"Are there pets in Fuzzbutts?"

Hmm. As I develop FB, the part of my brain that wants to keep things realistic is often at odds with that part of my mind that wants to inject silly bullshit. The concept of fish dogs is so stupid it kinda pisses me off? At the same time.....hrrrng. Fish doggies. Guppy puppies. Kinda love it

idk how canon any of this is, just spitballing for now

In FB, all mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds are sapient anthropormorphic people. Insects and fish are not. Except sharks. Because sharks are rad. But if sharks can evolve the absolutely insane level of adaptions required to leave the ocean and develop bipedalism (and breathe air...and survive in fresh and salt water....and toughen their cartilage to the point they could even stand and walk under Earth's gravity...), well, maybe other fish might've started evolving for life on land as well. Very slowly. Marine animals eat fish. To this day, fish remains one of the most common sources of protein for predators on both land and sea. But also...over thousands of years, as man shaped the evolution of wolves into dogs, so too did the early people of Fuzzbutts start domesticating the gaspy floundering fish-critters that would flop up on land to steal food scraps from settlements.

Fish dogs were uh, initially bred for food (how convenient to have a handy source of meat that also feeds on your garbage). But over time, they became the charmingly clumsy companions of Fuzzbutt-kind. They are of remarkably low intelligence. They make odd wheezy sounds, and their lil damp fin-feet make slappity-slap noises as they run. They bite. They drool. They are smelly. They are beloved.

Katie is shown here taking the occasional paid gig as neighborhood dog walker. Going from left to right, the dogs' names are Molly Waddles (salmon), Kevin (catfish), and Princess Fishy Feet (eel).

There's some rationale to which critters I picked to be sapient, but some I picked just cuz I plain like them. I like frogs, and axolotls, and salamanders, and I already have a few amphibian characters in development. Intelligence isn't the issue so much as ease of evolution- if a shark can sprout legs and breathe air, than a frog can stand on two legs and wear pants.

Elsa

They ARE silly, but I am completely and utterly enamored with the idea of them dopily waddling after people with a goofy little plap-plap-plap-plap sound effect, while breathing like a French bulldog.

PrairieGhosted

this is a very silly suggestion but if u wanted an easy swap for dog u could call them pet cod.....a codwalker....ANYWAY this is a cute & extremely silly concept . imagining pet mudskippers as some kind of pedigree hehehehe

PrincessMuffinArt

Oh I love them! Gives me Splatoon vibes (the smallfry comes to mind)! It’s fine to be a little silly! It’s a fantasy world and seeing little fish pubbies are adorable! :D

FloweryFruitFangs

This is such a goofy concept that I can't help but love it. If this were to become canon, would "normal" salmon, catfish, and eels still exist as we know them today?

Corinne Stephenson

It's the same as people keeping pigs. They make really good pets.... Or they make a really prosciutto.

Bigsmile

Those fish puppers are God dam Hideous abominations and I love them 💕. Maybe they only reproduce in quantity suitable for meat consumption in the ocean? Ocean people don't have as much of a problem with meat or meat substitutes like land predators do? Also land puppers could be less nutritious and tasty as the meat substitute options for la d predators so the tension for the Fake Meat debate can remai..

WAr

Would anyone we already know in the FB universe have one? I could see Sunny impulse buying one and then Bruce and Sky inevitably having to take care of it

Scyllarus

I kept aquariums for so long omf. There would absolutely be people claiming how smart their fish pup (fup?) is (and...Given the way evolution appears to work in Fuzzbutts, they might be right?) I'm also deeply amused at ridiculously finned show bettas, plecos annoying everyone by sucking on them, the big tough dudes with their gars and other toothy pups... If fish are dog analogues, would oversized bugs/inverts be cat analogues?

Princess H. Petals Blossom

I WOULD LOVE A FISH DOG! lol i'm just imagining if my gold fish was that sort of pet, he is already so...not the brightest, in dog form it would be hilarioua

Robo87

They are ABOMINATIONS and I want no less then 24 of them 😍😍 Ohhh I can totally see really bouji people having fancy beautiful purebreds like beta and kois that have spanning pedigrees and win lots of money in fish shows and are treated better then most children and are probably so inbred and highstrung they might die if someone coughs on them once. Meanwhile the average joe's fish pet is so mixed breed you can't even tell what it's closest ancestry was and they can probably survive a bomb going off You know koi shows and breeding is actually a thing? I used to watch a show on it and it's INSANE how much goes into breeding them for certain patterns and some of these fish (ONE fish) can sell for THOUSANDS of dollars.

RagingRiptide

I LOVE this!! Fish dogs and guppy puppies 😭 I also think giant insects pets would be fun too!! Like a fluffy lunar moth!

lopoddity

they all collectively breathe like that one stalker kid from Hey Arnold that Helga used to punch

lopoddity

I think they exist, they just look slightly different and goofier than irl fish. The overwhelming majority of fish live in oceans and other bodies of water, and are not capable of surviving on land the way pet fish are.

lopoddity

Sunny absolutely would impulse by a pet fish (which still need a proper collective name for their species....guppers? bubble puppies? land lubbers? ARGH) if he could afford it. As is, I could see him owning a beloved pet hermit crab that lives in a tank, or maybe a large pet cleaner roach or giant isopod that scuttles around the apartment feeding on the constant supply of shed dog hair.

lopoddity

Oversized moths would be cat analogues. :3 There is a potentially large variety of oversized pet insects (eg. moths, spiders, isopods) that all have their own breed personalities. Moths are cuddly, spiders are aloof, isopods are basically living roombas, head empty no thoughts

lopoddity

Ha, I originally had a fancy coi "show dog" to Katie's right! Def agree people would have insanely beautiful, insanely inbred, insanely health-issue-riddled fancy fish. A rich home just isn't a rich home unless you have several wall-eyed coi dogs fluttering around running headfirst into walls

Robo87

"I can trace my Princess Scaly-Kins Muffintop the 4th's ancestry all the way to the first evolution! Oh darling she's worth more than you make in a year" "What...what is she doing? Is she okay?" *Princess Scaly-Kins Muffintop the 4th having convulsions on the ground at the fish park* "Oh she'll be fine, she's just attempting to roll in the dirt. Don't make direct eye contact with her or she may attack"

I think it would be cool to explore the idea of large insects as pets. In movies like "Honey I shrunk the kids" and "Ant-Man" people will very easily view a large ant as a lovable (if kinda weird looking) dog with an exoskeleton. In "Futurama" Amy's beloved Betsy is a cow-themed beetle; and even in "Kim Possible" Ron became super attached to a cockroach the size of a beagle. I honestly think if early man had been around in the the age of giant insects we would've 100% domesticated dragonflies and spiders. Also all of the bug pet possibilities? "My pet cicada keeps leaving her molted skin all over the place", "I would both kill and die for my pet grasshopper, but if he keeps chirping all hours of the night I'm gonna lose it", "My little Jackie was so sweet as a caterpillar, but ever since she came out of her cocoon as a butterfly she's been distant". Bumblebees and ants as working class pets. Butterflies of all different types shown off in competitions. Spiders getting a bad rap for being "ugly" and "mean", but under the right owner can be the sweetest beings in the universe! Honestly I could go on there's so much to explore. Also with bugs as pets you don't have to worry about how to work around the issue of "Why did sharks evolve but not other fish??". This is all just an idea (that I unintentionally ended up word-vomiting), but whatever you choose to do I'll love it! Fuzzbutts is such an awesome world, and I always look forward to seeing an update from you building upon said world.

Harmony

These are adorable but now I am also imagining like fluffy big moths as pets too

Doglover502

I love Princess Fishy Feet the most. I wanna plush of her. I love her But this makes sense. Kinda like how some people have pet chickens and pigs even though we still eat tenders and bacon. Would cephalopods be sapient, or would they also be squishy non-sapient adorable abominations?

Gleeman and Artist

I think you should put as much silly stuff in FB as you want. You gotta have fun making this world, too. I personally love this this idea haha

Haley Riggs

I would own like… 30 fish-dogs.
