A long overdue answer! Our dear Ash was unfortunately born into the Secret Sun, a fringe cult of bat ponies that believe that their species must repent for aiding Nightmare Moon during her attach on Equestria. The colony can be identified by the sun-shaped marks that they ritualistically brand into their chests. The cult is lead by Ash's biological mother, Sunflower.

Uffff that's mess up is soooo many level I can't even imagine 😬 Honestly I thought those were injuries for ehm whippings, cuts, or chains, but burns?! I don't even know what's worse. And I remember you once write that Celestia and Luna don't tolerate totalitarian/cults in their kingdom, absolutely hate, so I wonder if for some miracle/coincidence they found this cult, I wonder how the members would react when Celestia look at them with anger and disgust, especially their leader for what they are doing "on her name". This also remind me to this scene in Castlevania Nocturne how this character totally misinterpreted the message and did unimaginable things in the name of her goddess, and when the essence of the goddess rebuked her to stop her in her madness for power "in her name," the character, while battling, said in tears, "I thought this was what you wanted! I thought this is what you wanted!" and the disappointed goddess said something like, "Who wanted this?"

oh damn...I remember Ash from othe sketch dumps DeviantArt days and this little bat baby has been stuck in my brain since then...wow. This poor child. I hope she found peace with Chakra, Nocturnus and Prim. Tho..the true crime nerd in me needs more of this cult and what happened to it, and Oh shit Sunflower!!

Wasn't Chakra associates with Sunflower? Is that still canon? Cuz if so him eventually ending up with custody of her baby girl is very interesting

He probably partied in the woods with her and a bunch of other hippies way back in the day. As a former sketchy manipulator himself, he'd probably be proud of her for starting a successful cult full of rubes who hang on her every word....y'know, if it weren't for the ritualistic mutilation and child abuse part

Do we know who her biological father is, by chance? A random cult member I presume but, does she have a relationship with him at all?

Even if Sunflower knew (and she doesn't, she really gets around), she wouldn't tell Ash. All the better to keep Ash isolated and entirely dependent on her and the cult.

oooh i sorta remember this. omg the sun cult! Poor Ash (´- `*) i can only imagine the cult's teaching about Equestria's Sun and Moon princesses vs how they actually are. Can you imagine Celestia discovering the cult and seeing her cutie marked burned into the flesh of innocent bat pony foals OR Luna returning from the moon finding out about the cult and adding it an another guilt to her conscience even if it's not her fault some wacko in the woods used her and Celestia's fight as reason to control people. Ah! Ash coming face to face with either of them the so-called sun angel and moon demon. ur brain is huge and full of good stories. please 🙏🏿 never stop

I like the idea of Ash shaving her whole arm when she gets older to tattoo over the burn marks, not to cover them, but to make something better of it than her trauma. When the hair does grow back and the specific spots are uncovered by fur it creates this beautiful illusion, like a work of art.

Does sunflower believe in her own gospel about bat ponies needing to be purified and cleansed or does she just use it solely for control of her cult?

Unclear. Sunflower's serene smile hides a profoundly unwell mind. She has quite a lot of paranoia and obsessive feelings of spiritual uncleanliness regarding her own status as a bat pony (a species that to this day remains somewhat stigmatized by broader ponykind). Sunflower wants to be adored, and more importantly she wants to be seen as as perfect and pure as the sun goddess herself. She's, ah, more than a little obsessed with Celestia. She projects her own issues onto the rest of her species, and in "purifying" them, hopes to purify and elevate herself, proving herself as a savior to her kind. Sunflower especially fixates on "saving" children, and although she does not permit Ash to acknowledge their relationship aloud, she was raising Ash to be her beloved and precious sacrificial lamb- er, successor.

I am almost sad you are mostly past your pony days because the potential for the writing for this!!! I imagine she'd also make her cult ho against their nocturnal behaviors and force them to sleep during the night and work through the day. Complaining or sleeping during the day be an act of sin and rejection of "purity" and must be punished or cleansed. Changing theor diets and going against natural instincts to act in a more "pony" way. Makes me really excited for you to explore the cult Lune and his sister grew up in.

Do either Celestia or Luna know about the cult? I'd love to see either going full deific wrath on them, or going at them with a metal chair while screaming about how they're monsters for abusing children. And poor Luna, realizing her time as Nightmare Moon indirectly created this cult. I could see Celestia taking the lead on taking them down, the sun goddess taking down the Secret Sun cult, in the name of the moon and Luna. Also I do remember the so-called legend about how batponies were formed by Nightmare Moon 'blessing' regular ponies and them becoming shunned and reviled afterwards. Is the story actually true, or was the actual origin lost to history?
