For months, the Club Random Substack has been uploading videos where that week's guest helps Bill Maher "decode" comics from his thirty year collection of New Yorker comic strips. This left me with many questions: Does Bill Maher have some special knowledge or affinity for New Yorker strips? Do the guests seem to enjoy the bit? Is the bit particularly funny?

1. Unclear, though he does not display any.2. No.3. Definitely not.

The experience ended up being baffling and weird and... I don't know what, which I guess is the danger with doing these live reactions. This is sort of a spiritual successor to the episode about the Club Random ads because I play A LOT of clips. I'm actually in the video, so this one is probably best experienced in that format.

Cclear: watch He Walked by Night (1948)

I just downloaded this to listen to on my flight that's about to take off. I'm buckled up because it's going to be a bumpy ride 😵‍💫

One reason I hate bill maher is because he’s one of those people who makes everyone deal with his stupid stoner bullshit. How does he still make money doing this

I cannot believe how terrible this is. I think it might be the worst content ever put on the Internet. He says, "this is fun" to introduce the segment. He is fucking insane. Will, you will never even come close to being like him because you care about being entertaining and you're also not a pathological narcissist. Bill Maher = definition of white male privilege. How else can this be explained?

Marcus Wrightus

Omfg! I'm dying! There is no fucking second verse to the Star Spangled Banner. There is also nothing racist in the song. It is about a sea battle.

Marcus Wrightus

I stand corrected. There are in fact four verses. I have never heard more than one sung in my life. Cartoon is not funny regardless.

This is the first time I ever found Bill Maher endearing. I don't know, just something is so pitiful about this

i had to come back to this. this is unreal. this is the Rosetta Stone. it could not be less funny, executed worse, more misguided or bizarre or painful for both audience and viewer. if you meet someone who has never heard of Bill Maher before, you simply have to show them one of these three minute clips to evoke his entire existence. The fact that they don't even show you the cartoon after stumbling through the insanely dry descriptions is poetry. it rhymes. it's George Lucas. the fact that even Saint Kirk (hallowed be His name) had to bumble through it is perfection. In fact I've circled back around to it being genius. this premise is sublime. it's modern Dante
