boreanSlumber

how to explain to parents that you got the artistic autism and not the doctor one XD

Biscuit

I immediately imagined your mom’s voice as Coach from Gumball 😅 Edit: Also! Do you depict all of your family as dinos from the late Cretaceous period? I remember your brother being a Therizinosaurus from some old art on DA. Do you have a Dino picked out for all of your fam?

lopoddity

I got the naruto and furry milfs autism 😔😭

boreanSlumber

LOOOL and then ur like “now how do i explain that this is better actually”

Dean

me when I get the media analysis autism and not the One Billion Dollar per hour career autism

lopoddity

Nah, I assign animals to people based off vibes, my family wouldn't be limited to dinosaurs. I drew my brother as one to match my dinosona, I think nowadays I'd probably draw him as a giraffe (because he's tall, and also he runs in seeming slow motion like one). My mom is a t-rex because she always seemed big and scary to me growing up (not a good thing, haha). My dad would just be an empty space 😀

Veronica Toon

I like your mom, she seems supportive yet blunt. Edit: Yeah my math skills suck too, I don't know how the frick I passed Calculus in college.

lopoddity

I think maybe she's been watching young sheldon or something, idk why she thought autistic= super genius= should have billion dollar career. My brain wasn't made for medicine, it was made for painting rocks and eating the exact same meal every day

Gleeman and Artist

Every time I have a conversation with my mom I think "that went better than I expected too" so I know that feeling

Royce and Royce

All things considered this is a pretty heartwarming reaction!!

lopoddity

I know exactly how I passed Physics in college. >:3 I was dogshit at it, but everyone else in the class was also dogshit, so the professor would grade exams on a curve. Something something a rising tide lifts all boats

ErrorVittra

I imagine my mom as a t-rex too!

pookaWOODS

This is the most parenting to ever parent.

gamigami

leave it to a mom to ask "what does that mean" after telling them you have autism 😭 im glad it went over relatively well for you!!

Calastor

I feel you bro ❤️😑 In college when I told my mom (a doctor) that I got myself an ADHD diagnosis after years of struggling and had been taking prescription Adderall she told me she'd have been less disappointed if I had told her I was doing cocaine

lopoddity

Damn, that's awful man. :( Did she ever come around?

Calastor

A couple years later we were driving back from my grandma's and Mom had found out from my aunt that our cousin had been taking Vyvanse and doing really well in school because of it and she and my Dad were like "wow, you guys should've tried that!" and my even-more-ADHD brother almost crashed the car he got so angry at their hypocrisy Both of them are doctors but neither of them has made any effort to understand neurodivergence and they seem to believe that if they acknowledge that my brother or I have any issues like anxiety, depression, ADHD, or autism that it's a failing of theirs so instead they insist we're just being dramatic and seeking attention so it's been a lot of "Why are you going to therapy?" "I have anxiety and depression..." "No you don't." We're both in our mid thirties now so they give us a little more credence but every time we mention our neurodivergences they're like "Why have you never brought this up before?" 😑

lopoddity

Tbf my mother is a baby boomer, and ASD is more or less a modern diagnosis. The funny part was when she said "You've always been...." and trailed off. I wonder if she was thinking about all the unfavorable ways she's heard autistic people described. I've "always been" what? Odd? Different? Weird? She just kinda gestured vaguely with her hands, then switched to calling me smart. Which is a lot better than things she's called me in the past, let me tell you. It's nice she's trying to be more sensitive about the topic now. She then ended the talk by saying I could go off my antidepressants if I would just go to church with her sometimes, sigh

ummhallelujah

My mom is WHERE I got my autism from. Every time I discuss any of my autistic traits, she's like "oh but that's normal, I do that"... Think she's starting to recognize it though.

Robo87

I’ve considered getting tested but honestly…I don’t know. My family is barely understanding of my c-ptsd and “everyone is throwing labels on everything now a days. Everyone has to be something now just to fit in”, left me discouraged. I’m most definitely neurodivergent and for years now I’ve waffled with the idea that I might be on the spectrum (holy Moses can I relate to a lot of people sharing their stories) but idk I have a weird block about it. If I ever do get the testing I probably won’t say anything to my family about it and just have it for my peace of mind. I’m happy your mother seems to be at least accepting of it and trying to be supportive :) Random but I’ve always pictured my mother’s furry form as a very very short brown bear. My dad a puff of smoke quickly vanishing in the night XD 🤣

Strixcaliber

aww Im glad your mom was for the most part understanding! I remember when I got diagnosed with ADHD as a kid my mom ended up getting diagnosed at the same time bc I think she saw similarities in symptoms lol. She's definitely where I get it from, but I also suspect my dad has it too. This post kinda reminds me of my typical interactions with my dad lol

lopoddity

It's funny, my mom is a very religious social conservative, but her reactions are never what I predict they're gonna be. Me, 10 years ago: Mom I'm gay. Mom: Ok i guess 👍 Me, yesterday: Mom I'm autistic. Mom: Ok yeah that sounds right 👍 Me: Mom I've been thinking of maybe getting a master's in fine art so i can become a professor and increase my teaching salary Mom: I'LL SEE YOU BURN IN HELL BEFORE I SEE YOU TAKE OUT MORE STUDENT LOANS FOR AN ART DEGREE 😡😡😡

gamigami

i'm glad she's making some efforts to be nice, even if she still has her moments of baby boomerness. maybe if i give my mom another 10 years she'll be similar lol. she just goes "not everything needs a label!" and "so what if you're autistic. what does that change? what am i supposed to do about it no point in bringing it up" type of stuff, and then will continuously complain about my autistic behavior and say im "so weird" and "you're just being so... YOU" "why are you like this?" like mom... i told you why im like this lol. in fact i made a 10+ page document including testimonies from my friends of 10+ years about why i had autism and somehow she is still in denial or something. however she ALSO isnt in denial because she will acknowledge my behavior and accommodate it to a certain extent. for example my vocal stims are so frequent that she calls them "gami noises" when explaining them to other people. and she is aware of my specific dish preferences so she'll avoid using those dishes because it might make me upset... stuff like that. pick a side pls LMAO i think even if i got a professional diagnosis she would deny it :P but we have a pretty good relationship otherwise

Strixcaliber

LOL sounds just like my dad too XD at least in recent years. He used to be pretty homophobic and unintentionally abelist in my youth (Which in turn impacted my self esteem). I do genuinely think he was trying his best, but ultimately fell back on what he was taught in his own upbringing because of marriage and work stress. Nowadays he's more disappointed I haven't pursued jobs for my graphic design degree than he is for me being queer and neurodivergent (he even treats my girlfriend like family! Something I never expected out of him)

Strixcaliber

Oh wait I worded that last bit a little weird. My dad no longer cares about me being queer and pretty much accepts my quirks as a part of me and has come around from a lot of his bigoted views (other than saying some out of pocket crap that I try to challenge him on when Im around). I think its cause he realized how it was impacting my mental health at the time, his family didnt believe in mental health and discouraged therapy. I dont think he really understood how I was feeling till I went to the psych ward as a teen

PrincessMuffinArt

This is kind of similar to my bio dad but opposite because to HIM I think he perceives autism/adhd as “something wrong” so he gets all denial about it. He JUST found out i had it last year and got all uppity when I pointed out his newest youngest daughter shows signs of neurodivergence (stims a lot, can’t sit still, misses a lot of social cues). Immediately went “nothing wrong with her! And nothings wrong with you too”. I never said “autism = bad”, idiot. :/ At least my mom took the time to research and get me therapy and halted my high school spirialing and got me to accept me.. for me! And I learned more about myself and why I ‘m different and thats okay! (Fun fact, my stepdad… is 50/50 about it. While he’s aware of it, he really loves getting annoyed when i get overstimmed. Which means me turning down the volume in the house.) (Edit: i’m so sorry if i turned this into a half vent. Oops!)

PrincessMuffinArt

That last part got me, because my mom is (slowly) thinking that way too. Ever since she started going to church more often, she keeps thinking that community will help me too. (No mom, simply praying won’t “help” me when I’m panicking about being stuck in a cycle) I’m not religious like that and even though she claims she isn’t either, she does try to guilt me into thinking “you’ll make friends if you go”. I am bi and autistic and rambles nonstop about nintendo and my ocs… those type of people aren’t there, mom. 😔

D

This is probably the most autistic way to draw this interaction btw

D

Also the mom sweats on the trex are taking me out this rocks

D

Dinosaurs. They both got the neurodivergent arms. In general processing this w dinosaurs

lopoddity

Ha! As I was drawing this I was thinking Iggy got the "dino hands" from mama

SleepyTimeBee

I was wondering about something? You say your people skills are bad, and autism is generally correlated with "low social skills." However, in your writing, you show tremendous insight in the human psyche and nuanced understanding of a variety of social contexts. Your art and life show you feel a great deal, and express it. Is my understanding of autism just outdated?

gamigami

i know im not Lop but im autistic and have been writing literally all my life so ill reply with my personal experience for a bit of insight :> it may vary from others of course! being autistic is a lifelong battle of trying to read the signals. dissecting them. understanding them. making connections in people's behavior. however we are not good at doing that in the moment, it just doesnt come NATURALLY. and often times we dont even realize there are signals or subtext at all. writing is an unnatural circumstance. we are in control of everything, we know everything that is going on with each and every character, why they act the way that they do. autism is nothing if not desperately trying to understand WHY people act the way they do, and HOW they do it. and we dont typically know that in real life social situations. there is no way to completely know a person no matter what, as a lot of people don't even fully know themselves. we don't always KNOW people's intentions, what they REALLY mean, if theyre inferring something, ect, and we have to guess, even on the most "basic" levels... for example the way somebody looks at someone else, a small hand gesture, a sigh-- these and more can all easily be lost on us, we often dont even register it. ive been met with a lot of "he obviously meant ABC even though he said XYZ!" in my life lol. although my hypervigilance does keep me more alert than others, for example where i excel in reading specific social cues due to my paranoid nature, my autistic partner has a lot go completely over their head and i have to explain a lot of things to them lol. writing lets us skip aaaaaaaaall of that. because we know our characters more than anyone. ive been writing for a long time and this is partially why. its a fun puzzle to figure out why characters do the things they do, and to make it make sense. the solid written word is damning and absolute. even if i am excellent at executing relationships and connections and how people behave on paper, hardly ever can i reflect this in real life lol. hope this helps!

Kiara Koné

Hey quick question: is there a reason why maples dress couldn’t have been white? I’m not sure I understand that

lopoddity

Maple's dress could've absolutely been white. However, her mother "helped" her pick it out. White bridal dresses typical signify virginity, and Maple's mother, being a purity culture enforcing, subtle slut shaming, internalized misogyny perpetuating toxic nega bitch, is implying that Maple wearing a white dress would be a lie, as Maple is not a virgin. There's nothing actually preventing Maple from wearing a white dress, outside of um. Shame

Kiara Koné

Oh my…well THATS really fucking sad

Scyllarus

Crawling on to basically agree with Gamigami. I'm on the spectrum *and* I work in mental health. I routinely do therapy with people, and I'm good at it. However, that's because I can control the whole environment. I have a specific "mask" I use for my work that seems very natural. I have a fascination with the psyche, too, so I have actively tried to learn about it. And honestly, it's still very draining for me to use these hard-earned skills, so when I'm off the clock? It's all out the window, baby~ Tbh it kinda feels like "when ace folk write sex scenes." Someone who is allosexual kinda just...gets it? So they're not forced to think deeply about "why is this so hot?" - it just is. And in a paralleling way, if you don't natively "get" people but you want to? You think about people and interactions very hard.

SleepyTimeBee

Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply to me! I guess I still don't get it though? Lopoddity shows more insight into the social world then most neurotypicals I know can even begin to articulate. But I appreciate your metaphor about ace versus allo, that's a helpful way to think about it.

SleepyTimeBee

I guess now I wonder if maybe I should get tested lol! I've used Lopoddity's writing to navigate and understand the social world lol, and it's worked really well for me - her stories about understanding who you are, and how to make friends and talk to people who won't hate you, has super helped me.

Cerulean

Hiii Lop! I'm finally back again! Been dealing with a lot and really missed your art! I was diagnosed with ADHD and Bi Polar type 2 a few years ago and told my mom; she handled it okay, but I can't tell my dad. He doesn't believe in mental health, counseling, antidepressants.. the list goes on.

lopoddity

Nice to have you back! 🩷 And sorry to hear that. My mother doesn't believe some of my diagnoses are real and that I just need to pray to Jesus to fix it all. The funny thing is, going on medication helped me stop caring about outside opinions like that. Nobody has lived your life. Nobody knows you better than you. Whether or not someone "believes" in your diagnosis is irrelevant, you must always do what works for you. :)
