For months, the Club Random Substack has been uploading videos where that week's guest helps Bill Maher "decode" comics from his thirty year collection of New Yorker comic strips. This left me with many questions: Does Bill Maher have some special knowledge or affinity for New Yorker strips? Do the guests seem to enjoy the bit? Is the bit particularly funny?

1. Unclear, though he does not display any.2. No.3. Definitely not.

The experience ended up being baffling and weird and... I don't know what, which I guess is the danger with doing these live reactions. This is sort of a spiritual successor to the episode about the Club Random ads because I play A LOT of clips. I'm actually in the video, so this one is probably best experienced in that format.

This is also available in audio only.

Bill keeps harping on describing the picture right, or else it isn't funny. And yet when he doesn't get the joke, he never says "I described the picture wrong"

Kudos To You

I don't know why this is entertaining but it is. I want to watch you suffer through all of these.

I could listen to you read the phone book. 🤣 What is a modern term for phone book. Apple terms and conditions?

They may not be in a paper bag, but that squared bowl certainly looks like a bathroom garbage can to me 😆🫣

55:30, I found it funny that Maher slurs so much at the end of the segment with Tom Greene that the generated captions read "jealous" when he must have said "gems." (From: "Okay, well they can't all be _____")

DBC

Charlie Kirk's Ventriloquist routine gets the highest score possible from the judges for degree of difficulty.

Every other episode of the podcast has replay value for me, but this one is just so flat and devoid of interesting content that I don't think I'll listen to it more than once. Time for another John Hastings episode!

I really appreciate the facial expressions we get from you in the video episodes

Also Tim Poole looks like he's humoring his old man

Trapped in a cycle of boomerism.

Stackies on Stackies on Stackies

Sheesh, Bill reached for that sack full of New Yorker cartoons like The Irishman schlepping a side of beef around the 1950s

You just know having a handsome black guy like Terrance Howard openly laugh in his face for wasting everyones time with this bit really kept Bill up at night.
