I asked y'all what species you thought I should use for my planned conspiracy theorist character and "aye-aye" (Daubentonia madagascariensis) really seemed to be the popular choice! I dig it, those long spindly fingers and huge eyes are a perfect fit.

Meet Mimi. Disheveled appearance and frumpy mom-clothes aside, Mimi is younger than you think. She's currently a Ph.D student of primatology at Critter City Zooniversity. She also works there part-time as a librarian. Mimi is utterly brilliant, passionate, and extremely eccentric. Convinced that the world around her holds secrets beyond imagination, Mimi spends much of her free time munching handfuls of toasted grubs, obsessively pouring over curious, long-discarded scientific theories. She can't help it. Where did everyone come from? How did everyone, no matter how different, seem to evolve sapience around the same time? Why did some animals develop intelligence and culture, while some species, like bugs and fish, remain inert and feral? Their world seems quite silly and inconsistent when you really think about it. There's got to be something greater at play here.....

Mimi hosts a podcast that she uses to chatter endlessly about her bizarre findings and hypotheses. She is a distant cousin of Penny's, and much like her cousin, has pretty much zero sense of personal space or social filter. Mimi Aiyai says what she means, does what she wants, and does not care about the fools that laugh at her or whisper behind her back. Someday the whole world will see her theories as scientific fact, and then we'll see who's crazy, Bruce! >:D

100% would listen to her podcast. I feel like it would be like when I was a kid listening to Art Bell on the radio in the middle of the night.

Did you know in some cultures, the aye-aye is considered an omen of bad luck? I feel like Bruce certainly thinks so as well, and that everytime he runs into her something happens to him to make him lose lunch or he comes home to Sunny destroying the apartment cause a firetruck went by

OH and what if this were actually sorta true? She doesn't cause bad luck, but SENSES it. She strikes me as the type to have something like a Pinkie Sense where she knows IMMEDIATELY before something unlucky/highly inconvenient is about to happen to those around her (which has maybe been a positive source of inpiration for allowing her to connect new theories/facts together...?)

Oh my god I can't wait to see more of her. Bruce would probably think he was in a nightmare if he encountered Penny AND Mimi teamin' up against him!

Lop im going to assign this character my signature shitty legwarmers in my mind okay, she owns a pair. She thinks they're fashionable and cool, look at her >:) These are the only "special" clothing she has among lumpy sweaters and chunky skirts. She only pulls them out on very important occasions much to her schoolmates' dismay. Penny totally bought them for her as a joke but then she just. unironically started wearing them. thank u for coming to my ted talk.

Mimi: I bet you weren't expecting THIS *getting ready to seductively hike up her skirt* Bruce: Oh god. Please, don't- Mimi: Ha-HA! *yanks up skirt to reveal the most hideous neon colored legwarmers in all of creation* Bruce: *relieved sigh* Oh. That's okay then

WOO glad im here to be a bad influence on your characters, here some more rambles for you to consider! Despite this gal's rather drab style of dress, against all odds she LOVES death metal and 80s music and often listens to playlists of the stuff while she putters around the university library. While she is quite fond of music for it's artistry, do not ask her to dance, you will never recover emotionally from the ordeal. While Maul Madness isn't exactly her style it wouldn't be odd for her to occasionally swing by any of their smaller bar gigs to listen for a bit, just hanging out near the wall and staring dead-eyed at any who dare approach her. I'd like to think she's casual friends with Cass. While Cass is the artist- Mimi occasionally dabbles in writing. For all her technical jargon and lack of social skills, she somehow manages to write the most dramatic, passionate, utterly awful romance short stories in all of fuzzy history. It's awful, Cass loves it and often doodles her characters. A quick sneak peek at one of Mimi's new projects is often enough to temporarily pull Cass out of her depression funk for some genuine happiness as she listens to her friend ramble about her little dudes who kiss sometimes. okay that's all i got i will now sprint away

"Where did everyone come from? How did everyone, no matter how different, seem to evolve sapience around the same time?" Oh, there's that silly conspiracy theory about an ancient mythical race called humans who did it.

Non-Euclidean Cat

You'll have to picture the ancient aliens meme template of Giorgio A. Tsoukalos. "Humans"

Bruce:....Nope, you're still the reining nutcase here I love her so much :D Imagine the heated debates and discussions with Penny over various controversial topics when they get together.

omg im so glad this worked out. was just reading your previous post and i was like "man a aye-aye would be dope"

Something about her is giving me big Mrs. Carmody from The Mist vibes. I love that she has giant eyes but still needs glasses. So what's the agreed upon scientific explanation for almost every animal having sapience? And what are the crazy conspiracy theories about it? I need the lore!! 🤓

lopoddity

They debate, they dish, they groom each other for tasty lice

Your comment inspired me to to re-read the Mist. Probably my favorite King story, even if (imo) the movie has a better ending. ;) The most commonly agreed upon explanation for why so many animals simultaneously evolved intelligence is that it was a byproduct of them becoming more social. Living in tribes was beneficial for hunting/gathering and caring for young, so animals all across the board evolved to do so. From this came the development of larger brains, language, tool use, art, etc. Animals all over had to evolve rapidly to keep up with their peers. Civilization is born as critters slowly stop hunting and eating each other and establish trade instead. Symbiosis shapes species, for example herding dogs are thought to have evolved to protect the sheep and cattle they formed trade alliances with. Mimi thinks these theories have more holes than swiss cheese, and substitutes her own conspiracies instead.

Aye-Aye's are one of my favorite animals omg I'm so excited for more of them
