This is an early access video!Hey Artnerds!  I saw this absolutely adorable Portable Painter Micro for sale at my local favorite art supply store, David's Art Supply, in Metairie Louisiana.   I just couldn't resist buying it and reviewing it for yall- it was way too tiny and cute to skip.  I've reviewed a lot of travel palettes on the channel- does this one measure up?  If you read the title, you already know the answer!

Portable Painter Micro

Originally on IndieGogo: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/portable-painter-micro#/

Purchased at David's Art Supply for $19.99

Promises a credit card-sized Watercolor palette- isn't accounting for bulk

Six half pans

Can also take whole pans

Works with tube or pan watercolors

Lots of room to mix

Fill it yourself

Recently we looked at another fill it yourself travel palette- that one has 16 generously sized wells but is quite a bit larger

Portable Painter has two products currently listed- the portable painter classic (12 half pans) and the micro. https://www.portablepainter.com/

Inside is the Portable Painter Micro, some documentation, and a plastic sheet

The documentation explains how to open this thing.

The product itself is white matte plastic- feels fairly sturdy.

I'll give them this- this is one of the smallest travel palettes I've ever purchased- I've made several Altoids tin palettes in the past, but this one offers more potential mixing surfaces.  And I like that it has its own water container.

Assembles and disassembles very quickly

That T grip has me a bit concerned though- there's no real comfortable way for me to hold it, and I have small hands.  A wrist strap might be easier?  At least it lays flat.  An adjustable right might also work.

This thing is stupidly cute

Half pans are supposed to be removable with a palette knife-- mine won't come out, but this knife is kinda flimsy.  About the same size as regular, standard half pans, although these do seem to be proprietary- I won't know until I can actually pop them out and see.

Want to do a CMYK inspired palette

Cyan (Pthalo Blue Yellow Shade- Holbein)

Magenta (Quin Opera- Holbein)

Azo Yellow (M Grahams)

Ivory Black (Winsor and Newton)

French Ultramarine (Qor)

Aliz Crim (Winsor and Newton

In House Field test-

Testing

Water capacity, mixing capacity, ease of use, ease of assembly

Such a small amount of water muddies quickly, and such small mixing surfaces are quickly consumed unless wiped frequently.

The Petit Painter seems like it'd work really well for like, super small sketchbooks or micro studies, but it would be difficult to mix up enough paint for say, a wash, unless you used the wash cup.

Cleaning is a bit more challenging, if the wash cup is full, you really need to remove it on a stable surface to avoid spilling.  I can't imagine balancing this on like, my knee.  It's also VERY easy to pollute your other colors, which while not the biggest deal, is something to keep in mind.
