Skye is kind of a fairly self-actualized character (she's largely content with her job as a blogger/social activist, and her relationship with Sunny), so I decided to throw a wrench in her gears in the form of one character foil....Honey Meadowsweet.

Honey is sweet. Outwardly. She's polite and pleasant and organizes community bake sales. She is also, in her own words, a paragon of right-wing sensibility in a sea of bleeding heart liberalism.

Dogs are friendly and accepting- notoriously so. But they are also pack animals. While many canines in FB are perfectly welcoming, some dogs start developing notions about who does and does not constitute "pack"-ie. people who do and do not belong to their desired in-group. This social exclusivity has a curious correlation with wealth, with quite a few wealthy dogs quite focused on dictating who is permitted in their social circles, who are permitted to marry their children, and who are permitted to get their filthy paws anywhere close to their money.

Honey hails from a conservative, old-money pack that emphasized both ruthless pursuit of capital and insistence on rigid social hierarchies (eg. don't interact with the poors). Honey is a political science student currently focusing on earning her Master's degree so that she might push her values on the world. She's also acquired some repute as a social media presence...though the right word may be "grifter". It's unclear how much of Honey's political rhetoric she actually believes...she seems to simply say whatever will earn her the most online outrage. Honey, you see, is a contrarian and seems to enjoy stirring the pot for her own amusement- so she gets quite a thrill from meeting Skye, who talks about political concepts like they actually, y'know, matter. How cute!

Honey is quietly amused by Biscuit and Buddy's hopes she will someday marry Sunny and mother his children, because she's very much gay. This is something that she must unfortunately keep on the down-low within her community, lest she be shunned or ousted. Honey seems to have no trouble compromising her identity to win approval from people she seems important- she will, for example, network with older traditionalist dogs that openly sneer at queer identities. I'm sure this isn't at all slowly eating away at her soul.....nor a reason for her to be so fixated on teasing/antagonizing Skye, a dog who is unapologetically herself.

Honey's whole deal reminds me of a tiktok I saw months ago about how young pretty conservative women buy into a system that sees them as property because they're "hot property" and therefore exceptions will be made for them, either not realizing or in denial of the fact that their superiority has an expiration date and one day the politics they uphold will turn around and eat them alive just as eagerly as it does the "inferior" people they've spent their lives looking down on. Like her behavior makes my skin crawl but there's also this weird sense of perverse pity because she's actively setting herself up for a lifetime of resentment and dissatisfaction when the social framework that was designed to objectify her ends up working exactly as intended.

….oh! oh. oh man. okay, that makes…. plenty of sense. Honey, no, i was cheering for youuuu….. but this is suuper interesting, i can’t wait to see how their relationships shake up!

Rowan Roach

Wooooooooooow, Honey. you are fucking scum.

mirarevias

Knew she was a lesbian, but her being an outright far-right contrarian is an amusing development. Interested to see how things develop with her as a foil to Skye, and if Skye (being as tenacious as she is) will manage to eventually pop Honey's jerk bubble or not.

lopoddity

damn, what gave away her lesbianism? was it her whole cutesy cottagecore aesthetic? XD and here i thought i was being clever oh Skye's gonna pop something alright. Be it Honey's privileged jerk bubble or her own blood vessel, only time will tell

PrincessMuffinArt

Cutesy characters with a dark side! Also, wow, she’s pretty easy to hate (in a storytelling/good way of course)! Skye has every right to be suspicious.

lopoddity

Thanks! A character like this is definitely a challenge to write, I was aiming for a sort of "love to hate her" sort of thing. Evil, but in an entertaining way.

Bigsmile

She's a total prick..... But I can't help but admire the desire to rile people up for fun.... But still, what a hilarious jackass 😡😡🤣🤣 can't wait for her whole empire of hypocrisy to crumble around her

Must Love Frogs

Self-loathing gay conservative dog, meet self-loathing bi religious monkey. I'll just lock this door from the outside.

FancylionFarts

Honey is very much like people I have met before, who are liked for their cutesy face and mannerisms, despite being or at least acting like terrible people. Kudos to you on making her so realistic and relatable.

Nina

I thought that she was asexual for sure, so you fooled me XD

mirarevias

There was just a... Vibe I caught from her, plus you saying, "I wonder WHY" in reference to her still being single clued me in as well... But yeah, that cottagecore definitely help signal it 😂 Also, bless her heart (Skye), having been in this position (kinda), I empathize and I hope that she has a vivid imagination so she can imagine popping Honey's head like a balloon like I do to purposefully antagonistic "family friends" if reasoning doesn't work. 🤔

lopoddity

Oh her and Grant would get along like a sinner on fire. They can sit around in their church basement fold-out chairs discussing what a crime it is their hard-earned tax dollars go to welfare leeches-all while fending off their wayward homoerotic thoughts with a yardstick

MysterySoup

Is there anything Honey does in her free time that makes her happy without possibly feeling conflicted or self hatey? If she's comfortable identifying as a lesbien, at least to herself, but still probably sincerely holds conservative views/values, I wonder what she does to feel safe and warm surrounded in a community that might reject her without compromising who she knows she is.

lopoddity

Good question! Honey has many, many, many hobbies, mostly kinda tradwife-y things she was pushed into growing up to make her a proper young lady, but she's "reclaimed" quite a few of these hobbies because she genuinely enjoys them. Cooking (especially baking bread), flower arranging, embroidery, knitting, scrapbooking, singing, collecting and restoring antique dolls. She is quite skilled in all of these and gets an honest thrill showing off her work. But whenever she feels sad and lonely (which happens more often than she'd admit), she brews herself a pot of tea, curls up with a thick comforter, and puts on a movie musical- preferably an animated one. Simple, saccharine stories where a character sings about wanting more out of life, then struggles, then ultimately earns a happy ending for themselves are right up Honey's alley. Disney doesn't exist in FB, but if it did Honey's favorite movie would probably be Mulan....and she'd sing "Reflection" to herself without a trace of self awareness

Biscuit

Is or was there ever a time where Honey has tried to get under the skin of someone by stirring the melting pot of political opinions but, a.) got aggravated because recipient ignored or didn't care for said topic or, b.) got her ass handed to her? I love the thought of her trying someone who wasn't the one and it wrecks her so badly that she has to rethink some things about her morality and personality. (Yes, I'm already anticipating her reckoning)

lopoddity

She's actually deeply inspired by the character Cynthia, from Alison Bechdel's comic series "Dykes to Watch Out For".

MysterySoup

Thank you so much for replying! It makes me happy she finds happiness, even though loneliness can be hard, within herself and not be just a one sideded ignorant character full of so much self hate. All of your characters have so much depth and life to them, reading/looking at your art genuinely makes my day brighter❤️

Angsty Ram

The real question is; is anyone else able to see through the cottagecore, pup next door vibe? Also I just love her already Xx

I am so glad I found out you have a patreon. I had no idea! I am so happy to see your work again after almost a year 🤗

lopoddity

I'm glad you found me! Thank you for your support! <3

PrairieGhosted

oh man she is.... very like some people I know and have (unfortunately) lived with , what a vibe for a character.... I am interested too in her home life growing up , and if there were any "turning point" relationships/friendships/experiences in her past that helped define the opinions & contrarian attitude she's built aside from just being brought up with those opinions, her fixation on Control & Manipulation & pushing those views outward is very interesting to me. I had a ( thankfully now ex) roomie who hid very similar views to her while actively saying opposite things to my face so the contrast in behavior is something I've always been interested and vexed by

WAr

Currently desperate for more skye and honey interactions now 🤣. What does Sunny think of honey? Is he aware his mom is pushing that relationship?

SketchyBug

Yeah, coming out in her community can go one of two ways. Either she’s ousted or they laud her as “one of the good ones” and use her as a way to appeal to the LGBT demographic a la Christian Walker, all the while being more than willing to throw her under the bus the moment they deem it convenient to do so.

DragonCookies

Oooh man Honey is already shaping up to be a fascinating character and I cannot wait to see where this goes. Really hoping people take the time to try and understand the reasoning behind her actions and not just jump straight to calling her names and other bad stuff. Like yes she’s definitely not doing good things but you still need to acknowledge the social climate she grew up in and why she believes in the things she does But yes nevertheless I’m very curious to see how she develops and what might cause cracks to start to form in her metaphorical mirror

Oh ho ho wouldn't it be quite the twist if later in life Skye's no longer with Sunny and her and Honey meet again. Skye's like all buff or something and Honey sees her and is immediately thrown into a gay panic. Like "OH NO SHE'S HOT!! But but she's not supposed to be. I hate her I'm supposed to hate her. But aaahhh she's so sexy. Shes so attractive...oh no she's coming this way." Skye passes her and gives her a nod and a small smile which proceeds to make Honey a bit weak in knees. Like this is set when they are in their late 20s early 30s and Honey's established in the conservative party and is well known. Then Skye shows up again and immediately throws her into a panic. Skye pretty much catches on the Honey is thrown into a gay panic whenever she sees her and Skye THOROUGHLY enjoys messing with her and getting her all awkward. Then whoopse romantic feelings emerge and it just gets more awkward and a bit sweet.
