This is an early access review!Earlier this year, I took a look at the original Spectrum Noir Triblend markers.  I REALLY liked the concept for these- many marker companies promise perfect (or easier) blending, and I felt like Spectrum Noir actually delivered.  Each TriBlend Marker is really three colors in one.

But all is not perfect in this art supply Utopia.  There were some cons with the Triblend markers that while I loved them, made them difficult for me to recommend wholeheartedly to other artists.

Triblend Brush

Just about the same as the triblend bullet tip, but with a brush

The packaging:

The Brush packaging is grey, whereas the bullet tipped is black.  Brush Packaging says Brush, and also includes a graphic of a brush, as compared to the graphic of a bullet nib.

The markers:

Both have the colors inside the marker listed on the 'front', as well as on each segment on the back. The color group or theme is listed on the cap, so if you're matching this against your existing SN collection, go by the color codes.

Both have color caps to indicate the color at that stage of the marker, neither have caps that post, and both have the color name

Compared to other alcohol markers:

Triblend Brush

Tri Blend Bullet

Copic Original

Copic Sketch

Copic Ciao

Neopiko Color

Kurecolor

Blick Studio

Ohuhu

Prismacolor

Sketchmarker Brush

Tombow ABT Pro

Brush Tipped

Compared to fiber brush markers like the Ohuhu and Tombow ABT Pro, the SN doesn't seem like it's fiber.

Bullet Tipped:

Most of the bullet tip options are similar to the SN bullet tip- compressed fiber- but the Kurecolor and Deleter have PN (plastic nibbed) fine points

Swatch Test

I am now certain these are fiber tipped.

And I'm already noticing some of the spidering and bleeding JUST from these swatches, and this wasn't an issue with the bullet nibs.

Swatching Bullet Tips

These don't have as much bleeding as their brush counterparts, but as bullet nibs, they're scratchy, and it takes longer to fill an area.  More difficult to saturate an area with color too.

Intermarker reactability:

Reactions to Rubbing Alcohol, Ohuhu, Copic, Artist Loft, and Prismacolor, with most reaction to rubbing alcohol, Ohuhu, and Copic

Blending Demonstration:

Brush DEFINITELY helps with blending, as inkflow is much improved so you're not scrubbing as much.  Easier to go from color to color, less reliant on building up tones.

Brush is a bit scrubby with some of the colors (like 'fair skin blend')

Head to Head coloring comparison with Bullet tipped

They handle color differently.  The Brush tips are prone to overblending, so you're more likely to blend a darker color back with the lighter color.  The bullet tips are a bit dry, so you're more likely to build up your lighter color til it blends in better with the darker color.

Blending Balls:

Brush:

Brush tends to get dry when coloring 'large' areas

The Verdict:

Pros:

Three markers in one

Faster to color large areas than the bullet tips

Very blendable

Could be a good 'first' marker

Cons:

The fiber brush tips are basically the same as any cheap fiber brush tip- on par with Milo Art, worse than Ohuhu.

Markers are both TOO juicy and too dry

Some of the colors in the blends are weird, like the blend selection for "Pale Pink"

I really wanted to like these, and I'm pretty disappointed in them.

I buy almost everything I review on this channel, with a few notable exceptions, but even though I was an early champion of the Spectrum Noir Triblend markers, I'm glad I purchased these rather than Spectrum Noir senpai noticing me and sending me a pack.

I work hard on these reviews, and I love making them, but they are ONLY possible thanks the support of my husband and my Patrons on Patreon.
