Young Master M. Tiberius Knight, gifted kid and musical child ultra prodigy. Also featured is their treasured cello (and only friend), Philomena.

get a load of this dweeb

A snapshot of Mal from a long time ago. Mal was adopted as a infant by a pair of well-meaning but extremely strict prey animals, who figured they’d turn a savage predator into a success story. Mal does indeed grow up to be principal cellist within Zoo York Philarmonic Symphony Orchestra, but ultimately opts out of this extremely coveted life to do her own thing. As an adult, her relationship with her parents is….complicated, to say the least.

Oof, poor kid. What does Mal do now?

Emily Lemur

A dapper little darling! Now I need to find some heavy metal cello songs to project Mae and Topher onto 😍

RagingRiptide

Oh my goodness 🥰 what a cutie pie!!

I can’t wait to see mal’s parents and get info about them! Does Mal enjoy playing the Cello still?

lopoddity

Mal has like….a billion jobs (performer, dancer, artist, chef and caterer, youth basketball coach, domme…), but her main thing is busking. She takes her cello out to a busy street corner and plays, sometimes joined by Topher. She makes a LOT of money doing this.

Malika means so much to me, oh poor babey....

lopoddity

Yep! The cello is her favorite, but she can also play the violin and sitar. This is how she and Topher met, he’s a punk rock guitarist, but also a classically trained violinist. They bonded over having parents that never let them play the sort of music they wanted.

A mini Mal!! I would love to see more of her backstory, did her gigantism have any effect on the way her parents treated her? Also yikes, how common is it for herbivores to adopt carnivores in an attempt to "tame" them?

lopoddity

Her parents actually loved her gigantism, it made for such striking photos and media coverage- this enormous hulking predator hunched over a cello, playing music with such incredible grace and tenderness that the audience was often moved to tears. In private they were often frustrated with their rapidly-growing child's constant clumsiness (especially as Mal was raised in a home built for smallish prey animals, she often hit her head on doorways and fumbled the tiny teacups), and even perhaps a little afraid of her strength and sharp claws. In public though, they played the part of proud, proud parents...more enamored with the idea of Mal than Mal herself. While quite strict, they were never cruel, which made Mal feel like she owed them loyalty and obedience. Prey animals adopting pred kids to "save" or reform or re-educate is not very common (carnivore kids actually have the lowest adoption rates), but it happens enough for there to be lengthy public discourse about the issues with cross-species adoption, particularly with parents trying to force the child to assimilate into their species/cultural norms.

knickknacks

Ohh goodness, poor Mal. (this makes me think a bit of how sharply Mal's parents differ from what you showed us of Cupcake's awhile back! The way the Sweets approached raising Cupcake seems pretty much like the polar opposite of this...)

Baby Mal!! Oh my goodness ;; It's really really heartwarming to hear that despite everything, she still loves playing music and has turned that skill into something she loves and can do in her own way, rather than something stifling that was kind of thrust upon her. Have her parents ever seen or heard her playing/busking closer to the present day? I'd imagine her future turned out quite different from their plans for her, but- are they at least somewhat happy for the way that she is happy now? Or is it mostly disappointment for not sticking to the prestigious image/career they had in mind?

Mastodon

Oh, that's a very tough situation :'[ I'm glad she's out of there and doing her own thing now!

@knicknacks ough now im curious to see what would happen if mal and cupcake knew each other and discussed their upbringings

marsh_beast

What a precious BABY oh my god. I’m curious though- do instruments come in varying sizes depending on the species of the player? How does that work in things like an orchestra?

Bigsmile

Look at her wittle bow tie! Her parents seem like the opposite of Cupcake's, where Cupcake's parents accommodated her predator nature and adjusted whenever they screwed up, Mal's tried to turn her into something she plainly never could be. Even if it were from a place of love it don't matter much, love isn't enough, sadly.

lopoddity

Yep! Mal eventually had to retire Philomena when she grows too big to comfortably play her. She upgrades to a much bigger cello, Ludovica. Big animals use big instruments, small animals use small instruments. Orchestras take the size of their musicians into consideration and use careful positioning and sound amplification/dampening as needed (wouldn't want your boisterous elephant trumpet player to overpower your mouse french horn players tiny toots).

lopoddity

Nah, though they certainly are similar, aren't they? Montezuma’s relationship with his adoptive parents is FAR more hostile, they exploited and emotionally neglected him for years, then he grew up, burned down their house, and became a supervillain. Mal's story is a bit more down to earth, for all her independence, she does still seek and desire her parents' love and approval, their relationship causes her much frustration and anxiety

marsh_beast

Oh, cool! I love your worldbuilding- and I love the thought of Mal showing Topher Philomena the way one would introduce a childhood best friend.

mervielle

I’d love to see a snapshot of when Topher and Mal first met!!
