Hey Friends!

Welcome back to Wednesday with the Wives and another episode of When Life Gives You Tangerines. Today we are moving on to Episode 9. Last episode had some beautiful moments and we see how Geum-myeong is taking on and living her mothers dreams. We also got to meet Geum-myeong's boyfriend and we possibly saw a flash forward to a wedding. But whos?! Let's go ahead and get into Ep 9.

Not a lot happens today but we still get plenty. And no tears!

Ae-soon and Gwan-sik settle into their new place and put their dreams on hold while Geum-myeong is trying to settle in to her life. She also meets someone new! We think something will flourish here and can't wait to find out. We also get to meet Eun-myeong girlfriend who he has been hiding in his wardrobe, which seems to be a common thing in this show. 😊

We still have a lot of show left and can't wait to jump back in Saturday.

I see some smacking ahead...

Such a funny episode! Like you, I too was surprised that it ended in what seemed like such a short time! One of the many things I love about this show is that there's no way to predetermine what's going to happen or who is going to be with who, its not predictable at all!

As I mentioned on your previous video, I’m basically watching this show right along with you, so I’ve only seen up to episode 9. I have a question (or maybe a theory): Did Ae-sun think her son was gay? I ask because she seemed to be in on it when she found out he had a male friend in his room. And when Gwan-sik found out and tried to open the door, she stopped him by bringing up what he had done when they were young, like drawing a parallel between their own youthful romance and what was happening with her son. Also, at school, she told the teacher that her son doesn't get along with girls and wouldn't cause any trouble in that regard. So, did she think her son was gay, or am I reading too much into it? It's just a small theory, and it doesn't matter whether it's true or not. It just made me curious.

The owner of the boarding house is the father of the MC in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, that is why you are familiar with him

I think Ae-sun didn't contribute anything to the purchase price bc of the study abroad cost, like you both said ❤️ In-laws with Sugar Cube would be insane hahahaha And about Geum-myeong's living situation, I think she was trying to play it up because she is a little embarrassed about her poverty and/or didn't want him to worry. And her (rich) boyfriend telling her like "why did you choose this" rubbed her the wrong way, because she kind of didn't have a choice. It was a little insulting too, which parallels the painter's convo with his ex-gf. Like making you feel humiliated (even if rich boy didn't mean it) about your circumstances without trying to understand them. The Aema horse painting is funny because Aema is one of the first erotic films made in SK that was VERY popular 😂 and the painter only painted horses, not people HAHAHAHAH (that's why Geum-myeong said, "I'm surprised he hasn't been fired yet" when she saw the painting hahahah I'm laughing all over again.) "No skin colored paint in Aema????" is the cinema owner being confused about the artist's choices too hahaha I totally agree that the episode felt SO SHORT lol. It makes you so invested in their lives.

1. The landlord is Woo Young-Woo's dad from Extraordinary Attorney Woo. 2. The store was going to be a 4 way partnership between Ae-Sun and the 3 Aunties. But after giving all their money to Geum-Myeong to study abroad, she isn't able to invest for her part of the store. So now it's just 3 Aunties, but they let her set up shop in front of the store and Ae-Sun says she won't sell the same fish that the aunties are selling. 3. You have now been introduced Kim Seon-Ho, who plays the scruffy looking artist who works at the theater. That means you need to watch him as the lead in the universally beloved drama, Hometown Cha Cha Cha.

I think Geum-myeong and Yeong-bom saw the neigborhood differently. Yeong-bom sees the vandalisms on the wall while Geum-myeong sees the little bicycle, stickers on the light posts and clothes hanging leaving an impression that there are also happy families living in the neighborhood..

Little fun fact - the pearl wardrobe Ae-sun treasured so much - these are Korean mother-of-pearl najeonchilgi (나전칠기) furniture, expensive because they are handcrafted with handpicked pieces of shells such as peal oyster, abalone and mollusk which give those complex reflective colours/patterns. Even today a large wardrobe like that one in this show, if crafted by great craftsmen, that can cost a couple thousands to even up to tens of thousands USD each or could be even more if it's a well-preserved historical antique piece in auctions. Prices would also be different depending on what wood was used e.g. pine, aelkova, chestnut, etc. and what kind/size of furniture e.g. cabniet, jewelry box, table etc. Also what art patterns /motifs - differnt plants, flower, animals, insects, landscapes, geometric all have different cultural symbolic meanings. So Jeju or southern coastal area where fishing is their main industry, there were all these shells come from and hence historically these furniture were made in. Making these require tons of work sanding, polishing and varnishing work by hand - bc each shell pattern shape is so different and can't really mass produce with machines. Each piece reuquires over 30 steps and can take from several months to years. The technique of making these are now pretty much classified as cultural heritage and not many trained craftsmen are still making these. Because of how authentic these furniture are, they are symbol of wealth & longevity - hence were very high-value traditional wedding gifts in the old days. Now with modernization, not many modern home would have them but you might see them in old grandma's village home, but they are still considered high value pieces.
