Meet Edna, a rather malevolent old lady who never fails to darken the day of any and everyone she comes across, including her own daughter, Liv. Some would say Edna even delights in it, and they are correct. Edna would steal candy from a baby. Rotten brat had it coming, Edna can’t be held liable for what happens when her blood sugar gets low. She’s used that more than once as a legal defense.

Edna has exactly one soft spot, and it will always be her purrfect, precious grandbaby who can do no wrong, Perry.

I’m curious, if Edna is such a rotten person, what does Perry like about her? Does he see the parallels between her and Liv and just doesn’t care, or is he blind to it?

Not only is Edna an absolute kitten with Perry, she’s even willing to be kind (well, civil), to others at his request. Perry loves his grandma because she spoils him with stories and homemade pastries and crusty old hard candies from her purse, and honestly, as Perry’s parents are both assholes, he can’t really afford to be too critical of his beloved bubbe. He writes off a lot of her unpleasantness as wacky old lady quirks, and doesn’t ever take her too seriously.

Perry having a semi-good relationship with one or two of his family members is nice too see. Did Liv ever feel a certain way when Edna and Perry had a good relationship?,like "You're capable of showing care and love to someone,but you chose not to give me a crumb of it my entire life".

I don't know why, but her breaking out of the nursing home reminded me of that story of a 90-year-old woman who climbed over a 2m tall metal gate in 27 seconds XD Did Edna and Felix have much of a relationship? How would Tibbs think of Edna? Is Edna not caring about Perry being trans because she genuinely loves him for who he is or more she sees it as some kind of rebellious nature?

This gives Liv’s frigid bitterness towards Perry such a crazy new dynamic. I’m enthralled, literally living for it. For real though, it must feel so terrible to watch a mother who showed nothing but cold hatred towards you show unconditional complete delight in your child. No wonder Liv turned into her mother. It’s horrible, but it’s intellectually sufficient. That being said, I’m very curious why Edna is enamored with Perry, when she finds the rest of society to be as respectable as rotting trash. Is there a story behind this?

id imagine it has to do with only having to deal with young children in small doses and being able to pawn them off on their parents instead of being personally responsible for them 100% of the time. you get to be the fun one with none of the consequences of being indulgent

Yep! Liv is both furious to learn that apparently Edna has had the capacity to be motherly the whole time, and also a little jealous of Perry when she sees him snuggled in Edna's arms. A lesser woman might start resenting her own child....

It's a pretty common phenomenon for people to be much more indulgent/loving with their grandchildren than they were with their own children. Edna adores Perry because 1.) he's cute, and 2.) he doesn't require all the tedious work of actual parenting. Edna doesn't have to be a responsible authority figure to Perry, AND she can hand him back whenever he gets too annoying. It's all the fun of spending time with a kid, with none of the responsibility! Also she genuinely likes Perry's scrappy, earnest nature, she respects it a lot more than she does Liv, a former people-pleasing pushover that became a controlling bully. And did I mention Perry is cute?

Nah, Edna has a low-pitched, husky voice, like the many old lady characters in Bob’s Burgers. Which is funny cuz Bob and Linda are more or less what I figure Tibbs and Perry's voices would sound like (with H. Jon Benjamin/Bob as Tibbs, and John Roberts/Linda as Perry)

I'm not sure if Edna lives long enough to meet her great-grandkids, we'll see. Tibbs is part of Perry's circle, so Edna is forced to play nice with him. I imagine she starts off begrudgingly civil, then over time decides Tibbs isn't so bad on the eyes and proceeds to creep on him crazy-style
