A few characters are getting some design/personality updates to make them more fun to draw and write. Savannah has finally become the crusty liddl creacher she was always meant to be! Her personality, like Virgil’s, is greatly influenced by traumatic childhood events, including growing up in a shitty underfunded foster home. As an adult Savannah is combative, sardonic, and barely capable of taking care of herself, let alone taking care of her sick and injured patients. Her approach to work is that of a bored teenage retail worker, which is….not great for a nurse. Fortunately (or unfortunately), Sav works at a sketchy underfunded hospital that’s too desperate for staff to fire her over a few itty bitty cases of serious medical malpractice.

i cant fix her but whatever's going on with her is much more interesting than trying

Angsty Ram

I love how she looks is incredible and super stylised. She is truly a gremlin and I love her and I know if I met her she’d make me cry.

Rumpeltyltskyn

Oh god as a person who works with horrible nurses I Hate Her Now

Oscuraz

Wonder if she still has that chaotic relationship with Jude? 👀

Yvette Winters

Why does she work as a nurse if she hates it?

Violetattack

watching her go from a rosemary export to now has been such a wild journey, I love where she's ended up in her slow slide into crusty dysfunction ghjhghjk

Doxiedreg

Oh no she became full gremlin I take it her and jude's relationship is uh..a lot less wholesome now. Also curious to see who else is getting redesigned! I love your art and characters so much im gonna eat it all and download it directly to my brain! Just augh your writing is excellent, it always leaves me wanting more!

She was discouraged away from the field she actually wanted to go into. Upon aging out of foster care, Savannah and Virgil were effectively homeless, with no means of escaping poverty. Their primary childhood caretaker offered to let them live with her, and even offered to help them apply for college, but for Savannah she'd only help on the condition Savannah go into a nice, "proper" career for young ladies- teaching, nursing, or childcare. Savannah at first refused, but had no other real options, so she settled on nursing because the pay looked promising. She did at least TRY to be a decent nurse, at least in the beginning- but the insane workload and rude patients quickly wore her down. Her apathy is a defense mechanism to protect her from accepting 1.) She's not good at this no matter how hard she tries and 2.) She's stuck doing it indefinitely.

Dragonseeker

I support women’s wrongs, she is perfect and is allowed a little medical malpractice as a treat

Callihan

I absolutely love seeing your characters grow and change! I think my favorite thing about you as an artist and writer is that you're so willing to let your characters expand. It's so inspiring to see you rework them in ways large and small, because it shows that art is a process revolving around what's fun for you as a writer. And it's fun for me to watch, because I love your characters and I love watching them become more and more themselves!!

MiyaLaFlorDorada

Wow...she's like looking the average nurse of any public health care center 🤣 No, but really even doctors, no, EVERYONE is like this in any public system here in my country, that's why many prefer save money, and go to a private but affordable clinics, also many have fonasa so there is a discount. I have meet many people that don't like their job and just choose it because it was the only thing they could do, but even so in the medical field, along the way many people that actually loved their profession became cold and numb to "endure the ugly side" but still. I remember one time I was in so much pain but and I have to wait for an exam and the lady on the desk, oh and by the way in a private clinic, she told "I understand that it hurts but your cries and whines disturb the other patients, and it doesn't help to your pain, can you please keep it down? " My mom always almost kill her with her eyes and the other people people give her angry looks and compassion ones for me. In public hospital is worse, there have been many cases of pregnant women that have given birth in the bathroom, people with horrible cuts, burns, broken bones, that are forse to wait to be able to get help, yeah they can enter first but still waiting 20-30 min is a lo, and people have died. The organization is horrible in every type of public system. Even so my heart go to the actually good professionals that have to stand horrible patients, with bad working materials, and don't get the payment and respect they deserve.

lopoddity

You get it! Way too many people saying "ma'am you can't amputate that" and "saline goes in IV drips, not soup" and "you can't smoke in the pediatric ward". Like god forbid a woman try to do ANYTHING

KaeWolfe

Really curious what her relationship is like with Jude now! I love this gremlin woman. If she wasn't a nurse, what would she do instead? :o

Strixcaliber

I can fix her <3 myfavorite character archetype

Fenn

“I can fix her” I can make her worse

lopoddity

She's got a real knack for engineering, but the foster home treated her fondness for taking appliances/electronics/engines apart and putting them back together as a nuisance. Savannah was frequently reprimanded growing up and made to fit a very specific version of femininity. She and Jude exist in a sort of on-again off-again toxic yuri symbiosis. Like a tiny plover bird picking scrap chunks from between a crocodile's teeth, they exist in beautiful, gross harmony

Murkydepths

Going to miss good nurse Savannah a little. I had a really scary experience at hospital once and the nurses kept me together, they were really kind. In a way they helped me more than the doctors because they listened and calmed me down and were there whenever I needed them. I know others have had awful experiences with god-complex nurses, it seems to be a profession that attracts both extremes - the best and the worst. It's hideous how underfunded and underpaid medical workers are

lopoddity

Pretty much the same. They live together and annoy each other, but they are pack-bonded and reluctant to leave each other to go about their own lives. Savannah is slightly more permissive and patient with Virgil than she is with other folk. This is because Virgil is one of the few people in her life that doesn't judge her or try to change her. Their bond is one of shared survival, growing up they sort of inadvertently learned to develop individual strengths to fill in the others weaknesses. Virgil is passive and got bullied a lot, so Savannah became loud, aggressive, and willing to fight to defend them both. Savannah is curt, Virgil overexplains. Virgil struggles to lie, Savannah can lie smooth as silk. Savannah chews furniture, Virgil got to be pretty handy with varnish and sandpaper so they wouldn't get in trouble growing up. They beatbox together, they do stupid dance moves in the kitchen together, they've eaten out of a dumpster together. Their relationship isn't perfect, but there's a genuine sibling bond buried in there.

lopoddity

I'm glad those nurses could be there for you! I've also had great experiences with kind nurses. Savannah is not a god-complex nurse, however. She is an incompetent, bored, deeply frustrated nurse. She's not me trying to make a statement on nursing, nor me trying to highlight bad nurses that exist in the real world. This is me giving Savannah's character more meat. I noticed I tend to subconsciously write my female characters as less flawed than the men, more pleasant and pretty and palatable. This is because I've found that audiences are often...less forgiving to flawed women than they are to men. Pandora being whiny and melodramatic earned me hate mail and harassment, while Moondancer's fans didn't bat an eyelash at him being a hateful, cowardly murderer. Female characters get picked apart, while males are accepted and always taken in good faith. It really affected my character writing for a while. :/ Savannah grew up in the exact same awful environment as Virgil and had her only parental figure die suddenly. So why is Virgil the big weirdo, while Savannah is just a vaguely-surly-but-mostly-nice-and-well-adjusted nurse? Because she was a flat character, that's why. :/ Because I was too nervous to push her character the way I should've. I'm guilty of doing this with more than a few characters and I'm trying to rectify it now. Flat characters are boring, Sav was boring. Savannah's journey is now about a brittle, flawed person trying to learn kindness and integrity, rather than just automatically knowing these things from the start. I'm sorry if you miss nice nurse Sav- if it makes you feel better, both Biscuit and Carmen are perfectly competent and kindly medical doctors that have helped thousands of people. :)

Bigsmile

Ok, yeah, I forgot about the weird Moondancer apologist thing. Media literacy is dead and or was never born

Melody Williamson

She reminds me of the doctor who extracted my wisdom teeth. Didn't say a word to me, didn't smile or nothing. Just got her supplies, put me under and got to business. Wasn't even there when I woke up. Never saw her again 😂

tricoloryn

i already liked savannah before but now i'm havign a Category Five Gay Moment over her

knickknacks

Would I be a little scared if she was the nurse in my waiting room? yeah. do I love her? yeah again. All congratulations to Sav on her completed journey into crustdom!

lopoddity

Catch her eating a stale cheez-it she found underneath her boob

Gleeman and Artist

You're right about how people treat flawed female characters vs the male ones. I've seen it happened with way too many fandom sadly. I'm glad you're writing female characters like that though. I tend to love female characters who are deeply flawed so I'm glad to see it!

Res Hound

Oh this is a fantastic upgrade. This version of Sav def gives more sides to explore. I can't wait to see Virgil. Has this version of Sav dated Jude?

Nyanpasu

‘I can fix her’ Yeah? I can not change a thing about her and have her fix me! Does she still have a soft spot for her late father btw?

Saba Saeidi

a weird tid bit but i really like how you stylise Fuzzbutts feet, I've noticed lately you've really made grounds on how this worlds anatomy works and your style for drawing anthro animals. Its neat! Also LOVE her new face shape! Long snoots have always been a fav design element for me and its about time we got a grungy depressed lady in the cast. Depression sometimes means you don't find the care for basic hygiene and i appreciate you willing to show that for a female character! Sav is still one of my fav designs, shea a gorgeous striped hyena and that doesn't get diminished just cuz shes grungy now, girl just needs to learn some better coping mechanisms and how to be self fulfilling. Interested to see her new arc and more sibling art! I wonder what an interaction with her and any of your poor+accident prone characters would go, haha, maybe thats how Jude and Sav met? Motor accident (i know you had something planned for them before but dunno if you planned on changing it) Maybe Tibbs has had run ins with her in her clinic when he was a young chop shopper Also, curious how its pointed out specifically that she hates her mom, as i assumed she'd left her life completely? Unless its just that vague "that woman left me and is the cause of my shitty life" kind of feeling instead of actually meeting. Would be interesting if their professions ever meant they've bumped into each other, duno if morges do that NJKAENJ

Robo87

There are two Steve Irwins inside of me One of them is looking at a clear disaster lesbian and going “ohhh danger danger danger!!” The other, louder, Steve is going “ISNT SHE A BEAUTY??? 😍😍😍😍 “

Murkydepths

This is a really good point! I'm sorry, I realise now I sounded like I disproved of the changes. I really don't, and I love your expanding of characters and in this case yeah making them more flawed so they can have more development in their story. It makes perfect sense for her considering Savannahs situation. I'm excited to see how her new characterisation plays out!

marsh_beast

It’s hypocritical of me to ask this, considering my anxiety keeps me tied to my first, current, and ONLY job, but… if Savannah’s work makes her so deeply unhappy, why doesn’t she leave?

lopoddity

Yep! I'm working on Jude's design so I can draw them interacting. :3

lopoddity

Yes! She loved her dad more than anything, she has a tiny handful of possessions from him and photos of them together that she allows NOBODY to touch. They are treated with ULTIMATE reverence and care.

lopoddity

It's hard to leave a job that makes you unhappy, I'm in the process of working up the nerve to do so. Sav is depressed, anxious, and not at all confident in her ability to find something else. She has an associates degree in nursing, which is very specific- she can't really land a different career with it. Changing jobs would either require her taking a lower-paying entry position somewhere (fast food, retail, temp work, etc) or going back to school to study for something else. And even if she does successfully jump ship, there's no guarantee she'll be happy in a new line of work. She could be even more miserable. She could end up with a pile of student loan debt and nothing to show for it. She could flunk out and end up homeless again. When Savannah thinks about it too much she becomes paralyzed, which makes her even more frustrated at work. Besides, work exhausts her to the point she's too drained to job hunt- she either comes home and collapses in bed, or zones out playing video games and watching TV.

marsh_beast

Ah, that makes sense. She and I are in similar boats, then. I’ve only known new!Savannah for the past few hours but I think she may be one of my favorites.

lopoddity

Thanks! Please don't apologize! I was just trying to clarify my thought process, not make it seem like you weren't allowed to dislike the change, or miss her old version.

Kenzie Leong

She could be worse. She could be making tiktoks about it.

lopoddity

I feel social media has popularized a very specific sort of nurse archetype- the kind that makes tactless tiktoks, is antivaxx, was the mean girl in high school, etc. And I feel that people are assuming that's what I'm going for with Savannah's character. This is not the case. Sav isn't making tiktoks about her patients, she's watching a reindeer patient shedding bloody antler velvet and going "hey anybody gonna eat that" and not waiting for an answer

Kenzie Leong

Oh yeah I definitely get that! That's sort of what I meant by "could be worse", like, clearly she's a bad nurse but at least she's not this specific subset of bad nurse. For all Sav's flaws she is definitely not a mean girl.

lopoddity

Hmmmm but now I'm tempted to make that specific subset of bad nurse. XD Maybe a coworker of Sav's that takes selfies with her recently deceased patients with sadface crying filters and links to her essential oil online store

Curio Blue

I would love to have some background on how Sav and her mother interact. Does Zara care at all about her daughter? Did she help out at all financially, or help at least pay for foster care? What does all that look like? How does Sav feel about it all?

Charlie

Does this Sav still plays with the band? Seems likely she no longer has neither time nor energy to spare...

Bigsmile

That sounds like something Gigi's mom would do.

AsTheJayFlies

jesus christ that is some weird al “last verse of tacky” bullshit. “I would live tweet at funerals, take selfies with the deceased”

lopoddity

Yes, she does! It’s one of the few ways she can express herself and have fun in a healthy way. :3

lopoddity

I’m hoping to do a sketch dump on Zara and Savannah’s relationship when I have time. Zara….cares about Sav in the same way she cares about the welfare of any child. Savannah is Tim’s daughter, and Tim was Zara’s friend. While she never signed up to be a parent, she felt she had to do SOMETHING when Tim died, she couldn’t just leave little Savannah all alone at the police station. She took Savannah home and attempted to be her caregiver. Unfortunately Zara just isn’t any good with kids, especially an angry, grieving child who resisted Zara’s calm discussions about death and instead expressed her pain through acting out in school and destroying Zara’s expensive home. Eventually Zara, fed up and frustrated, surrenders Savannah to state care, trusting that Sav will now have access to skilled caregivers equipped to deal with traumatized children. Zara discussed her rationale with Savannah and even asked if Savannah would like a choice in the matter, but a six-year-old isn’t that capable of acting in their best interest. Savannah shuts down and shrugs. Behind the feigned apathy, she is furious and wounded that Zara would give her away, but she refuses to beg to stay. She resolves to “get tough” and survive all on her own in foster care. She does not forgive Zara for many years and ignores her attempts to reach out, until Savannah is an adult and Zara reveals that she is her mother.

Lammergayier

God damn, this hit me like a truck. I don't think Zara was Entirely in the wrong especially because she's not a person who is especially equipped to handle a child with Sav's needs, but at the same time if I was in Sav's shoes.... Yeah honestly I'd probably hate Zara for a long time too. This is a very complex situation and a very well-written one at that

owlcoholik

I’m curious, are some of her more “positive” traits maybe going to Jude? I just realized those two could have an interesting contrast with both being predators but one from a rich background and the other from a poor background. I also just remembered that Jude was adopted too, so she could honestly be like a more well adjusted version of Savannah in a lot of ways, even though they have similar experiences the different levels of support might explain why Jude could be the optimist to Savannah’s pessimist. Or I could be overthinking someone else’s furry lesbians and I could be totally wrong. Either way fun to speculate!

PrairieGhosted

yeas baby...bring on the yucky women . womens wrongs. (genuinely interested in seeing the character interactions w her revised personality !!! ) also gosh as someone stuck in "this job is awful for me and im in burnout hell but is it even possible to leave" but its a caretaking position i resonate so hard w her lol . i keep myself honest on doing good work for the sake of the ppl i take care of's wellbeing but we do Not have Support financially or structurally from higher up to maintain that so its just coming out of my own cup & theres soooo many ppl i work w who do phone it in & i like...get it. (i dont agree w it bc it hurts ppl but the blame is rlly rlly w the system) I feel like the shit you end up seeing from a system thats set up to fail like that can be so traumatizing too, i cant imagine that helps w her emotional detachment cause it does seem like its a long held survival method for her from childhood esp in foster care....and she doesnt have a full cup to pour from (not excusing it lol but appreciate that for her writting + motivation) anyway love her + understand her. yucky woman

Ren

I love how… scruggnly she looks. I can’t explain but I love the sloped jaw, and the long dropped ears adding a balance to her face. She looks so mean and tired and so so GOOD. These are some of my favorite type of character designs it fits her so perfect. God I can’t wait to see art of her Jude and her and Virgil together. I love how well you can make each design look so different and unique but the characters never look out of place next to each other. They all flow together so well, personality and design wise. Her MANE is so pretty one I love it even if it’s probably dusty and dirty dragging on the floor all day. *** also love the addition of the oral habit, idk if it’s purposely related to her adhd but I to have an oral/chewing habit due to my audhd. As a kid my favorite thing to chew was those cheap rubber wrist bands that every little origination passes out when they visited your school or what not. As an adult I try to substitute with gum but still unfortunately have the bad habit of chewing on my nails . It’s rough out here
