up on them:- “We…dated. Years ago, sort of. More like we watched a lot of old movies together.” Who made someone sit down and watch old movies together? Yeah, Dean and Cas, in 13.06, and they specifically reminded us of that episode by showing a pic of Cas in the hat. Why do I say this is a deliberate callback? Oh yeah, they were written by the same person, Davy Perez ... When Cas took that photo out of his wallet to summon the demon, you know, that photo of him in a cowboy hat that Dean forced him to wear on their post-Cas returning from the dead? That photo looks as if it’s one-half of a whole photo. Almost as if there was somebody else standing next to him, also in a cowboy hat, brimming with enthusiasm about Cas coming back and agreeing to re-enact Tombstone with him. This would mean that, - Dean taking a photo of Cas alone in a cowboy hat, and then Cas choosing to keep it for 2 years, and, - Cas keeping a photo of him and Dean together from a time when Dean was the happiest he’s ever seen him. - it means Cas literally had to cut himself out of that snapshot of Dean’s shining happy moment, in order to get the job done. It would be a lot flimsier drawing conclusions if both of these eps were not written by the same person ... also easier if they didn't literally use a photo of Cas in that cowboy hat ... honestly kinda wondering how you can't draw conclusions... because obviously they can use Cas's FBI photos instead ... but they didn't ... Cas and the pastor - subtext given that the actor is Dr. Sexy, who wears cowboy boots (Dean: ... coz it makes him sexy!) after just being reminded of Cas in a cowboy hat, lol. I don’t know if they deliberately sought out Dr. Sexy, or if this was just another instance of “we have a finite pool of actors in Vancouver to choose from, and he’s a good fit for the role and also available when we need him.” It’s fun to wonder, isn’t it? ... So what is this Dean and Cas just be….. throwing their son into doors ... LOL really ... did Cas throw Jack into the door ... ? Isn't he capable of opening it himself? It was a hilarious callback to Dean doing the same thing last episode. Haha, no ...Jack probably asked if Cas wanted him to break down the door, and Cas was like *eye roll* sure fine whatever. I do wonder if he had a problem opening it and Jack was like I’m gonna ram it, Cas, do I have your permission? ... and again Cas was like ‘fine ... you have my permission’ and Jack just put WAY too much force behind it. Jack wants to emulate his dads. He could have probably picked the lock if Sam had been the Dad On The Spot this time. But Dad On Scene was Cas, Nemesis of Doors (courtesy of Cas always smashing doors into smithereens, or not being able to open doors). So Jack smashed it. And at the end scene, DEAN WAS JUST LOITERING AROUND THE LIBRARY IN HIS FAVORITE DEAD GUY ROBE WAITING FOR CAS .... and Cas doesn't want to just disappear like he often does before without telling Dean his concerns about Jack before leaving ... sound the alarm people! ... we got more progress on mending the divorce arc front ... yee haw!!! … … and we can flashback to Misha posting on his community text a cute photo of him and Jensen, pointing out that that would be the last time Jensen was gonna wear the dead guy robe as they were shooting that bunker scene … “ It's hard to say goodbye to the solid, dependable performers on a close-knit set. Recently, I shot the last scene I'll ever shoot with Jensen Ackles' robe... so I guess you can say, "that's a wrap" on his wrap. “ Via link: https://media.community.com/i/4686487f-6bcd-4c18-b9af-1e6c91c74ab9/a89147a8-e160-42f3-b7ca-a08166c5a9e7.jpeg?h=1

Ah so many great points in these 2 posts - I can't think of anything to add!

Klaara

You mentioned some really good points! I especially love the callbacks to Tombstone. (I'm just thinking if the last paragraph in the first post is too much of a spoiler, you know...)

rose mnor

yeah amended ... thanks for reading ! ...

Vel

Hey rose - with all due respect, I am all for people enjoying their own head canons and finding their own meaning in the story, it's part of what makes this fandom special. I'm not a shipper myself, and I harbor no ill will towards ANY ship. The show was always gracious and much more generous than most when it came to ALL the ships. When they did throw the fandom a bone, IMO they were quite blatant with it as they want us to see the winks and nods. Another reason our show was amazing! However, you are claiming things in this episode were deliberately chosen to validate shipping head canons that I did not interpret the same way you did. So could you please provide proof of that confirmation by cast, crew or TPTB? For this episode? All I have ever seen or heard from their own words (about any episode) was the opposite or a very vague response/rhetorical question that amounted to an assumption of coincidence more than anything. And if that's not correct, it would be good to have that archived. Thank you in advance!

rose mnor

Yeah Vel, why don't you write whatever you like through your own lens in your own post and sigh however loud over there about how other people are watching the show wrong and yours is the only right way to look at it and the show wasn't meant to be seen that way, coz the ptb said so to you personally. I already multiple times said to you not to respond to any of my posts, thanks, please respect my wishes. Don't like what I write within the context of my very own opinion i.e. imo, just scroll through and exit, it's not that hard.

Susan Stork

Yeah, this is one of the blah episodes for me. Not a fan. I always skip it on a re-watch. But glad you enjoyed it. My god, I can't believe how close you are to the end. It's crazy.

Kit

YES THANK YOU someone mentioned the lack of consent between dean and amara and how dean had absolutely no feelings towards her when he wasn’t in the same room

Kit

IMO the scene between Dean and Amara is one of the most underrated Jensen performances because the emotion he conveys is so strong! I only have one issue with that scene: Amara telling Dean that his life wouldn’t have been better at all if Mary hadn’t died, which I think is very dismissive of Dean’s trauma and just plain not true. YES I do not think it would have been the idyllic life that Dean always imagined it to be, but I think it still would have been better if he never had to see his mother die at a young age and didn’t have to become a parent at the age of 4 and didn’t have an alcoholic neglectful father who was too busy seeking revenge for his dead wife to care for his sons (and that’s just the stuff that is fully canon about John’s parenting, don’t get me started on the implied stuff). I understand why amara would think that, she’s a cosmic entity who doesn’t understand humans all that well, but there’s no way Dean’s life would have been just as bad if Mary never died.

Klaara

What rose said. And just fyi Vel, media analysis doesn’t work like that. When you are analyzing the subtext of a story, you don’t need the author's confirmation of it. Storytellers shouldn’t be obligated to provide all the intentions of their story, that’s not how storytelling works. You can disagree with someone’s analysis but you can do that in a respectful way. I’ve also noticed that the argument that you have to have the writers, cast, etc. confirmation on subtext comes up a lot when people are analyzing the subtext between Dean & Cas. Everything else is fine to analyze but the gay subtext has to have an actual “proof” for some reason...

Matt Cohen actually directed this episode one thing he said about it that I love is that he asked Misha to soap it up with Jensen as in act it as a soap opera in that final scene with Jensen but Misha told him no the scene isn't asking for it and he just went back and sat in his director seat and shut up lmao. I do love dean in his dead man robe and cas's trenchcoat walking towards each other, just a cool visual for me. The pastor in this episode is Dr.sexy from changing channels hence he's known in the fandom as pastor sexy lol. I love this episode, I have been waiting for a cas and jack hunting trip for seasons now and we finally got it!! 🎉It was as wholesome as I imagined, first of all cas getting frozen in place when dean reminds him that he and amara used to have a thing is just chef's kiss, dean definitely doesn't have any love lost for Amara, I mean it was always obvious that their "bond" was one sided but damn dean lying to Amara's face saying "I would never hurt you" is so cold, even if he doesn't feel anything for her it's still cold, I had no love lost for season 11 amara but season 15 amara seems cool, she just wants to experience food and culture, I love the dean and amara scene so much and that they brought up Mary. Cas using a pic of himself in the tombstone custom to summon a crossroads demon is such a delightful plot twist because you know that means someone took a photo of cas in his cowboy hat and you just know it was dean, the one who made him wear the cowboy hat in the first place, DEAN MUST HAVE THOUGHT CAS LOOKED TOO CUTE IN A COWBOY HAT TO NOT HAVE A PICTURE OF IT, aaaaaah. I hate that jack feels that he's letting all of his dads down 😭, but i love cas's speech about having a family and finding who you are and having a son 🥺🥰, I hope jack learned that at least he's not letting cas down. The pastor's daughter didn't blame him for her mom's death, she is mad he didn't agree to her mom refusing to go to a doctor, her mom was super fundamentalist and believed her illness was "god's will" and that god was calling her while the pastor wasn't as much as a fundamentalist as the mom, clearly the daughter followed the mom's footsteps and thought that her father changed things for the worst by accepting "all kinds of people" and changing it from a church to a faith based community, remember what she told jack about Connor, that they used to "date" more like they watched old movies together, then the pastor told cas that Connor was a gay man who practices his faith, so she definitely thought they were dating in her mind and that he betrayed her by being gay? So she wrote liar on his chest after killing him, so that was his "sin" Lying even though they only watched old movies together and were probably just friends, the girl definitely has issues, I actually like the motw case in this episode, tho evidently I still don't get how that teady Bear at the beginning was talking 😂, I find it very interesting that the crossroads demon ends up taking the killer, I wonder if he's doing it on Rowena's orders or if he's taking things into his own hands, does Rowena run a rehabilitation center at hell? Do awful people like this girl who killed innocent people get another chance or get tortured. The difference imo between jack sacrificing himself to save the world here and Sam in season 8 is that as jack states his reason here he says " it's the only way they'll forgive me" he's doing it because he genuinely believes that dean will never forgive him for killing Mary, and that he always"let's his dads down" as he said in this episod, these are not good reasons to sacrifice yourself while Sam was doing it for the greater good or at least I believe so. I love that cas seems to be telling dean what jack said at the end of this episode here, he really learned not to keep secrets after their last break up 🥰, it's called growth. Also not both dean and cas tearing up in this episode ( dean in the scene with amara and cas when jack told him he will die) I can't take both of my boys tearing up but they're both amazing actors so I guess I enjoyed it too

Loved everything you said in these comments, rose 🥰

To be honest I can't tell anymore how much i just love s15 vs how i'm just sentimental about it, and about where the characters are in their arcs. I so so appreciated your appreciation of Dean's anger. I don't have the trauma and anger he does and I think I would be raging even harder if that was my life. This episode isn't 100% but it does have two of my favorite scenes of all time. Cas talking about how he found a family, and became a father?! My heart! and Dean and Amara, and Jensens pitch perfect reactions to Amara's reasons - "now is always better than then." Looking back on this season there's a few ways to view it and the way I've come to love it is through minutiae and details. Some purposeful, i'm sure, and some in the grand tradition of supernatural - happy accidents. I also loved in this episode how we had observant Sam, watching out for Jack and concerned. He Knew. Also i loved every Deancas moment. They just act like long-term partners (however you want to perceive that) and it warms my heart.

Josh Poulton

Shelly I just wanted to say that I have love and appreciation for you for going along in this journey.. after this episode we're in for the long stretch and I will cry with you

AdoptDontShopPets

Vel, Rose said “IMO.” If you are truly ok with people’s headcanons and interpretations of the show, I don’t know why you felt a need to comment to ask for proof.

CrystalDeth

Retconning Amara's bloodshed to make her a victim is so strange as is the change of wisdom, deep emotional lesson instead of the 'gift' of Mary...yep, reasons I stopped watching this season. Jensen and Emily really played these new characters so well!
