Back advance, lead indicator on back, Rotring branded clip, matte body finish
I've mentioned before that metal drafting and mechanical pencils have ruined my hands due to their lack of give- this inspired me to start reviewing plastic-bodied pencils regularly. But since this one's been in my collection for years, I wanted to give it a chance.
Writing Test:
To no one's surprise, this thing is leagues better than the Visuaclick. Despite being a metal body pencil, it's far more comfortable to hold than it's cheaper cousin, although still a bit uncomfortable for me. If I were to regularly use this pencil, I'd have to pop a grip on it to spare my hands. Writes smoothly, and the included lead is soft and easy to use. The build quality feels solid- it doesn't feel like it'll shake apart. It's a heavy pencil though, which may cause hand fatigue, but seems well balanced.
Drawing Test:
Blue Lead:
The Rotring 600 draws so much better than the Rotring VisuClick- everything about the pencil handles tighter and is better built. I recommend a loose hand for this one, and you may find it's not really the best choice for sketching, but may serve you well as a drafting pencil. I would put it about on par, personally, with the GraphGear 1000, although a head to head comparison wouldn't be fair, as I'd used the GraphGear 1000 for years, so my 1000 has seen a lot of wear and tear, and may not be able to compete with a 'new' pencil.
NO blue lead breakages.
Included Graphite:
A smooth sketcher but your hand fatigues quickly and starts to cramp. Could be the weight, could be the grip, could be the fact that it's inflexible. Definitely not a good pencil for school or daily sketching.
The Verdict:
I generally do not recommend drafting pencils for sketching- I realize they look a lot cooler than your average mechanical pencil, and just reek of 'real artist', but these things will wreck your hands. The Rotring 600 is well built with a beautiful matte finish and definitely looks cool. It lives up to the Rotring name and is a well built, high-quality drafting pencil.
This pencil is heavy, stiff in the hand, and a bit clunky. These types of knurled metal grips have a tendency of biting into your hand after hours of drawing (learned the hard way at a convention), so if you insist on using the Rotring 600 as a daily driver drawing pencil, I highly recommend you slap a grip on this puppy.
