Teddy convinces Lune to engage in some rare manly-macho antler sparring. Victoria is sick of everybody's shit.

Unless they take hormone treatment to prevent it, all AMAB deerfolk go through an annual rut season. Rut typically occurs in October, when a buck's antlers have finally grown in fully and shed their velvet covering. It's a period where a buck's testosterone levels spike, and with this usually comes an increase in aggression and irritability. Appetite and sex drive also usually ramp up. In the time leading up to rut, bucks have an easier time bulking up, and some may put on a considerable amount of muscle mass. Although rut effects everyone differently, it turns a lot of bucks, young and old, pretty much into loud frat dudes with a spiky hat made of knives.

Lune typically spends his rut feeling moody and restless, and can be found either relentlessly practicing ballet moves or curled up under a blanket with a tub of ice cream. Rut season leaves Teddy feeling strong and energized, he spends it devouring half his body weight in food and playing tons of contact sports. Both Teddy and Lune, however, feel the standard rut-induced drive to compete and dominate other bucks. So here you go- Teddy and Lune can't bear the tension anymore and lock antlers in a JCPenny's. Poor Victoria. All she wanted was to spruce up her autumn wardrobe...

Antlered sparring is pretty dangerous. Most antlers are sharp, a careless blow can gouge out an eye. Head and neck injuries are common, and furthermore, two bucks can accidentally tangle their antlers so badly that they cannot separate without medical assistance. Does this stop most bucks? Fuck no. Heck, many of them get drunk first. 'Murica! >:O The proper way to spar is to draw a circle on the ground, lock hands, then headbutt your opponent with as much force possible. First to be pushed outside the circle loses. It should be noted that Teddy could flip Lune like a pancake, if he really wanted to. He just wants his buddy to have a bit of fun, that's all. And Lune is~

Out of curiosity how does the Rangale cult characterize the daily rut season? Something to be embraced as the masculine Hart or somethign to be denied as too ‘worldly’?

Dean

Oooh interesting. Do (not gross) animal breeding season behaviors apply to other species? Because frankly I'd just love to see a bird citizen do a stupid little song and dance to impress a lady LMAO

Your captions are so incredibly funny

I don't know a thing about deer or moose, but I'm guessing they got tough skulls and necks? Also, how common is it for antlers folk to try their headbutting frat boy shenanigans on other species? Or even predators?

*wants to give a thoughtful comment on how much Im loving your deer lore and culture (white tails being one of my favorite animals ever), and adoring the thought you've put into their behaviors and even including fascinating unhealthy deer cults and religion I can't wait to hear more about* Instead.... TED IS SO FLUFFY OMFG I WANNA CUDDLE WITH HIM

Yup! Most critters have relationships/sex all year round, just like humans, but are still subject to the whims of their animal biology. Breeding season imperatives are not strong enough to obliterate a person's free will, Lune has been dutifully ignoring his rut instincts for years. Buuut they do present as a niggling urge in the back of a person's head, and these urges influence behavior and culture. Deerfolk duel- usually bucks, but sometimes does will fight as well during their estrus. Penguins gift each other shiny stones and pebbles (the jewelry industry has locked in on this and markets hard to penguins in the mating season). Cranes and birds of paradise perform elaborate dances for their mates that most other critters find kinda silly-looking. Eagle pairs lock their talons together and perform amazing aerial dance. Many animals experience an abrupt boost in creativity and motivation, and find themselves wanting to take on craft projects (which subconsciously simulate building a nest or den), write songs and dance (recreate the feeling of wooing a mate), or exercise (to bleed out all this newfound energy).

Yup! Most deer have strong, stroooong neck muscles (honed from years of carrying a heavy bone-crown atop their heads), and the testosterone boost from rut only strengthens them further. The antlers protect their skulls- the point of sparring isn't to smash their actual skulls together, but to use their antlers and powerful necks to shove their opponent away (and sometimes try to flip them). Deer want to lock antlers with any perceived "challenger", so they do sometimes try to spar with non-deer species. A predator that is being combative or hostile certainly will find themselves on the pointy end of those antlers (and hooves- defensive deer try to trample and maim their attackers).

Lune wants to cuddle with him too. That might be why he's so irritated right now, his years of repression have left him unable/unwilling to politely ask for a snuggle (which Ted would happily give). It's possible this buried snuggle-lust is what motivated Lune to agree to Ted's sparring challenge, something something "you construct intricate rituals which allow you to touch the fluff of other men".....

Curio Blue

I know that rut reason doesn't erase the free will of the people in Fuzzbutts, but I definitely headcanon that eventually, when Lune andTeddy DO get together, there's a very heated rut headbash sesh beforehand, and one thing leads to another and eventually, all those walls that Lune built up, start to crumble. Of course this is after yearsss of tension building, and Lune freaks out a bit before realizing that Ted isn't leaving. He's not repulsed. He's accepting, and warm, and maybe Lune cries a bit after, but it's the start of something sweet and amazing.

By the way their antlers are placed, I could imagine when they're done and let go, Teddy lifts his head and lifts Lune with him. There is a split-second realization of ‘oh fuck this was a mistake’ and they have to shimmy and maneuver their antlers apart while awkwardly squabbling which way to go. Tori doesn’t intervene and continues shopping elsewhere in the department. Others have to help😂

Animals irl like deer usually reproduce once a year, raising their offspring and sending them off and all that and doing it again- Since Rangale is a very conservative and traditional community, is this expected of the families there as well? Not the sending off part of course, but the trying to reproduce every estrus/rut cycle? That certainly would insure the population stayed stable no matter how many members eventually fled.

Yvette Winters

Seeing one of you(Lop's) comments here, Lune's reason for blushing is confirmed in my head. He IS getting hot and bothered.

Wellllll.....Rangale certainly does want its members to keep making fresh new fawns to add to the flock, buuuut it's also a smallish community located in the mountains that undergoes a fearsome winter every year. Resources are limited and overpopulation poses a real danger. Population control is indeed a thing in nature, irl deer numbers are kept in check by predators, and irl does will naturally abort/reabsorb their unborn offspring if living conditions are too harsh. So while Rangale doesn't exactly ENCOURAGE abortion (can't have our women exerting too much control over their bodies and lives!), it views culling as a necessary component of managing a herd. All pregnancies must be reported to the council of elders as early as possible. The council bills this as a positive thing- they say they simply want each expecting doe to be provided for. The council rewards does for reporting by announcing the babies-to-be during church sermons and throwing the mothers a baby shower, during which all community members gift baby supplies. But really.....the council requires does to report their pregnancies so they can nip overpopulation in the bud. A family that reproduces recklessly requires a larger council stipend to stay fed and housed....and should the council refuse to accommodate and let the family go hungry, the family might leave Rangale and take their labor potential with them. Unacceptable. So if a lower-ranking buck and doe have happily, thoughtlessly popped out four fawns and are happily expecting their fifth that spring, the council might pay them a friendly visit and "gently encourage" them to abort. Tactics range from offering a financial incentive to terminate the pregnancy to simply threatening to excommunicate the buck and place the doe into a new arranged marriage. Should it be too late in the pregnancy to terminate.....well, there ARE rumors of young fawns going missing in the mountains, and nobody has ever managed to confirm or negate these rumors... Abortion also occurs in elite circles, where infidelity is more rampant. Illegitimate fawns are terminated , or, if already born, placed into the care of a lower-ranking family. The council keeps all of this extremely hush-hush. Rangale will not punish/prevent a doe who seeks contraception/abortion, but they also will not protect her from public scorn and shame if her secret gets out, so it's for the best that everyone keeps their lips sealed (and their pregnancies planned).

man i didn't even intend this drawing to be particularly shippy but you are KILLING me here💖

Possibly....I mostly added the flush to show this is waaaay more strenuous for Lune than it is for Teddy. Ted could literally do this all day~
