Happy Thanksgiving everyone! As always, I'm thankful for your support. I hope you have a wonderful holiday (or just a wonderful Thursday, if you don't celebrate). :D

so i realized i was kinda getting ahead of myself with Lune and Genevieve. It's not proper to dive into character conflict without first establishing the setting- so lets explore Rangale, the mountainside all-deer religious commune that is deeeeefinitely not a cult.

Herd/pack animals tend to be polytheistic, believing in a whole wide pantheon of gods. Rangale is unique in that all members of the herd collectively worship just one god, the one true god....Hart, the heavenly stag. Followers of Hart believe that only devout deerfolk will be permitted to follow Hart into paradise. Nearly a century ago, Rangale was founded as a safe place to worship. The creation of an insular, isolated, all-deer community was most definitely not done in response to increasing integration between herbivores and carnivores....

Hart, also known as Father Hart, is an all-powerful, all-knowing god. He is said to have created the universe, and he is commonly depicted with a blazing sun cradled within his antlers, a symbol of his divinity. Hart is....not a nice god. Certainly not a god that loves you unconditionally....more of a jealous and vengeful god that will obliterate you and your entire family if you displease him. The church is fairly puritanical, urging followers to shed themselves of earthly tethers and be like Hart, the ultimate pure being. Followers that give in to sin are taught to fall to their knees and beg Hart for forgiveness, after which the church assigns them manual labor to perform as penance. (Conveniently, this provides the church a handy, constant source of free labor).

Hart is the ultimate leader and protector, and is always willing to guide a lost, pious soul. Though nonbelievers decry Hart and his teachings as cold and cruel, his followers view him more like a very stern father that only wants the very best for his children. Hart is associated with strength, truth, prophecy, wisdom, healing, light, and academia. He is curiously depicted as being untouched by mortal folly like lust, love, and laughter. Save for rut season (an annual period of heightened male aggression/interest in sex), all bucks in Rangale are encouraged to mirror Hart's stoicism in all aspects of life. Thus Lune can count on one hand all the times his father ever smiled at him, and keep in mind, Lune only has three fingers. :/

Rangale is strictly segregated by gender. Males pray to Hart, while females pray to Dunn.

Dunn, also known as Mother Dunn, or the Earth Mother, is not a god in her own right. She's more like a saint. Hart sometimes takes on a mortal form to check in on things on Earth, and Dunn is said to have been a mortal doe that fell in love with him. She loved Hart so deeply that she leapt in front of an arrow meant for him, fired by a heretic. Hart rewarded her sacrifice with eternal life, alongside a pair of shimmering wings. Now Dunn spends eternity with her celestial love, serving as his dutiful wife and helpmate. All girls in Rangale are taught to aspire to be like Mother Dunn- loyal, sweet, and self-sacrificing.

Dunn is the patron deity of music, art, fertility, harvest, hearth, marriage, forgiveness, and love. She is said to be the guardian of all does and fawns. As such, she's slowly becoming something like a folk hero in Rangale....as Dunn has no divine power like her almighty husband, she must rely on cleverness and friendships to escape trouble. As an alternative to reading their fawns (often dry ) scripture, mothers often invent fun, daring tales of brave Mother Dunn swooping in to rescue lost children and outsmart dastardly predators. These stories are not approved by the church and are considered sacrilege.

bonus tidbits:

-Hart, who knows and sees all, is always depicted with his eyes open. Dunn, who is naive and trusting, is typically shown with her eyes closed.

-As a child, Victoria once was caught putting marshmallows on the antler tips of her family's Hart shrine. Her mother locked her in a broom closet.

-Rangale is a sexist society, with very rigid gender roles. Only bucks are allowed leadership positions. Does are meant to be wives and mothers. Only very wealthy, very privileged lady deerfolk are able to learn skills outside of cleaning and childcare. Victoria, for example, was allowed to study fine art, as it was thought a sophisticated skill might boost her chances for marriage (her uneven piebald coat is considered unsightly).

-Rangale is also deeply homophobic and transphobic....really they're phobic of any deviation from the accepted norm. Conversion therapy is employed on young queer members, and if they insist on sinning, they are excommunicated from the church and shunned by their families. Rangale also shows deep contempt for predator/prey relationships, and teaches that predators are evil beasts that wrestle with the urge to devour prey alive and screaming.

-As the leader's son, Lune faced tremendous pressure growing up. This was made all the worse by his coincidental resemblance to Hart. All members of Rangale thought Lune was blessed from birth, and would usher them into a new age of purity and prosperity. Really though, Lune's white coat is just a random case of leucism, and his heart is as sinful as anybody else. To this day, Lune still struggles with the fear that Hart is watching and judging him.

-As an adult, some time after she and her brother escape Rangale, Victoria sculpts a beautiful effigy of Hart, then smashes its head off with a baseball bat. She and Lune eventually find comfort in praying to Dunn, who forgives all sin and loves unconditionally.

hope you'll reveal more about rangale n lune n vic's parents in the future!

AsTheJayFlies

I wonder how much the leaders (like the grand stag, council of elders and the clergy) actually believe in their religion. i’m sure the original founders were well aware they were spinning bullshit to control their followers, but what about the future generations? the privileged young bucks who grew up with looser leashes? How many of them are disillusioned with hart as a god but go along with things because they enjoy their status? or is the indoctrination too strong? i grew up going to church but i never really believed in god

Imogen

mmmm i love this lore dump, as icky as Rangale is its got beautiful lore especially these designs wowie wow

D

GOD TJIS LORE IS FUCKIN COOL

D

nerding out rn. This also rings eerily familiar to my upbringing, and it’s weirdly cathartic to see it depicted in another, but similarly structured way

Yvette Winters

did the cult try to set him up with the closest resemblance to the saint that they had or was there another reason he was set up with Genevieve in particular? Also gotta say, I love the fact that the males just so happen to get wiggle room for THEIR seasonal wackiness but I doubt the women get nearly as much leeway.

Bigsmile

I play and run DnD so pantheon lore dumps are my jam. I'm curious, are Hart and Dunn worshipped by non cultists? And is Dunn perhaps interpreted differently by the general public? Like instead of the naive and servitude sexist angle, does the general public just look at her as kind and loving without being subservient?

Calastor

What an EXCELLENT lore dump =D every time a post comes with a huge wall of text I get SO EXCITED How does the cult view other prey animals? Is there an effort to "show them the light" or are they viewed as soul less/damned simply for not being deer? What kind of paradise do they believe they'll enjoy in the afterlife? Is there a hell? This is tremendously interesting ♥️

ApofisNecros

Frightening how this could very easily be a real world cult/religion.

PrincessMuffinArt

Ahaha Rangale feels scary. It sounds nightmarish! (Which is telling of your really good storytelling! You captured the unsettling nature of this area really well!)

TheTabbyBadger

Ahhh they’re both so pretty but I love Dunn so much 😭 Very interesting world-building, I’m excited to see more :D Do creatures outside of Rangale know about/worship Hart and Dunn/were they existing deities before or did they create their own religion?

lopoddity

Ahaha do you really? XD I always worry I'm rambling too much, so that's super reassuring to hear. <) Rangale views other prey animals as like....inherently lesser beings, but through no fault of their own. Hart is perfect, and he created deer in his own image, the people of Rangale are his children. Non-deerfolk can't help how they were born. Though Rangale views Hart as the one TRUE god, they're not opposed to other prey animals having their own beliefs and deities. Rangale members believe that non-deer can indeed find peace and enlightenment and even enjoy a pleasant afterlife when they die, though this afterlife pales in comparison to the splendor of Hart's paradise. Rangale isn't too keen on non-deer participating in their religion, they maintain exclusionary, supremacist beliefs. If you're a lost, wayward deer, Rangale welcomes you with open arms! If you're a bunny, kindly get lost, Rangale doesn't want you, go pray to your silly pantheon of a hundred different bunny gods. Rangale doesn't claim that other religions are false per say, rather that religions exist in a hierarchy, and that their church sits at the very top of it. Members are taught to treat their fellow prey animals with kindness and solidarity, unfortunately this often comes off as insincere and condescending. Rangale believes that Paradise is a celestial plane that awaits them when they die. Paradise has no sickness or sorrow, instead they will enjoy eternal life and happiness within the heavenly embrace of Hart. Paradise is typically depicted as an endless shimmering meadow abundant with fruit and vegetation. Rangale doesn't have a concept of hell, rather the wicked are punished by not being invited to partake in eternal glory with the heaven father. Instead, when they die, their soul simply withers up and their existence is terminated. No heaven, only oblivion. The ultimate disgrace. There are no predators in Paradise. Rangale teaches that predators are not born with souls, this is why they lust and hunger for the flesh of the innocent- they wish to fill the void within themselves. When predators die, they too cease to exist. I imagine Rangale would have some sort of creation myth to support their carnivore paranoia....perhaps eons ago, Hart set out to form a kingdom where all creatures could live in harmony. Hart and Dunn bore a child to serve as heir to the kingdom....but their fawn was stolen by power-hungry predators, hoping to seize the kingdom for themselves. When Hart refused to turn over his divine power in exchange for the return of his son, the predators devoured the fawn alive. And so, Hart cursed them and their kind for all eternity. Yay for church-sanctioned bigotry!

Genevieve's resemblance to Dunn was definitely a deciding factor when the council was considering a wife for Lune. But mostly the council cared that Genevieve was the eldest daughter of one of the village's wealthiest, most influential families. Gene was polite, sophisticated, beautiful (and thus hopefully sure to produce gorgeous fawns with Lune), and best of all, eager to please. She took well to the council shaping her to be a wife and mother, the council were definitely looking forward to the wedding. "Wiggle room" is an understatement, haha. The council of elders has a tough time avoiding cousin marriage because there are SO many illegitimate fawns running about. None of the higher ranking bucks really abide by the scruples they set for the herd- it's all but expected that they will have extramarital affairs. During rut season, some even leave the village on "missions of solitude and meditation", but really, they're going to drink, get rowdy with other bucks, and visit brothels. Although Rangale forbids same-sex relations, it still happens behind closed doors, especially during rut season. The rut is handled the same way frat dudes handle a big sporting event- mostly an excuse to kick back and get up to all sorts of debauchery. Female estrus (heat) coincides with rut season, yet does are expected to remain as demure and maidenly as ever. They are encouraged to reject sexual advances at least once or twice (even if it's desired- even if it's coming from their husband) as to uphold their "purity". Unwed young does are made to reside in temporary isolated quarters during their estrus, so as not to lead the town bucks "into temptation". The problems that arise from estrus- moodiness, irritability, weight gain, body aches, depression- are typically dismissed as womanly trifles, and does are expected to carry on work as usual (while bucks treat their rut more like a holiday break). So yep, Rangale has enough double standards to power a city

Yes! :) Both Hart and Dunn are finding growing popularity in modern religious circles, especially by LGBTQ+ groups looking to reclaim them. Hart is a big spooky deer god and many occultists vibe with his aesthetic and "wrathful avenger" vibes. Instead of a pure being that defines stifling perfection from his followers, modern occultists paint Hart as a beacon of truth and personal freedom, a being that encourages people to tap into their own inner celestial light and live their best life. Like modern Satanism, members don't actually believe Hart exists, they just use him as a symbol for liberty. Dunn is finding popularity in pagan circles. People love the idea of a loving eternal earth mother, and feminist groups quite like "liberating" Dunn from her subservient marriage to Hart. These groups quite like depicting Dunn ripping the arrow free from her chest. Other depictions instead empower her by having her wield a bow and arrow, or show her killing Hart and taking his antlers for herself. She's become a patron saint for orphaned or abandoned children (as well as single mothers and unhappy wives), and is a commonly used symbol in protesting to protect queer kids.

lopoddity

Thanks! :D Hart and Dunn were inspired by minor, unrelated deer deities that already existed in the public pantheon (most species all over the world have some version of father time/mother nature). Rangale just took existing religious figures and repackaged them in order to sell their regressive beliefs.

lopoddity

Thank you! :D I'm afraid I can't answer most of these just yet. :( Lune's parents are still in development.....for now, I figure Lune's dad is the highest ranking authority figure in Rangale, the Grand Stag. He's a pretty cold guy that resisted getting married as long as he could, until the council ultimately forced him to wed a young woman half his age. neither wanted children, but the leader failing to produce an heir was intolerable, so the pair begrudgingly had Lune and Victoria. Lune and Vi were kept on a short leash growing up, as they had to set an example for the community. Genevieve's parents are a wealthy couple from Rangale's elite class. They were thrilled that their daughter was chosen to marry Lune, the future lead stag. Lune and Victoria run away because they are miserable in Rangale, and know that if they stay, they will end up like their parents. Lune runs away to escape his arranged marriage to Genevieve, Victoria begs to come with him to avoid a life of cleaning and enduring emotional abuse and being a baby factory to some random buck (she knew the council was in talks of gifting her as a reward to a particularly dutiful village police officer). I'll explore why they left in depth in later posts. The fallout from Lune's abandonment, and how Genevieve feels about it, will also be explored in later posts. ;)

Bigsmile

I like that way more for both of them. And ripping the arrow out and using it to free yourself and liberate others? Now that's the kind of metal shit I'm all on board for! A God or gods demanding rigid ways towards "perfection " has always been my beef with certain depictions of real world religions. If that makes sense?

i've been wondering, how large is rangale? is it international, or small and insular? are its major figures, like lune's father, recognizable, or is it largely a mystery to the outside world? how is it viewed by deer that don't practice (as in ones from families that never did)?

lopoddity

Aha, I'm still figuring out the size myself. XD At first I figured the population was REALLY tiny, like just a couple hundred members, but I think realistically they'd need 2,000- 5,000 members to truly be a flourishing community (and avoid inbreeding). Rangale maintains a transient population of laborers and only permits the most devout (and the wealthiest) members to have permanent residency in the town. Lune's father is actually fairly uncontroversial (and avoids the public eye as much as possible. Rangale is a tightly guarded community, attempts to report on it from inside will be interrupted by Rangale's private police force. Still, despite the council's best efforts, information gets leaked and members sometime escape. There are rumors that Rangale engages in eugenics, that illegitimate fawns go missing in the snowy mountains, that does are starved and imprisoned to break their will- and it's uncertain how much of this is truth, and how much is just overblown gossip. While the town is largely shrouded in mystery, most locals know it as "that creepy deer cult".

tutt3rs

if there are representations of heaven in earth in their religion, is there one of Hell? some sort of embodiment of everything the herd shuns and discourages in its youth?

Gleeman and Artist

I love these designs. They look really cool. One of my favorite things is lore about religions in fantasy worlds.

Non-Euclidean Cat

Prey probably have a single predator embodiment of evil. A creature with a hunger that can never be satisfied that just endlessly kills and eats everything. A Lovecraftian conglomeration of predator elements.

Yvette Winters

That makes sense. And thank you for responding ^^
