The Packaging:
The 12 piece sets come in plastic snap boxes.
The Markers:
The caps look like they should post but don't. The grips make them a bit easier to grab and remove, so they might be a good choice for artists with grip issues. Cap has a notch to prevent rolling, but these still roll a bit.
Marker body screening is fairly minimal- a designator for the fine tipped in and brush, the logo, and a B designator indicating that these are brush markers. Graph'it bullet and chisel markers are black, Graph'it Brush and Line markers are white. Marker color name and number is on the barcode sticker, as well as on the color chipped caps.
Compared to Other Markers:
Smaller color range than most alcohol markers, including the Blick Studio Brush Marker. Blick Studio Brush are cheaper, and have a foam rubber brush, comparable to Copic.
Comparison Markers:
Tombow ABT
Prismacolor
Blick Studio Brush Marker
Copic Ciao
Copic Sketch
Graph’it Brush
Ohuhu Brush
Caps feature the color code, but not the color name, fairly unusual as MOST marker companies have both on their caps.
Head to Head color Comparison with Ohuhu Brush: A lot of similar colors between the two sets, and markers handle almost the same. The brush looks identical to me, but of course, one has a fine point nib, and the other has a chisel nib.
Swatching:
Swatched in my old faithful, the Strathmore Mixed Media sketchbook.
Swatching:
Colors seem a little prone to bleeding. Marker is really juicy- lays down a lot of ink
Swatched the Comics set first, then openstock markers
Blender Compatibility:
Blenders tested:
Rubbing Alcohol
Copic
Graphit
Blick Studio
Artist Loft
Most reaction: Rubbing alcohol, Artist Loft
These should work with your existing marker collection.
Blending Ball:
As stated, these markers are pretty juicy, you won’t have issues with streakiness if you work in a couple layers. Markers are very easy to blend because they’re fairly reactive.
The Fieldtest:
Used with a light hand, the brush seems to work decently well, although if you're heavy handed, it will get mushy on you
The collar on the fine tip end really throws me, almost every other brand puts it on the brush, so it's flying in the face of a known convention.
Good inkflow, no issues with streaking. Brush doesn't try to 'grab' the paper.
The 'comics' color selection feels a bit limited- a couple skintones and then a few high chroma colors, which would work ok for spot color but would be difficult to blend out.
Very easy to get a smooth, clean flat fill with these. Can be pretty bleedy, esp with the brush
These things will roll right off the desk
Once you saturate the paper, these take awhile to dry
If you use an overblending technique (like with the roses) they'll bleed out
Blending wet into wet, you can get some really watercolor-like effects (small purple flowers) because these are so juicy and prone to blending, this probably only works on thirstier papers
Pros:
Refillable
Replacable brush nibs
Available openstock
Available in various sized sets
Cons:
Price- these are super similar to the Ohuhu Brush markers, but more than double the price.
Very prone to blending- may be difficult to control if you do a lot of layering
Availability- you wont see these at most big box brick and mortar art stores, so if you need a quick refill, you’ll have to order it and wait
Fiber brush tip, while one of the better ones, may be prone to fraying
Very juicy and prone to bleeding, especially on thinner papers
