Ponies draw their magic from the forces of harmony, with friendship being the most powerful form of magic. As Moondancer draws more upon dark magic and ultimately severs his connection to harmony, his coat and mane become drab and limp. It's an extremely unnatural way for ponies to exist, and for all his newfound power, he's literally rotting from the inside out. :3

Pandora turns pink, looking sheepish and ridiculous. "...Yeah." "...Cupcake." Pan only flushes darker and scuffs the floor with her paw, attempting and failing to suppress a goofy smile. "Yeah." "Why?" Pandora thinks for a moment. "Because she's Cupcake." She settles on, "...And she loves me." "And that's enough?" Moondancer feels more confused than hurt. "That's all you need?" "It's all I've ever needed." Pan says. Earnest. Happy. Ridiculous as ever. "...She's an earth pony." He tries. "No magic." "She's loyal, brave, dependable, kind, honest, and she always "yes and"s my improv, no matter how lame. She's got eyes the color of cotton candy and muscles that can fold me like a balloon animal. She makes me feel like magic, Moony." Pandora speaks in a whisper, as though she can hardly believe her own words. "And out of every creature in Equestria...she loves ME. Chose me." "Hm." Moondancer sinks back into his hospital bed. The place where his horn used to be has begun to ache. All he wants to do is sleep, perhaps for the next few centuries. "...I'm happy for you, Panny." Pandora regards him warily. "Are you really?" Moondancer lets his eyes fall shut. "No." He mumbles. "But....perhaps I could be. Someday. Maybe."

The tradegy of a doomed one sided... love? Though can it even be called that by the end. If only Moony had put aside his own insecurities, realized Panny didn't need someone to "challenge" her (magic wise) someone with powers to match her own. Panny never needed anyone to PROVE their worth to her. She wanted someone to find HER worthy. Unconditional love and acceptance. If only he realized that sooner. (Not that I would ever prefer Whatever ship name is for moon and Pandora to the powerful love of two WOMEN but what ifs are fun. Part of me loves Moony because I am a SUCKER for unrequited love and longing but dude you all you literally had to do was be nice. Panny is unfortunately starved for affection and love and acceptance he would have gotten so much farther by just being NICE to her but no he had to become mr magic sucking edge lord. Bro never had a chance with that approach) (BTW this small story reply will feed me for YEARS. I was wanting this interaction for YEARS. Honestly all these years later I'm low-key still stewing over how dirty Chakra got done in the main story arc like Midnight's moms not believing/turning on him while Moony just stood there and Watched was so infuriating I hope he gets the vindication he rightly deserves in the end 😭

If I remember my pandoraverse lore right, I believe his actual talent laid in dancing! His cutie mark was a ribbon/pennant, but he misconstrued it to be a magic wand, holding himself to the standard of wanting to do something Bigger and more Important with his life than the thing that would have made him the happiest..
