Simptap (Arrtx) Acrylic Markers

48 Colors:

Getting these started:

The clear view window is helpful to make sure you're mixing your paint enough.

The brush is surprisingly soft and squishy without being too floppy- it might not be fiber, might be a type of foam?

Caps, particularly skin tones, don't match the skin tones, so swatching and having a swatch map is important.

The plungers are SO STIFF; they're really hard on my hands.

Brushes feel like a stiff foam that may go mushy if pushed too far.

Shaking isn't just about mixing the paint, it helps prime, so make sure you shake A LOT

On Canson XL:

You can see the colors separating out in the skin tones- it happens THAT fast, and that had happened in the brush.

Very easy to fill a larger area

These are a lot of fun for sketchbook noodling, you can work faster than with the bullet nibs, and cover more area.

Acrylic Markers on Tote Bag

Challenging to keep paint flow up to cover without it dripping all over the place

Keep in mind we probably can't really wash this, and i wouldn't recc doing this on a stretchy fabric- fabric paints have plasticizers in them to help them stretch and move, this may crack

Painting on a totebag is going to eat up your markers- it drains paint and it beats up the brush. If you can prep the surface with maybe modpodge or clear gesso, that will make the fabric less absorbative- we prime canvases that are unprimed as well, so it makes sense that this happens. You could also use fabric paint, as this paint may flake and crack with use

I found that 'stretching' or supporting the bag with clips and cardboard helps A LOT- if you don't support your canvas, it's going to wiggle all over the place. I can't really see how painting on a tote bag is really that different from a canvas, or the precautions/preps you'd take with a canvas.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

I like these a lot better than the bullet tip or plastic nib acrylic markers

Easier to cover large areas

More painterly effect

Super easy to use in a sketchbook

Unlikely to tear heavier paper up

Fairly easy to do small fine areas as well

Cons:

The fiber tips do eventually break down, and there are no replacements

Because these are 'opaque' they've added optical brighteners to kinda bulk up smaller pigments and make them more opaque, so it's harder to get those darker darks or strong contrast with these

Because of the above, it's also harder to do glazes or color adjusting techniques. You CAN, its not impossible, but it's way more challenging and not all colors will do it

These need to be shaken and pumped CONSTANTLY, particularly on unprimed fabrics
