Doe! A deer! A female deer~

well of course these two chumps made it into Fuzzbutts. for all my frustrations with Moondancer, i'm still attached to his twerpy twinky self. Although in this story he's no longer a serial killer, he remains- quite dutifully- a huge bitch. Meet Lune and Victoria.

Lune (pronounced "loon". Male, Red Deer). Lune is a professional ballet dancer that has become the indie darling of local theatre. While it is indeed a glamorous, deeply fulfilling career, it doesn't pay beans, so he and his sister share a room at Penny's boarding house. Lune has something of a love/hate relationship with dear Pendleton. As fellow theatre people, their natural instinct is both be catty and competitive at each other, while occasionally having an impromptu sing-off of Skimbleshanks The Railway Cat. Lune likes to think of himself as above Penny's childish antics, yet often ends up roped into her shenanigans. He does maintain that she is a terrible landlord, though he has a much more amicable relationship with Cupcake.

Lune has a rare genetic pattern called leucism, giving him that white pelt. He's pretty and he knows it, quite enjoying the attention he gets from ballet fans and admirers alike......except when said attention comes from Logan. Urgh.

Victoria (Female, Red Deer) Mostly goes by "V", please don't call her Vicky. Lune's headstrong younger sister. Victoria is a kind, confident doe with a strong sense of justice. Her studies thus far have focused on social issues, and she hopes to go into local politics someday. For now though, she's content designing costumes for Lune and his various theater productions, as well as painting sets, crafting marionettes, and hosting puppet shows for children. Victoria is a deeply creative, passionate person, and Lune wishes he could provide her with more than community college, a dingy local theater, and a cramped room in a shabby boarding house. Guilty and concerned, he often urges her to return home, back to their parents, but Victoria insists she's having fun, and that there's nowhere else she's rather be.

Lune and Victoria are both estranged from their family for reasons unknown. Lune is overprotective of his little sister and often lacks faith in her abilities, which pisses Victoria right off. The siblings are known to butt heads quite literally. Fortunately, Victoria is the only person Lune can manage an apology for, and Victoria will accept it with a sigh. Because she loves her brother, even if he is a huge bitch.

Like Lune, Victoria also has an unusual genetic pattern. She's piebald, resulting in those white splotches. The two siblings certainly stick out in a herd of red deer.

more notes:

-Although Victoria did not study ballet to the degree Lune did, she's a pretty skilled, graceful dancer in her own right. The two siblings sometimes dance together whenever Penny insists on hosting a talent night.

-Both sibs frequently forget to eat, mostly because they both suck at cooking. Cupcake is forever sniffing both of them out and intimidating one or the other into eating a meal she made, be it oatmeal and berries or dandelion salad or strawberry cake (that last one actually gets both sibs stampeding into the kitchen, forks at the ready).

-Victoria is a disaster lesbian, Lune uses no particular label, but will accept "queer"

-Victoria has a very prominent stammer when she gets nervous. It's common for herbivores like deer, who are known for their "freeze" instinct in response to perceived danger. Lune will gore anyone that makes fun or tries to rush her to spit the words out.

As fascinating as it is to see you build your own world from the ground up and repurpose your mlp OCS, are there gonna be some that you might not repurpose at all? For example, is there gonna be a character that stays a pony (not a unicorn or pegasus) with their attached attributes and personality, if they cut at all.

AAAA VICTORIA IS MY NEW FAVE! They are both beautiful and amazing! I wonder what Loony’s new story will be compared to his Mlp counterpart? I am also curious about the overall story? Is Penny the MC this time or Bruce? Aaa- I’m so excited for more!

Ehhhh well, the thing about the pony designs is they're too colorful. I thought about having Peachy Keen stay a horse, a regular chestnut horse, but I ran into a problem with her hooves. With Lune and Victoria, an irl deer's hooves are easy enough to draw as functional anthro "hands" without them looking too uncanny or awkward. But a horse? Deer have two "toes", while a horse only has one. It's hard to turn that single hoof into a functional hand without it no longer resembling a hoof. I might actually avoid having any anthro horses for this reason. :/

Oh my gosh they're both so PRETTY! I mean I know they know they're pretty, but STILL I wonder if for their massive strawberry sweet tooths if they ever try to convince Bruce to grow a strawberry vine on the roof garden (translation: annoying the shit out of Bruce to please please pretty please grow a strawberry vine plant and we'll stop)

I really like ensemble-type stories where there isn't really a main character per say, just a bunch of stories featuring different characters that may or may not weave into a bigger arching narrative. :) Shows like Hey Arnold and MLP:FiM did those sort of stories wonderfully. So that's what Fuzzbutts will do, there is no single protagonist, we just get to look in on an odd cast of animal characters going about their lives (with occasional insight into their backstories). Like the slice-of-life stuff I was doing with my nextgen characters.

If you’re keen a listen, I have a few ideas that might smooth over that problem. In Piemations episode ‘Boomerang to a Gun fight’, a world is almost entirely comprised of equines with a few others. A barkeep was shown sweeping the floor with an apparatus that help them hold the broom, Mayor Joy and others are commonly shown holding things with their mouths and finding a way to hold paper and other objects with their hooves (it’s even hinted as Sean tries to catch the gun Joy throws him) there are numerous other small details if you watch the episode. It’s cute and funny.

PrincessMuffinArt

Ooohhh! I love stories like that! :) Keep up all your amazing work! You’re a big insp for how I write stories!

I love how Lune looks a little fantasy but not so unbelievably for the world! I saw the comment about Peachy and the hoof dilemma. Perhaps you could model the hooves slight after prehistoric horses and just give her a thumb piece or even break it into the 3-4 hoof sections? Or sometimes horses can have nubby hoof bits grown on the back of their ankles/ergot (TIL a new word) that you might work into a thumb?

Luke

Sooo beautiful. Maybe their parents didn't appreciate their dancing?

lopoddity

Yeah nah, I tried. :/ It just looks uncanny and alien. I rewatched Zootopia recently, and I noticed there are no prominent ungulate (one-hoofed) characters. I like to think Disney avoided using horses for the same reason as me. Whenever they do use a hoofed animal, it’s one with two or more “toes” that translates well into an anthro hand. Sheep, antelopes, that water buffalo, etc. I think the only hoofed creature that don’t get dextrous hands are the elephant characters, which is why you see them using their trunks as hands instead. I did a long look-through down lots of furry media, and jt seems when it comes to anthro horses, designers either opt to give then straight up human hands (like Bojack Horseman), or give them hooves and hope for the best (in gen 2 MLP, characters “grab” stuff with their hooves and it’s weeeeiiiird)

*whispers* omg they're so pretty -Despite not having the best luck in her own love life, Victoria is a hopeless romantic and gets emotionally vested in romance stories....including real life ones like Bruce and Sunny, and Penny and Cupcake. She's the first to know the dish on new developments like Sunny being seen sneaking out of Bruce's room early after a bad storm the night before, Or how Penny tried to give Cupcake a beautiful bouquet of flowers but accidentally mixed it up with her clown set that shoots ink out on an unsuspecting victim. Vee doesn't spread vicious rumors or gossip or anything like that, it's just that she's genuinely involved and excited like a nosey little sister in her friends' lives....maybe someday she'll find her own special person to have her own adventure with. Very close friends with Priscilla and they have weekly dress up/gossip girl visits

lopoddity

Lune tries to act like he's so above the gossip but always has both ears pricked when his sister gushes about the latest development

FloweryFruitFangs

I love these designs, especially Lune's. He's so pretty! Honestly I'm just happy he's pursuing his passions instead of shoving them aside like Moondancer did. Originally in this comment I suggested the prehistoric psuedo-hoof thing but my brain must've glossed over you mentioning that you already tried that, whoops. I guess it would be kinda cool to see horses as one of the feral animals in your universe then maybe?

feathermaws

Ahh, yeah understand! I suppose that without the single part hoof it would kinda take away from the horse part. Maybe she could be a cow?

Melody Williamson

I noticed you've put shapes next to all the characters. Do they have any meaning?

lopoddity

Shape language is an important aspect of character design. :) Each character's body was designed with a particular shape (or multiple) in mind. Cupcake's design consists of many circles, which hopefully help her like round and cuddly. Penny's design is made of many triangles, which help her look sharp and impish. Each character's main shape is drawn represented right next to them.
