decided to dump PB and Jam being otters in Fuzzbutts, because that earned me an impressive amount of comparisons to a certain old Disney cartoon that I ain't about to subject myself to again. Meet Cupcake's adoptive siblings, Jamie and Jazz Sweet. They were adopted by Cupcake's parents as toddlers, about five years after Cupcake's own adoption.

Jamie is quite gifted musically, but lacks the confidence needed to land that one big part he's dreamed of since he was tiny. Since landing bit parts at local Rainbow Road theater pays peanuts, he's currently gainfully employed at the Honeycomb, a cozy bakery that doubles as a queer-focused bookstore. Jamie is sweet, thoughtful, ridiculously acrobatic, and always genuine when he asks how his customers are doing as he pours their coffee. Jamie was once a painfully shy child that struggled with selective mutism, so his family, especially his siblings (especially Cupcake, good lord), are quite overprotective of him. Jamie sometimes appreciates this, but mostly wishes his family would realize he's a full-grown monkey now. He even almost said a swear word yesterday! >:I

Jazz is a peculiar contrast to her brother- she is confident, cunning, and sees no problem with manipulating rubes to get what she wants. Jazz runs in some pretty shady circles (that she keeps secret from her family) and may or may not associate with other dealers in dubious affairs...like Virgil. Despite her small size, Jazz is adamant she can take care of herself....and she does, partly thanks to a bit of hired muscle (Smokescreen expy when?). When not being gay and committing crimes, Jazz likes investing in her community and dabbles in amateur stand-up comedy. She has never missed a single performance of Jamie's. Despite only being a month or two older than him, she dutifully plays the part of the teasing big sister, and refers to him as "kid". Jazz's one weakness seems to be the unflinching stare of her elder sister Cupcake- to which she is powerless to lie to. Her solution to this is to speak in half-truths and weasel words until she can make a break for it before Cupcake can snatch her up.

notes

-Jazz and Jamie share no biological relation. They were two idiot babs that met at the orphanage, saw that they were both monkeys, and consequently decided they must therefore be siblings. They've been inseparable ever since.

-Both monkeys are about 5 years younger than Cupcake. Having doted on them since they were babies, Cupcake may or may not be secretly delighted that the massive size difference between herself and her sibs means she can still scoop them up. Both monkeys quite like to climb and ride on Cupcake's shoulders like the walking brick wall she is.

-Jazz and Jamie are both genderfluid, just like their Pandoraverse counterparts.

-Jamie is still addressed as PB or Peebles by close friends and family (with Jazz sometimes calling him Jim). Jamie calls Jazz by her full name when he's angry/annoyed with her ("Jasmine Angelica Marie Sweet, you get back here this instant!!"), as this is an excellent way to PARALYZE her from sheer embarrassment when done in public.

-Both monkeys are friends of Penny's, and the older lemur puts in an embarrassing amount of effort trying to show her fellow primates that she's still hip and with it. She's fortunate both siblings find her cringey attempts at modern slang and trendy dances to be endearing.

Oooooooh, I love these!!!!! 😮⚘️⚘️⚘️

WAr

I think these suit them better than the otter idea imo!!

Rheanna

I was going to say Komodo dragon for Smokescreen but then if you decide to bring in Monty for some reason he’s the one with the poisonous bite so a Komodo would really make more sense there. So, alligator for Smokescreen perhaps? :)

Doglover502

I like how their intitials are little homages to their MLP start. That's really cute Oh shoot. How the heck did Jazz get involved with Virgil?....also what kind of business does Virgil DO exactly, or is that too spoiler-y territory? (Although I do have my own theory...)

feathermaws

Something about Jamie’s color palette makes my smol brain very happy

Melody Williamson

Wait, what disney cartoon? (Sorry I just gotta know lol) its fun you made monkey characters. They're really rare as a furry species.

shield

ough.. fluffy....

lopoddity

Disney's PB&J Otter, a preschooler cartoon from the 90s. It's cute if one or two people go "hey, your art reminds me of that one old cartoon! Remember that?" But when twenty people do it....well, it's less cute. It's annoying, if I'm being honest. And it sucks that I can't make certain characters certain species, because I KNOW people will be a broken record about "hey, this is just like X! Did you mean to make a reference to X? Is no one gonna point out the reference to X??" Blugh. In this case it's not all bad, I feel like monkeys are a more fun choice anyway. More interesting to draw too

lopoddity

What's your theory? :3 Virgil: Oh, me and Jaybird here got involved when we discovered we both had a vested interest- Jazz: In what could really only be described as- Both, in unison: ....Monkey business. :)

lopoddity

Thanks! :D And it's alright, it can't be helped. I did spend almost a decade drawing fanart of a popular children's' cartoon.....Fuzzbutts is in itself a derivative import of said fanart. Comparisons come with the territory. I just wish people wouldn't be so....incessant about it, particularly in asking if I'm referencing a piece of pop media I've never seen, nor have interest in seeing. I understand people aren't being malicious, though.

D

Oh this is so cute! I can't wait to see their size comparisons to other characters at some point, since I'm having a hard time picturing it (namely how they look being scooped by their eagle-eyed big sis). I love these designs sm

lopoddity

Thank you! :) Yes, I'll be drawing them next to other characters soon. They're medium-sized, about the same height as Sunny.

The Faerie Merchant

I really love their designs sm! A lot of monkey designs can really dip into the uncanny valley due too their human-ness but these fellas are looking absolutely wonderful. I think the monkey concept really suits them, even more than the otters. I actually just noticed you exclusively draw every animal with 3 fingers! Is that canon or just your current art style? /asking in case I ever do fanart/ edit: does pb ever get involved with midnights expy? Is she still a porcupine?

lopoddity

Aw thanks! :D I was actually hesitant to put primates in FB for that very reason- it being too easy for their designs to lean into the uncanny valley- but I honestly adore monkeys and apes and couldn't resist having some in the cast. Yes, every critter in FB (save for animals like birds and snakes) has just 4 digits on each hand- 3 fingers and a thumb. I find it helps them feel a bit more feral, a bit less human. It's purely a design choice, for example when I draw the MLP characters as anthros I give them five fingers, since they're basically a giant horse head on a human body. If you ever do make fanart, I'd sure love to see it! :3 PB probably does still get involved with Midnight's expy, that romance/friendship always was one of my favorite aspects of the pandoraverse. I don't think I can get away with making her a porcupine, though, too many people see a goth porcupine and think of that one character from Sing. Also, drawing all those quills is a pain. Right now I've been thinking that Midnight might be a goat, though I'm still turning the idea over in my head. I'm also considering raven, owl, hedgehog, and bat.....and I am very, very tempted to make her a cute little bunny.

The Faerie Merchant

The hand thing is a really nice touch to the world. I love the subtle nudge here or there to help worlds feel more unique and grounded! As for midnights expy, all of those options sound great and making her a cute little bunny would be absolutely hilarious. Admittedly I am biased to the owl idea as owls are my favorite animals and I’d love to see more birds! Many owls are adorable little tiny things as well so you could still have the cute animal being edgy factor, like a barn owl or elf owl. But regardless whatever you come up with, I bet it will be great and suit her wonderfully!

The Faerie Merchant

o jeez sorry for another comment but i just have to ask did Sebastian and carmella’s criminal history influence jazz’ con artist gig??

Angsty Ram

While I love the idea of her being a funky goth bat… the idea of her being a cute little bunny is incredible

lopoddity

Never apologize for commenting! :) That's certainly possible. Sebastian and Carmella were never CRIMINAL criminals, they never set out looking to get into trouble or harm people. Their crimes were largely that of civil disobedience or self-defense (eg. collaborating to scare off a cat trying to take over their traveling circus, encouraging folks to unionize and refuse to give money to landlords, sheltering people without homes, stealing food to give to the poor, that one time they used a carefully suspended axe to chop the tail off a wannabe gangster). They told (sanitized, kid-friendly) versions of these tales as bedtime stories to their children, which may have led to Jazz's love of screwing over people who deserve it (or at least people she believes deserve it).

lopoddity

Midnight: The darkness in my soul is like a black hole. An endless sink of unstoppable force that devours all light that strays too close. Midnight: *lil bunny nose twitches*

Silverwinds

Omg a bat!!! I vote bat for Midnight!

Bigsmile

Coffee? Does Jaime work for a certain reindeer at a certain Christmas themed coffee/pastry shop???

lopoddity

I very much like the idea of her being a bat, but I'm still pondering how I'm gonna handle her hands. Bats have "fingers" like we do, with a membrane stretched between each digit so they can fly. Super cool evolutionary feature! But probably wouldn't lend itself well to being an anthro furry person that needs to hold stuff and write and text on a phone. Like, imagine your fingers were completely webbed and also attached via membrane to your elbows and armpits. Gonna be a tough time figuring out how she can use her wing-arms for anything besides flying

Bigsmile

Trading organs on the black market. That's my bet

PrincessMuffinArt

If you want to make it easier, you can draw a simplifed anthro bat, similar to Rouge, where the wings are on the back. Also I like the idea of bunny Midnight too. Because the idea of a goth bunny girl is interesting to me! Plus, gives homage to her pandoraverse!self where she has a cute name and face, but isn’t having any of it,

Doglover502

Yeah something similar to Bigsmile's reply. I think he's a black market source for carnivores to get their paws/talons/claws/whatever else on some real meat

Jason Hutzel

smokescreen would definitely need to be a big thick animal like a crocodile or a pangolin and you could go the special agent smith route with his name

Curio Blue

Oooh I could see them being a komodo dragon! Or perhaps a pangolin would be super cool!

Robo87

Oooh I love them so so much!!! Getting so many IDEAS!!! Here's a couple off the top of my head for Jazzy! I'll be cooking up some moar for her and her PRECIOUS BRODER HE'S MY FAVORITE TYPE OF MONKEY!!! Also I still picture Smoky's expo as a massive ass saltwater croc _Jazz_ -Pansexual? Like you said genderfluid (likes to say they identify as a threat and their pronouns are try/me) -Inspired to dye her hair after meeting Penny a few times (she rocks a bitchin' hot pink mohawk but has had every color under the rainbow...including the rainbow) -Casual flirtatious (one-sided?) relationship with Priscilla.

Doglover502

I guess to elaborate (cause I thought about this a bit 😅), Virgil, after being a paramedic, gets new work at a morgue. Probably leaning into that stereotype you said that hyenas are considered an omen of death. He still deals with other animals, but more ones in grief than complete panic. But really, it's a cover to get to the source of "real meat". Using his paramedic skills, he can basically extract all the meat (and maybe some organs too) but after he's done, doll the dead bodies up to stuff them up so no one's the wiser. And maybe having a certain tattoo artist to also help make the makeup look more convincing Tldr: Virgil does taxidermy :)

Nina

Out of all of your Fuzzbutts designs, these two have to be one of my favorites

lopoddity

Ha, so funny story. A while ago I wrote a short comic where Sunny introduces Virgil to his parents for the first time- and Bud of course takes his son off to the side to worriedly recant a (false) story he read on Fuzzbook about a hyena that got caught stealing bones from the city morgue. It was meant to show how closeminded Sunny's parents are and demonstrate the kinda stereotypes Virgil has to put up with, so I'm tickled you figure he actually does get up to that kinda thing. XD Mortician!Virgil is a fun idea! I've always figured that Virgil is a surprisingly silly character, like if FB were an animated series he'd probably sing a few bouncy villain songs in the same vein of Little Shop of Horrors. The idea of him doing so in a morgue, probably doing the waltz with a fresh corpse, is lowkey hilarious. Just like the ending number in LSoH: Sunny: Every household in America.....thousands will get eaten! That's what you had in mind all along, isn't it? Virgil: No shit, Sherlock. :) I like this idea, and I'll do further thinking on it. I'm surprised by how many people are under the impression Virgil is either eating people or selling people-meat to others, cuz I gotta admit, I didn't really ever plan to have that kinda grim Beastars-ish element in FB. Eating corpse meat in FB is treated with the exact kind of horror and disgust as it is in our world. Make no mistake, Virgil gets up to some ghoulish shit- but slicing up people and serving them for dinner isn't on his to-do list~
