It’s been asked before why Felix (an adulterous closeted gay man) and Liv stayed married, or why Felix even ensnared her into a marriage in the first place. The reason is simple. Felix, having lost his own mother to suicide at a young age, wanted a mother figure to care for him and manage him and, most importantly, never ever leave him. And Liv…well, she did consider escaping, once Felix made it clear he wasn’t the romantic artist she thought he was, and instead a bitter, self-loathing masochist. Somehow though, Felix convinced her to stay. And she instead came to view her dearly beloved as her own personal project. Her’s to manage, her’s to bully into producing more plays and novels to keep them comfortably wealthy, her’s to keep upright when he’d come home too sloshed to stay standing. Liv did enjoy having so much control over the man she’d come to despise, and Felix savored her evolution from meek, doting housewife to cruel, biting overseer.

Liv and Felix didn’t love each another, but they did understand each other, and dug their claws deep into one another out of need and loneliness and a desire to be seen at their ugliest without being pushed away.

this is the kind of codependency they warn you about in psychopathology

How exactly does Felix die? How old was Perry?

lopoddity

Felix overdosed on opiates and alcohol in his fifties. Liv found him in his study, and felt little besides an odd feeling that this was always going to be how it ended. Perry was a pre-teen, and seeing how his father had always felt like a stranger even when sitting at the dinner table, had no idea how to properly grieve the man. I like to think Perry starts wondering about the kind of person his father was when he hits adulthood, and asks Liv. In exchanging their feelings of frustration and loss and aimlessness, perhaps he and his mother bond, just a little.

I both feel like they are really terrible people and pretty inexcusable but also feel so viscerally bad for both of them. Like in another world where they were better people/at least tried to be, they were supposed to be best friends.

Gleeman and Artist

Yeahhhh when you have codependcy issues like these two, it's really hard to pull yourself away no matter how hard you want too.

Calypso

Do I see a little bit of Crowley inspo in that last panel? 👀

Lourenzo Dasilva

I guess the first drawing is from before Liv was consumed by her own bitterness. Cause she's being nice to Perry

Liv did TRY to be a decent mother in the beginning. At the very least, she felt somewhat guilty about bringing an innocent child into Felix's (and her own) dysfunction.

Perry: You were gone for 3 whole days, daddy! Where were you? Felix, horking a hairball into his coffee: Ehh being completely honest with you ducky, I'm not entirely sure where I am right now

TheTabbyBadger

dang poor Liv, almost makes you wonder how it would have gone if she had left when Perry was young. Alas their codependency makes sense. I'm glad Perry seems like he was kind of sheltered from it all just by virtue of his dad being so distant, but I guess that's a whole different kind of pain. Glad to hear he at his mom were able to do some genuine bonding about it, even if it was just a little bit

as unpleasant as this dynamic is, i think its one of my fav in the ensemble. Im a huuuuge fan of exploring codependant dynamics and just showing off human fragility. Not everyone rises above their vices and sometimes shitty people are made in each other and thrive in the misery they build together. I find that dynamic endlessly fascinating, especially for Liv who had deal with the emotional fragility of this man and seeing him just- destroy the golden image she had of him to see the REAL him. i wonder if at first Liv was cowed by the emotional pressure of being his 'everything' his lifeline, how he refuses to let go and be stable on his own, putting the responsibility of his mental health on her. Its very easy to imagine how suffocating that would have been at first, and then over time Liv's sympathy just, erodes away. So now when he's on his knees, clinging to her and sobbing about needing her to stay, she doesn't feel that pang anymore, just that feeling of 'what HAPPENED to you'. Its kinda sad how the closet thing to an emotionally intimate moment for them is instances like this, and it both brings down the walls and hardens them. Did Felix ever have the 'morning after' regret of being so 'pathetic' in front of Liv but never really stopped? How would Liv handle his 'emotional outbursts'. Is Perry even aware of the nuance in his parents relo?

Im glad its not just me NJFNEF

When someone wanting to be controlled meets someone who grows to love doing the controlling….its a toxic and intoxicating sort of dynamic

Lop, I am rather curious: I just recently started watching Shameless, and I noticed that Felix really reminds me of Frank(minus the closeted gayness, or course) Was he at all inspired by Frank, by any chance?

lopoddity

Nah, I've never heard of that character or show. :3 His design and bri'ishness are inspired by Crowley from Good Omens though.

Scorp

It’s nice that Perry and Tibbs grew up to become good parents, despite both having shitty fathers. Perry may fall asleep on the floor, but not because of excessive drinking, only because he’s a big silly (also bby Perry is so cute it hurts my heart)

Artsy.Spectra

is Liv pregnant while he's begging her not to leave? It's hard to tell by the hugging tbf but it does look like she's in her second trimester...

Artsy.Spectra

I'm surprised you haven't, shameless touches on dysfunctional families much like you do, but more breaking bad about it

lopoddity

Nah, his arms are just pushing the fabric of her nightgown back, which makes her stomavh look more prominent. Liv was already starting to have doubts about their relationship when she (accidentally) got pregnant with Perry, but she was also easier to soothe back then, so Felix steadied her concerns by buying a big ass manor for their "blossoming family" to live in. In the crying drawing, Perry is maybe 5 or 6 years old, and Liv has just suggested that the two of them consider a seperation (implying an eventual divorce). Felix breaks down and begs her not to leave, as she and Perry are the only constants in his life, and he'd truly rather die than live in that big empty house, alone except for his own misery. So Liv decides to hold out a little longer, for their marriage, for Perry. She tries to convince herself Felix's outburst was out of love, but really, she stays out of pity.

LionPrideProductions

Honestly, I think a sort of shamless setting for this universe would be perfect. The more I watch it, and the more I look at Lop's art, the more I imagine the characters in that type of semi realistic atmosphere. could be really good for like a webtoon, honestly

D

Are your hands tired from drawing all the little blobby spots on them. Because good lord there’s a lot of patterns here 😭 I just got done with an art session where my animal character was covered in little dots but that one was character. Here you’ve drawn seven

Syd D.

as the child of two addicts & alcoholics, I feel this and Felix&Liv's dynamic hard. well written, and bravo making them so likeable but so euuurrrgh all at once.

Lammergayier

Oh my god lookit little baby Perry. My heart 😭 Question, I remember you mentioning Wayyyy back when that Liv is actually bisexual/not straight, but isn't consciously aware of this fact. Is that still canon? And if so, Does she ever become aware of it?
