These came in this week, and I reviewed them as quickly as possible. I wanted to share a little of the history of some of these colors, while still making this a shorter video! Music and chapters aren't in yet, but shownotes are!

A Wash of It's Former Self- Winsor & Newton's "New" Revival Colors

These were purchased directly from Winsor and Newton, and are now available through other retailers, probably at a much lower price. I highly recommend you shop around for a best price, as Winsor and Newton's site is very overpriced. If you're in South East Louisiana, David's Art Center in Metairie has the 6 color set for under $40. Also available on: Shownotes: Full Shownotes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13yKjX4Ya2nDj27ABa1_bAjcR2DYYmwt4bMkdf1Ftkaw/edit?usp=sharing Full shownotes include historical notes and relevant links & citations. I just didn't have the room to include all that here. Field's Orange- Permanence A, Series 2 PO67, Semi Transparent Lightfast not given Cinnabar Green- Permanence AA, Series 2, PY138, PG36 Transparent Lightfast not given Tyrian Purple- Permanence B, SEries 2, PV37, PR202, Transparent, Lightfast not given Ultramarine Ash Permanence A, SEries 3, PG23, PB29, Transparent, Lightfast I Mineral Grey Permanence A, Series 1, PBk19, PW5, PB29, Semi Transparent, Lightfast I Ostwald Grey- Permanence A Series 1, PBk6, PW5, PY42, Opaque, Lightfastness I Winsor & Newton provided no historical context for us to learn about these paints, which is disappointing and odd; they could have made this a whole THING with revival-inspired packaging and a booklet and videos. Joseph came to the rescue and found this article from the London Graphic Center (which Winsor and NEwton totally should link) and will use it as my starting point https://www.londongraphics.co.uk/blog/A-Tribute-to-Timeless-Artistry-The-Winsor-and-Newton-Revival-Collection Field’s Orange: https://tinyurl.com/mvpa8ze5 Pyrazoloquinazolone Orange- PO67 Why was Field's Orange discontinued? The original form was toxic. The revised form is still available and fairly common. Tyrian Purple: https://tinyurl.com/ywxjyc9n PV37- Dioxazine Purple (https://artistpigments.org/pigments/PV37) PR202- Quinacridone Crimson (https://artistpigments.org/pigments/PR202) Also known as Royal Purple, Imperial Purple, and Imperioa Dye (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrian_purple) Why was Tyrian Purple Discontinued: Extremely expensive Lost recipes for extracting and processing Labor intensive https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20231122-tyrian-purple-the-lost-ancient-pigment-that-was-more-valuable-than-gold?quot The process for making the original dye is fairly disgusting https://allthatsinteresting.com/tyrian-purple Ultramarine Ash: PB29- Ultramarine Blue (https://artistpigments.org/pigments/PB29/technical) PG23- Green earth, terre verte (https://artistpigments.org/pigments/PG23/technical) https://tinyurl.com/3j9uffxn Why was Ultramarine Ash Discontinued? My guess is because we synthasize ultramarine blue, and have a much richer, more vibrant version available. This was probably a cheaper option made from a byproduct. Mineral Grey: PBk19 PW5 PB29 https://artistpigments.org/brands/winsor-and-newton-professional-water-colour/qrogh-mineral-grey https://www.londongraphics.co.uk/winsor-newton-artists-watercolour-5ml-mineral-grey Davy's Grey from Winsor & Newton is similar (PBK19, PW4, Pbk6)- https://handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterw.html Semi transparent grey with a greenish tone that offers ready solutions to softer toning as well as granular textures. Why was this color discontinued? This is actually a popular color with paint companies! Sherwin Williams, Behr Ostwald Grey: PBk6- Carbon Black PW5- Lithopone PY42- Yellow Iron Oxide https://artistpigments.org/brands/winsor-and-newton-professional-water-colour/dot_chart https://tinyurl.com/5fzzmypf Opaque warm grey perfect for toning, providing a soft granulating texture that mixes beautifully with other colours. Why was this color discontinued? It sounds like it wasn't- it's a popular color but perhaps not one commonly available premixed for watercolor. Better ideas for a revival set: Winsor and Newton has been around FOREVER, what about a recreation of their first set? Or their most popular set? Or one of their early laquered boxes? More historical colors- like one from each centry or one from each era Or recreate a famous Victorian watercolorist's favorite color palette I recommend that you skip this set. Many of these colors are already available under different names and other brands (Imperial purple, for example), so it may be easier to just pick up the colors you like from other sources. I wish dot sheets had been available at NAMTA- I would've saved myself $60 and just bought Tyrian Purple and maybe Otswald Grey. Chapters: Music:
