A little snippet from a series of drawings I’m working on exploring Marnie. Two things of note:

1.) featured are Marnie’s two best friends, Dot (white bunny) and Jacqueline (Jackie for short, the scruffy jackrabbit). Dot is an architect, Jackie is a professional track and field athlete. They’re in a perpetually squabbly on again-off again relationship that Marnie struggles to keep track of.

2.) small towns sometimes have historically been populated by a very specific animal majority (in Cottontail County’s case, it’s rabbits), which leads to species-specific cultural customs and language that residents insist is charming (eg. “everybunny”) that outsiders may find odd and exclusionary.

But does Marnie get the art teacher position? 👀

YAAAASSSS BUUUNNNNSSSS!!!! This is so cute and I'm dying to see where you're going with it. ⚘️🥹✨️

Angsty Ram

Super cute buns!!!! Dot looks small compared to Marine, so girl must be tiny. Also I didn’t remember that carrot juice is just normal to drink and was fully convinced Marie was drinking a Bloody Mary

So location-wise, how close is Marnie's hometown to Dogdale, if she winds up working with Snowball? Is there often overlap there- like, would anyone from her community cross county lines to get produce from a farm like Pawberry Acres? Or do they pretty much keep to themselves? Does Marnie start out teaching at majority-rabbit school in her home county and later move farther afield? I'm interested in the series of events that lead to her working at the same school as Snowball- assuming that one has a more varied student body... Jackie and Dot are both so cute! I love how sharply contrasting they are in terms of shape :) Dot especially looks so so soft, my goodness

This is a bit off-topic for this image, my apologies! Was wondering if fuzzbutts has cryptids? Like idk, the yeti, chupracabra, jersey devil, Loch Ness monster? Or perhaps are they also folklore in the fuzzbutt universe? I just ask because I initially read “jackrabbit” as “jackalope” lol. Jackie the jackrabbit is adorable though! I want to know so much about her 🥺

Kenzie Leong

Aww, tiny rabbit with a big ol' dewlap. And I like Jackie, she has big Undine energy.

marsh_beast

Man, I have BIG gender envy for Jackie. Wish I had that much ear to pierce!

Jackie looks like someone who picks fights with hippos and I think that's pretty cool.

ok brace for worldbuilding notes Cottontail County is actually a small district within the city of Dogdale! Dogdale doesn't have nearly as big a canine population as the name implies, it's actually a very diverse city. It was named by it's founder, Baron B. Barkin. One hundred years ago, the land that would become Dogdale was mostly dry Midwest scrubbrush populated by small burrowing animals (eg. rabbits, prairie dogs, gophers, etc). These small critters depended on farming to sustain their families, but a sudden economic downturn, combined with the worst drought in state history, forced many critters to sell their land. Wealthy Zoo York tycoon Baron B. Barkin swooped in to purchase wide swathes of this dirt cheap land. He then used this land to set up more profitable farming ventures, forming lucrative deals with other industry men. Egg and dairy factory-farm facilities were quickly established, attracting a berth of poultry and cattle laborers. Waste products from these factories were used to fertilize the land and make it once more suitable for farming, except this time Baron B. Barkin would not sell to small critters. He sold only to large animals (pigs, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, etc) that he felt would be able to grow larger, more profitable harvests. And so, the little critters were pushed out of their homes and into small pockets of land on the outskirts of the city, known as "burrows". Cottontail County is one of these burrows. Before he died, Barkin built a ranch resort in Dogdale for dogs called Canina Paradisa. With its fresh country air and lush green mountain scenery, it was originally advertised as a utopia for dogs, but has of course since become a vacation destination for animals across the board. Barkin's ruthless enterprising created a massive level of income disparity within Dogdale. Outside the lush green tourist hotspots, the Burrows remain dilapidated and underfunded. Skye's family farm, Pawberry Acres, struggles to this day, because an old small scale strawberry farm cannot compete with massive corporate farms, nor does it successfully capitalize on Dogdale's many visiting tourists. Marnie neither works nor lives in Cottontail County, she's just there visiting friends in this scene. She was forced to move from her small town to pursue her degree, and needed to remain in metropolitan Dogdale because that's where the jobs are. Marnie did originally want to teach in her hometown, but the schools there are so underfunded and bare-bones that there simply are no art teacher positions for Marnie to apply for. Marnie has spent a few years as a woefully underpaid interpreter for deaf folk, and secretly dreams of illustrating children's books, a dream that was never going to take off in her home town. Feeling aimless in her mid-twenties, Marnie applies for and is hired to be an elementary art teacher at Dogdale Deaf Academy. She's somewhat happy at this job, but also stressed out of her mind. She is currently hoping to be promoted to teaching art to the upper grades, who she believes will be easier to manage than her chaotic younger students.

Yes! Cryptids are a thing in FB, and they're especially beloved in small towns. Cottontail County claims to be the original stomping grounds of the elusive, luck-granting "jackalope". Rabbits have entire festivals designed around summoning the jackalope (really just big parties for eating, dancing, and getting drunk), and a popular souvenir item is a cap with jackalope antlers. Jackie owns one! Jack B Nimble is a famous jackalope folklore figure, he is a clever and charming whiskey-drinking rabbit that always outsmarts his enemies.

May we see Marnie’s art some time in the future 🤲🏼 I would like to see her style

Dot and Jackie character's design remind me of Cloudburst and Zipper flash, they are so cute 🥰

The fact that you've thought of stories about how the towns formed is amazing. We love to see it. <3

Yknow, I think I phrased myself badly. I didn't mean cryptids for sure exist as real people, just that the CONCEPT of cryptids exists in FB. Mothman is a folklore creature very popular with bats, raccoons, and other nocturnal animals. Does he ACTUALLY exist? It's possible! Pretty much every time Saint has a couple beers in the woods he swears he encounters a cryptid

WAr

Man this has me 1/2 needing cryptid lore, like is there a community joke that a deer and rabbit cross will be a jackalope? And 1/2 needing an image of Saint tearing through the house swearing he’s seen Bigfoot (Bigpaw?) with a very, very unamused strawberry caring for 5 kids

Hooray for worldbuilding notes!! I love hearing how deeply you've thought into the histories of not just the characters themselves but also!! the locations! the world they live in! It's always so fascinating to hear about.

Matthew Marden

Not the least bit surprising. A number of characters have turned out to be direct translations before.

Scyllarus

Oooo, horrible economic situations shaping entire areas! One of my jams, ngl. Not to be completely derailing, but I wonder what the Pawberry siblings think about their home? We've seen a little bit of political differences between Skye and Summer, but I guess I'm curious if the other pups have opinions (and also Marnie and her best buds!) The situation hits kind of close to home rn - I'm currently living in a developing area in Central Florida so I'm seeing a lot of this sort of thing first hand. It's been bad! It's almost as if pricing people out of an area + moving cheap labor into an area creates tension between the residents and the newcomers! That clearly would never create awful interactions along the lines of politics, race, economics, etc!

Gleeman and Artist

I love the idea of Saint rambling about cryptids. That's funny as hell.

Doxiedreg

Jack b nimble reminds me of el-ahrairah from watership down! Very cool!

Marta Tarasiuk

Does Cottontail County, by any chance, have a local band called "The Beelzebuns"? Or any other punny-bunny bands?

Charlie

Ooookay, now I have to ask... how exactly does egg and dairy industry even works in FB? It sounds like a nightmarish exploitative hell waiting to happen, especially with cows who need to be nursing... Are they on hormones so their body thinks they're pregnant / just had a calf? It's scary to think about a host of impowerish fowl and cattle folk made to just sit and push out the produce day after day after day, likely doing some cleaning and collecting inbetween. I know it can work just fine on a small scale but we all know how workers are often treated in large corporation where profit is all that matters. *shudder*

lopoddity

Cattle do not strictly need to be nursing to produce milk, they can take hormones to trigger lactation. But yes, the egg and dairy industry is a deeply exploitative and abusive industry that invests many billions of dollars into lobbying and advertising to maintain a wholesome, familial image in the eyes of the public. Many modern poultry and cattle find such invasive, underpaid work to be degrading, so corporations just bus in workers from poorer countries. There are some cattle and hen owned companies that claim to have ethical practices, but these claims are often dubious. People who care about ethically-sourced milk and eggs (many do not) typically go to farmers markets to buy from local independent sellers. The prices are much higher for these "organic" products, but at least you know that the hen or cow that made them wasn't made to sit on a grey factory production line, forced to meet daily quotas and skip bathroom breaks.
