Because she was raised in a very sheltered space where she was often the smartest (or at least the most talkative) voice in the classroom, Honey has a teeeny habit of assuming other people aren’t quite on her intellectual level. Mal is Topher’s sleepy-eyed roommate who seems to be a bit of a layabout (quite typical for a feline, Honey thinks), but Honey likes her anyway, and would like to recommend her a wonderful introductory work from her very favorite author! Something to stimulate Mal’s brain just a bit better than Topher’s rantings or their dreadful dope-smoking, goodness!

Mal is almost twice Honey’s age and has a Ph.D, not that Honey would know that. Still, she hasn’t set foot on a university campus in ages, she’s a little rusty at dissecting literature, but she’s always down to have a good discussion with a friend. Honey, meanwhile, hasn’t actually cracked open the book since high school and is feeling just a teensy bit out of her depth.

Mal: yeah I don’t have a real opinion on that sorry

Mal: *gives a two hour lecture*

Honey is holding Anthem by Ayn Rand btw

Vicky Hadley

I feel that, Mal My degree sits quietly until literature topics come up and it starts glowing like one of the doors in Encanto 💀💀💀

shield

honey's favorite author being ayn rand 😭😭😭😭

Tibbles Yorkie789

Reading the background with google at the ready! (Im bad at words-)

WAr

Does Mal know what Honey was up to there and was flexing a little to show off or just genuinely trying to engage in a thoughtful conversation about the book?

MEllegoo

I love how mal’s tail slowly changes from black to white by going through shades of orange. It’s a small detail that I love

CardstockBroth

Ahhhh Honey being casually outdone by people she makes assumptions about is my favorite

knickknacks

Oooh, how does Honey react to such critiques of her beloved Ayn Rand? I imagine she’s. Defensive and embarrassed at first- does she actually listen to what Mal has to say, or kind of tune it out because she doesn’t want to be forced to reckon with her own lack of understanding?

lopoddity

Both. >:3 On one hand Mal is engaging Honey in good faith and genuinely enjoys discussing literature, on the other hand, she didn’t have much recourse when a little cocker spaniel got up in her face with a biiiig slightly condescending smile and a 9th grade piece of objectivist propaganda, “Malika, dear, are you much of a reader?”. Big time, square up bitch She’s being a lot more welcoming than Topher, who would’ve simply called Honey’s tastes dogshit and walked away

Also hell yeah to Mal having a PhD and remaining a deep thinker while also having left the pretensions of academia behind her

This is too hilarious to me for the craziest reasons. Like Mal, although I'm a little rusty, I'm one of the few in my family with a degree in something intellectual (art&culture). I'm not good at remembering dates and names, but analyzing obsessively I'm pretty decent. I am in a circle full of Honeys who think they are the smartest in the room and assume that I am "immature" or even "credulous, afraid of people" who know nothing about the world because "I lack street" so my Ignorant opinion is not valid to be considered. I had a cringe phase as a teenager where I was falsely pedantic with my peers because my good grades and good behavior were the only thing that gave a sense of importance to my little past self, furiously hiding the pain of not being able to fit in with my classmates and be used many times as basically a maid for class assignments. Of course, I quickly overcame that bad habit thanks to therapy, and I learned to appreciate all types of intelligence. Ignorance is basically the lack of knowledge of a subject and we are all ignorant at some point or another. This scene remains a very particular situation, let me explain for context: As a Latina, let me tell you that there is a very strong hatred towards communism and socialism or any similar idea in many Latinoamérica countries, because many countries here have been destroyed and their dictatorships are still in force, hurting people, their "presidens" have all this promises that ended being lies to open the gates of hell. Many of these groups have the most money and power but they speak bad off capitalism while they possess more that any rich person while having the people in misery, hunger, and fear, making this "presidents" in the eyes of the public the biggest hypocrites, not to mention the other members traitors because they sold their own people to save themselves during the persecution and left to those who could not flee to their horrible fate, not to mention blaming the innocent using them as scapegoats, many innocent victims whose only sin was freedom of expression. BUT when I say in conversations that this "great purpose" of "cleansing Chile of the communist virus" was propaganda by the dictatorship to create an enemy and so that people would not question the atrocities that were committed by the militia under the command of the general/dictator, when I explain that just because this tyrant "fixed" the country from being "another hungry land" does not mean that we should not talk about the crimes against human rights that both citizens and soldiers who opposed the tyranny suffered, when I say that they use the pain of the dictatorship in the same way that they now use the needs of the communities for their agenda to appear as the "the good guys" for one side and the others they create propaganda demonizing the people of these communities making the public blame them and not the government, suddenly I'm the little girl who doesn't know what she's talking about because I wasn't there. And not to mention when there are topics of books, feminism or lgtb+, God that is a minefield, I feel like I am talking to a bunch of snotty snotty people and they are old people in their 50s. Now I know why my dad always says never talk about this kind of stuff with these people, you only feel exhausted after, but JESUCRISTO I look chill but I can talk A LOT, and I won't ever stop, sorry dad I'm petty😅

God, I love Mal so much I feel that about not having been on campus in years (I graduated from undergrad in 2019 and I deeply miss and ache for my old campus, but I can't afford to go back for my Master's/PhD right now). Meanwhile I'm still writing essays on SU when people willfully misinterpret Rose's character and writing long character replies with my writing partner where we dissect difficult and painful topics in life and find ways to better digest and disseminate our own traumas as a hobby 💀 I feel like I'd fall somewhere between Topher and Mal in this scenario tbh I wonder (hope even) that Honey and Mal might get closer on the off-chance Honey might be willing to listen and confront her own hypocritical biases, she's such a little disaster and I love whenever you make another piece about her.

cactus bastrop

lmao the classic young conservative arrogance that a grown adult twice your age is gonna change their entire political view just from reading some ayn rand... feel like to mal honey might as well have been like "do you enjoy reading? there's this great book i've been thinking about, it's called green eggs and ham,"

lopoddity

Honey is feeling defensive right now, and would probably tune Mal out if she was being mean about it. Mostly Honey has no idea what Mal is talking about. But there’s definitely room for the two of them to have a nice discussion, Mal can be pretty sneaky. Mal: But listen to me yammerin’ on! What’s YOUR take on the book, hon-bun? Honey, turning pink: Um….I….U-Um, admittedly, I haven’t read the novel in a while. But….I always liked how at the end, the protagonist named himself. He was just a number before, a cog in a cruel system. But when he finally escapes, he chooses to call himself Prometheus. He was finally free to do that…I, um…I just think that’s nice. Mal: I agree! People should be free to define their own identities. That was a pretty powerful moment, not gonna lie. Honey, tail wagging because yay approval!: I’m so glad you agree! Mal: Of course! I know a thing or two about feeling like a cog. I chose my own name too, you know. The one my parents picked for me never quite fit. Honey: You changed your birth name….? Oh dear. That doesn’t, um, seem very respectful of you…. Mal: Maybe, but sometimes we have to act in our own self-interest. That’s a key tenet of Rand’s philosophy, isn’t it? *winks* Honey, eyes going wide: Why…..you’re right! Dear Malika, you’re just like Prometheus! Forging your own path! Choosing a name all your own! I…I could never go against my parents like that. Goodness, you must be so brave…. Mal, bashful: Haha, well, I dunno….

cactus bastrop

should add that i'm speaking from experience here (i handmade mccain palin pins to wear in middle school 😭) which is what makes it so funny to me. i pulled my head outta my ass way earlier than honey did (will?) but to be fair my parents were just the annoying run of the mill conservative type and not the hyperreligious "god hates you for being gay" type, which may increase de-jackassifying time. but like babydoll you are not the smartest 13 year old in the world your brain is just rotted from being forced to listen to sean hannity on the way home from soccer practice

Jay Martinez

Now I need to see honey’s reaction to finding out that Mal has a phd

Melody Williamson

There's no way she read that in middle school 😭

Robo87

I just want to sit on Mal’s lap and be gently held while she destroys morally terrible authors

lopoddity

'Anthem' is very simplistic and short, and Mal was a child prodigy. If a kid can grasp similar dystopian works like The Giver or The Hunger Games, they can definitely read Anthem. It was assigned reading for me in 9th grade. :>

Kenzie Leong

Man now I want to sit down and discuss my favorite childhood dystopian novellas with Mal. Hopefully she liked The Last Book in the Universe a little better. Trying to think of a good animal pun name for Ayn Rand. Ant Rand? Ayn Rat? Ayn Panda?

Bigsmile

Honey!!! Get outta the way! I'm trying to read Mal's criticism of that self indulging nonsense book!!! 😠

Bigsmile

To be fair...... Topher ain't wrong to do so

lopoddity

I tried to make it semi-understandable, but some stuff inevitably got obscured. You can't make it out, but Mal says "The narrative serves as a propagandistic vehicle for objectivist philosophy, which I of course do not fuck with".

lopoddity

Topher does that and noses Mal's hand to gib him pets

Bigsmile

I ain't no PHD literature fella, but objectivism just seems like a justification for being a selfish asshole. I don't fucks with it neither 💯

Melody Williamson

You know what I didn't even zoom in enough to see the title. I just saw ayn rand and the critique and just assumed it was atlas shrugged 😅

gamigami

i just got back from my trip and ive gotta say, reading up on all these new posts and seeing your characters is such a treat! also you've totally got the leopard spots nailed down!! you draw them in the perfect way that isn't too systematic but still has a sense of togetherness (idk how to describe this properly lol) also would like to know what Honey thinks of 1984 lol I recently had a middle school kid tell me it was the deepest book they've ever read (i'll be honest i think i've read Dr. Seuss books that are deeper) so i wonder if Honey shares that same sentiment

Doglover502

Honey’s really about to be like Brian Griffin Honey: ….Do you have Jaws here? I-I’d like to talk about Jaws Mal: Oh! By Peter Badgeley? Honey: (chuckle) No, by Steven Spoonberg (Sorry these animal name puns are so bad it’s like 1 am, I figured Spielberg is Like a spoonbill)

Robo87

Lucky bitch 😢

Emily Lemur

I love watching the foundations of a character getting rocked. I would’ve fired back with a “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” because of its theme of complicity in an unjust society would either strike a nerve with Honey or go right over her cutesy lil’ puppy head… Mal’s critique is spot on!

D

Obsessed with this and it’s making me deep dive on Wikipedia about Ayn Rand and objectivism. Would you mind maybe attaching Mal’s thought bubble where none of it is obscured? I love literary analysis and I love Mal

D

Um … screaming at this ??

lopoddity

No problem! She says "h'oh yeah, I remember readin' that shit in middle school. Can't say I have a lot to say about it, like it's a decent baby's first dystopian novel, but the premise is squandered on the tedious writing style and maladroit themes. Not to say I think collectivism is beyond critique, 'cuz person identity an' liberty are hella important, but I can't help but feel that the author's own traumatic past is what led to her penning a virulent repudiation of socialism that mutates into an overcorrected ethos on selfishness qua individualism. The narrative functions as a propagandistic vehicle for objectivist philosophy, which I of course do not fuck with from like a purely empathetic perspective. But barring my personal opinion, the author's pontification is damaged by her frequent syllogisms, which are unfortunately a running defect throughout her body of work. And for the narrative's obsession with ego, ain't it interesting that the only female character has no autonomy or personality besidss agreeing with the male protag an' havin' his babies at the end? And that's not even gettin' into the stitled dialogue, the flawed worldbuilding, the disdain for service workers-"

D

Yes thank you !! Now it’s time to google what a syllogism is

knickknacks

Honey frantically rehearsing her talking points before the next time she sees Mal because she wants Mal to be SO IMPRESSED by how smart she and her right-wing sensibilities are!! Only to be stopped short by Mal a) kindly but firmly not taking any of her bullshit and b) poking plenty of holes in Honey's arguments without breaking a sweat I am deeply in love with Mal btw. the way you write her. every time

feathermaws

With every post of Mal I fall more in love with her 💞😭 Also I just noticed noticed her tail and I love how it lightens at the end
