Tumblr has apparently decided that June 24th is annual Make A Terrible Comic Day, so I decided to dust this thing off. I had it sitting on the backburner because I felt the punchline was kinda ehh, but in the spirit of the holiday I must share it! >:O Before anyone asks, I’m not sure if this is canon. Probably just a one-off gag!

A lot of Honey’s general shittiness-as-a-person is intentional, but some of it comes from the fact she’s just kinda dumb. Dumb and sheltered. To her, “transgender person” = trans woman. Trans women are the ones centered in every discussion she’s ever heard on trans people, for example- her church claiming a bunch of drag queens organizing weekly children’s book read-aloud days at the local library was really a pack of wicked trans women hoping to ensnare poor innocent children into their wicked coven of L-G-B-Tees!! >:O It’s news to Honey that men can be trans. In case the comic isn’t clear, Honey assumes her brother is a cis man suddenly expressing a desire to transition into being a woman…..not what he actually is, a trans man. Who has been openly trans for about as long as she’s been alive.

Honey: Well, I’m not sure I quite understand your decision, Topher, but you’re still my family, and I’ve decided that nothing can ever change that, so…..if this is who you wanna be, I’ll call you my sister if it makes you happy. 😌 😇

Topher: …….

LMAO I’ve had an experience like this, a transmasc friend of mine was talking abt his experience taking T and my (very well-meaning) cishet guy friend went “wait….are you trying to become a girl???”

She's a little confused, but she has the spirit

Morghann Patterson

That is sweet in its own way though, at least for her. Supportive… in the opposite direction. She’ll get it at some point probably.

yaboyrobin

she's a little confysed but she's got spirit

L In Motion

Your honor: she's an idiot. But i love these family dynamics, so Yay for the spirit of Terrible Comic Day!

QuietZen

Yeah I can totally see some sheltered church kid not grasping the concept of trans men. Its crazy how people forget they exist

TheHaywaiianHorse

Oh no..no Honey no 😂😂 The poor stoopid babey..

lopoddity

hmm kinda, but not really. To the tune of DBZ Abridged: Honey: Oh, I know! I'm gonna call you Big Sis! :D Topher: Call me that again and I'll snap your neck

FaeMoona

I love honey she's perfect

Ok even I was not that ignorant as a latina raised súper religious teen 🤣🤣🤣 Sure we use "not good language" not offensive but certainly not appropriate, like not many knew the word trans, so we use "once a woman now a men" and vice versa. But in my innocent child mind I was like "wait so the doctor write the wrong gender at birth, that's dumb!" or "Oh so people can choose the gender they want that's cool, I just want to be a man maybe once so people actually respect me and maybe not to have to suffer once a month with my menstruation, stupid teen body" I didnt know all the process, discrimination, pain, etc, I thought that people could do with their bodies and lives what they wanted as long nobody or them get hurt. I didn't realize how wrong I was, but it was hard to have information when not even the specific books were accessible to everybody. I was the total opposite to Honey growing up, I have a hard time because I asked to many questions and when I couldn't believe the answer, the adults make me feel stupid, annoying and that something was wrong with me, expect my parents they respond what they could but not always, if they don't have the answer they consult a book or admit they couldn't answer with sincerity because they didn't want to impose their point of view, they raise me as free thinker. I still remember when I make my cience teacher start to rethinking his life with my question cuz he honest to God have no idea, he wasn't prepared to my type of questions, at least he was nice about it 🤣 It was the time when the school teaches the first sexual education classes, like how pregnancy happen, illness, protection, puberty, etc. And I ask him things like "Mister if there is condoms why there's nothing like that for women, sure there is pill and operations but isn't fair! Why female condom? Also why you didn't teach us about protect between same sex couples? They don't need it? But the germs in the genitals are the same! Isn't the reason why sida was so bad treated in the past is because they thought it was a gay virus? So why don't teach protection for everybody? Also I read about people who change they gender, how is that? They take hormones? How you take that? They have insurance? In theory is medicine so why not? They can get pregnant? How is the operation? Is safe for them? Doctors can be so mean I hope they treat them well. Oh and intersex people! What exactly are they? How parents raise them if they don't know their gender? Like boy or gir acording to what they look more likel? I hope every single one of them is treated with love from their parents, because people are so cruel with anything different. Oh speaking of gender, why when women want the operation to not be have children doctors are insisting in waiting and being sexist jersk, but with men not? For men the operation is quick. Oh that remains me, why the laws against abortion are written for people without an uterus? isn't weird? The same with people that say is a sin, is not a theme outside their territory, because my dad is religious and he say that religion and medicine shouldn't mix when people health is in line, the same with politics, since each one is a unique theme, because it's basic humans right, oh oh and teacher why?....." Yeah ... I was a curious curious chatterbox 🤣 Was Honey ever a curious child asking always why? Or it was the type that their environment kill every since of curiosity because adults are always right? And as an adult, Honey doesn't feel at least a little of "oh as a child I never knew this so I'm going to search and ask"?

I'd honestly love for this to be canon; after living with Topher for a while, during which time Honey slowly (and painstakingly for everyone involved) dismantled her harmful and bigoted beliefs (not fully there, but about 80%), she finally picks up on the fact that her brother has been stating that he is very much Not Cis™️ for years now, and this is exactly how it goes down. I can imagine after Toffee explains that trans men exist, and that is what Topher is, Honey responds "Oh...damn. I was kinda hoping to have a sister there for a second. You mean I'm still stuck with two brothers?" and the fact that she has gotten to the point where she just casually accepts Topher for who he is (which is even a mild surprise to her) Topher hugs her while calling her a "Sheltered idiot 💕"

lopoddity

Yep! Honey was a curious child, but was frequently hushed and dismissed whenever she asked questions. "That's just the way things are", "Because I said so", "We can't presume to know the almighty's plan". So she stopped asking questions, and has tried very hard to be obedient and faithful, but she's still got a ton of curiosity niggling at the back of her head, waiting to find somebody who will entertain her questions. Honey is a bigot, but unlike many real world bigots, she can be reasoned with, and can modify her world view when she encounters new information. This means she has the capacity to be deprogrammed quite quickly....if she falls in with the kind of crowd who encourage her curiosity, not attempt to snuff it out

lopoddity

She's literally horrible XD just the WORST

Bigsmile

I mean.... I think she's trying to be less shitty, so good for her? 🤷‍♂️ I'm guessing this is during her deprogramming arc

D

Wait til she learns Mal is a big scary trans woman- and also happens to be the best giver of warm squeezy hugs in the entire world

lopoddity

Every Honey scene techically takes place in her deprogramming arc, it is constant and ongoing :3 I promise she gets better~

Cerulean

I'm honestly excited to see Honey get deprogrammed! She's lowkey a favorite of mine and seeing her slowly change for the better makes me happy.

Bigsmile

Lol, I mean, I know, but every once in awhile she says some crazy ignorant nonsense that reminds me too much of people I know 🤣 😂! But Honey still manages to be so damn likeable and I can't pin down why

mirarevias

Ahh... She's, uh... Doing her best! 🥴

Yesss, the moment I wanted to see for so long.

The Faerie Merchant

This is so funny omfg Quick question. Does that mean her parents didn’t misgender topher growing up? (I know they’re estranged, but still) or rather just. Pretended he never existed ever.

lopoddity

A combination of both. Merry all but severed his relationship with his sons when it became clear they were never going to be the children he wanted. He doesn't really talk about them to Honey except in passing. He refers to Topher as his son only because by the time Honey is old enough to understand, Topher is so far into his transition that Merry can't really misgender him anymore without sounding like he's going senile. He gets funny looks if he tries to call that scruffy, deep-voiced fellow his "daughter", so he doesn't. To be clear, he would absolutely misgender Topher in public if he felt he could get away with it, and he does go out of his way to misgender Topher when they're speaking together privately. Merry is a cruel man, but a very socially conscious one, so to the public (and to Honey), it's simpler for him to pretend he has two wayward sons, and has all along. Honey really had no idea Topher was trans, Merry did his best to keep her away from her brothers growing up, and kept all photos of his first family in a locked box.

I'm getting flashbacks to Bob calling her "Queen Dumbass"
