Meet Sebastian and Carmella Sweet. They're a married pair of sugar gliders, and also Cupcake's parents!

it's late so have some quickie notes

-best friends since childhood, married as soon as they were legally able. Remain stupidly in love to this day and have a million pet names for each other.

-Legendary acrobats and ringmasters of a successful circus.  As sugar gliders they both possess a gliding membrane and prehensile tails. Carmella has a marsupial pouch in which she keeps performance props and also snacks.

-Pretty busy with their careers until they hit their mid-thirties and remembered oh cripes, we oughta have some kids (small mammals tend to have big, BIG families). Unfortunately struggled to conceive. Undeterred, they decided to go adopt a couple of teeny babies to drown in their particular brand of loud, syrupy-sweet affection

-This plan went out the window when they were taken on a tour through the orphanage and spotted a young bear cub sitting in the corner away from the other children, playing by herself. The adoption agent brushed over the cub, trying to herd Carmella and Sebastian into the small mammals wing, but the Sweets just couldn't help their curiosity

They ask the cub if she'd like to play with them. The bear hesitates before perking up a little, grabbing her ball- but they're not five minutes into a game when a careless swat of the cub's paw sends Sebastian flying, injuring him. The cub runs over to help, reaching out with her giant clawed paws- and Sebastian and Carmella both instinctively flinch.

That's enough to get the cub lurching backward- but looking down at the tiny couple she hurt- the latest in a long list of others she'd hurt- she fists her paws to her face and begins to bawl, blubbering apologies, desperately trying to scramble back to the safety of her corner.

Well, the Sweets aren't going to stand for this. With the same fearlessness they apply to their death-defying circus routines, they scramble up the bear to rub at her shoulders and pet her cheeks. It was just an accident, everything's alright. Sebastian boasts that her little swat was nothing compared to a scuffle he once got into with a one-eyed bandit cat, and asks if the little bear would like to hear the story. The distraction succeeds in stopping the tears, and the cub curls up and listens, spellbound, occasionally giggling, while Carmella gently corrects her husband's theatrical exaggerations ("No dear, he didn't actually swallow you, remember? I stabbed him with a sewing needle before he could gulp you down proper-")

The adoption agent clears their throat, trying to get the tour moving again. There are other children to meet, he reminds the Sweets. So the Sweets bid a reluctant farewell to the bear cub and move along.

They're allllllmost out of the room when Carmella gives one last look over her shoulder- and sees the cub slumping back down in her corner, hugging her knees. In an instant Carmella has scurried back across the room and has flung herself at the bear. Carmella doesn't need to see any other babies. She wants this one.

The adoption agent sputters, reminding of the far more appropriate children available- smaller, easier to manage children- he brings up the utter insanity of two creatures weighing less than a pound each attempting to raise one of the largest land carnivores on the planet. From their perch on Cupcake's shoulders, the Sweets level a flat look at the agent- before Sebastian folds his arms and says now see here, whatever his wife wants, she gets, and that's all there is to that.

-It actually was insane- suicidal, even- for two tiny sugar gliders to attempt raising a grizzly bear. Despite her best efforts, Cupcake broke a lot of furniture- it was necessary for the Sweets to expand their small home hundreds of times over to properly accommodate the growing bear. Even making her lunch every day was an exhausting ordeal, with each sandwich being larger than the Sweet's own bed. But eventually, everyone adjusts. With tutoring and diligent practice, Cupcake learns to be control her immense strength, and as an adult she can scoop and handle her parents with no fear. The Sweets fuss over their daughter an awful lot, and although Cupcake may grumble and growl, she secretly loves it. She knows she lucked out with her parents, and she loves them more than anything else in the world.

-The Sweets ended up having a surprise pregnancy a couple years after adopting Cupcake, bearing a set of twin joeys. Cupcake will kill you if you look at her little sibbies wrong.

-Cupcake's real name (the one given to her by her adoptive parents) is Charlotte Sweet. "Cupcake" is a pet name that stuck. Her birth name was Gertrude Bruin, which she abandoned with little fanfare. There is no information available on the whereabouts of Cupcake's birth parents, but she finds she doesn't care.

Oh goD my heart is melting !! Size difference/ G/t stuff is so incredibly adorable, especially when it’s so loving like in the orphanage story. Ahhhhh i can’t take it

D

If there isn’t eventual art of them with their full grown daughter I will BE FORCED to draw my own

pookaWOODS

*FUCKING IMPLODES* These are wonderful!!!! Great job on their glider wings and incorporating wardrobes somehow.

PrincessMuffinArt

Awwwww! This story was so sweet! I love thier designs so much! I just love wholesome sappy couples and its cute!

Colbyr

*squints* ...bruin....you think you're clever don't you??? (Also I love this wjfjwkkrk) additionally. I would pay money to know how they get those shirts on if their glide membrane thing is attached to their backs... But then again, fuzzy talking magic animal world, weirder things have happened

TheTabbyBadger

Awww I love them! What a cute story and I love the designs! The tail hug is a nice touch T-T Also poor little Cupcake on her own before that, I’m glad they found her

Bigsmile

Now that is some adorable shit that I'm on board for all day! I actually looked up sugar gliders after reading this and holy crap are they teeny! Good to hear that they're really good and loving parents to a bear, I'm assuming adopting herbivores/predators when you're the other is frowned on in Fuzzbutts world?

SmilesPerHour

Maybe their clothing is split down the seams and connected by flexible magnets. That way, their clothing is held together by the magnetic pull through their flaps.

*the adoption agent walks over to an eager little white mouse* "I'm sorry Stuart, they chose someone else. But don't worry, some day we'll find a nice family of small mammals to adopt you." Seriously though, this is an adorable story! There's something so silly, and yet charming about a family that adopts and cares for a child that's larger than they are, and I'm so happy that Cuppy was adopted into such a kind and loving family. And the sugar gliders' designs are just too adorable! I love your Fuzzbutts universe more with every new addition, Lop. Well done :)

Wow, great idea! Much better than what I was thinking. I thought maybe their clothes indeed had slits for the gliding membranes, with a series of holes in the membrane allowing the front and back halves of the clothes to be secured. But that seems like it would cause tears and rips if the Sweets weren’t careful, so not the best option for circus performers. Magnets are much better. :)

Carmella Sweet....Grrrtrude Bruin....I like to think I’m kinda clever sometimes. >:3 Most of the characters will have animal pun names. Also, the Sweets have clip-on clothes. There’s a front half and a back half, which are held together by a tiny series of magnets. Their membrane runs down their inner arm to their outer ankle, then up their inner leg to their tail. Unless they feel like trying to cram all that fur and stretchy hide into an outfit, all their clothing is custom tailored to accommodate their “wingspan”.

SmilesPerHour

You're welcome! :) (I hope I'm not coming off as creepy with the compliments. I truly think this is a fun universe you're making, but I don't want to be a weirdo.)

Thank you! :) And yes, mixed adoptions are definitely frowned upon. A carnivore adopting a herbivore is seen as suspicious, and the prospective predator parent(s) may face unfair discrimination and additional screening. A herbivore adopting a carnivore is seen as less dangerous, but still suspicious. Carnivores feel that herbivores just want to deny the child their culture and may have a "savior" attitude in mind about taking in a poor little savage beast. Besides varying social opinion on the ethics of it, mixed adoptions can be dangerous for the herbivore (or omnivore, as the Sweets are) parent. Carnivore children play rough and have often not yet learned to control their strength or instincts. Cupcake struggled with this. In the beginning, the Sweets were unknowingly underfeeding her (tbf, they were giving her the recommended food intake, it's just that Cupcake was about to hit a growth spurt and was therefore ravenous most of the day), which led to her instincts getting sharper and harder to ignore. She didn't know why Sebastian and Carmella's quick darting movements fascinated her so much, and made her absently wonder if she could catch one in her claws. One night she sleep-walks into the kitchen and ends up ripping the sweets shelf right off the wall, because her brain brain went "sweets? honey? honeycomb? bee's nest maybe? TEAR IT OPEN". And so the Sweets awake to a frightful sound, and find the little bear in the kitchen splattered with jam and biscuit crumbs, sniffling miserably. Fortunately sugar gliders are no stranger to powerful sweets cravings, and had jam and biscuits with Cupcake until she'd calmed down. Later they took her to a bear specialist, and figured out a more filling, nutritious meal plan- and like that, Cupcake stopped having dreams about eating her parents, and started running home after school to help Mama in the kitchen.

Bigsmile

Oh damn, I didn't even think of the different instincts animals have, I can see why that would be a struggle. Still, good to see the Sweets figured out the problem and accounted for her bear instincts instead of doubling down and raising her as a huge sugar glider.

lopoddity

Oh, never. Your comments light up my day! :)

Okay I absouletly adore them abd I can't wait to see more of this family *slides you a whole dollar bill* not hinting at anything Though I'm glad you brought up the size difference. Like tiny anthro rodents in media give me low key anxiety. Like...seriously how do such tiny creatures get along safely in normal society? Take Zootopia. A mouse's car gets blown away, whole ass houses get knocked over, a RABBIT has to step very carefully to avoid hurting the teenies, and a shrew almost gets squashed by a donut. Like...okay I'm 6 feet tall, right? My level of vision is higher then most people so some times cat-sized animals or small children occasionally go accidentally flying because they've scampered into my majestic stride and I wasn't paying attention. So say I was a giraffe and a family of mice accidently gets in my path and I don't see them? Or a lion cub toddler gets the huntinh instincts and could a small rodent citizen be able to fight him off if the parents were distracted? Thanks for listening to my repressed worries over teeny anthro rodents lmao

SmilesPerHour

Aw thank you! And your art lights up MY day :)

I love this so much. Would it be cool if I drew some fanart and post it on da or somewhere else? (If do, please tell me where to post it) If not, that's okay too :)

Small animals make up a huge chunk of the population, meaning they have a lot of economic and voting power to aim at things like infrastructure to accommodate their size. Small animals tend to live in specialized “tiny living” districts, where they won’t be at risk of accidental harm from a larger citizen. Outside these districts society does still try to keep them safe. Small critters are almost never seen on the ground, as anybody could step on them. Instead there are millions of brightly colored suspended tubes (imagine hamster tubes) running alongside buildings and even underground, so small critters can zip about without worry. These are by no means perfect solutions, however, society at large seems to have been built for medium sized animals. Even Bruce and Priscilla complain sometimes about being small animals in a world too big for them.

RagingRiptide

How do lifespans work in this world? Does everyone have the same general lifespan?

KaeWolfe

OMG! So precious! I love size differences! Would totally love to see them together! Especially Cupcake and her teeny sibbies

lopoddity

I'm always honored to receive fanart. :)

lopoddity

The animal nerd in me wants to be like no, everyone's lifespan is analogous to their real life counterpart, but that's just be depressing. Cupcake's parents would be dead before she graduated high school.:/ So yeah! Everyone instead has a human-ish lifespan, although small creatures tend to live sliiiightly less long, while larger animals can live more than a century if they play their cards right (there's a couple tortoise senior citizens that claim to be 200 years old).

Doglover502

"The Sweets ended up pregnant a few years later, bearing a set of twin joeys" Peebs and Jammie? 👀
