It's been awhile~!  Early access has been a bit stagnant between moving, Hurricane Ida, and moving.  Unfortunately, while we get the house set up, it's going to be really challenging to juggle Lilliputian Living (sharing it over on Twitter this year!~) and early access reviews and tutorials, but hopefully once things settle down and we find a routine, I can pick up the pace.  As always, these reviews and tutorials are made possible thanks to YOU- and I really appreciate it!Shownotes:Get Your Own: https://amzn.to/3iOKiXL

Did a lot of experimenting to find something that might work for me.  I'm not a graphite wash, or line and wash, sort of artist, but I do like moody colors- I loved the Boku Undo Sumiesque, the Van Gogh Dusk Colors, ect, and I enjoy spots of intense granulation.  Initially, I had hoped these would allow for erasing when dry- they do not.

Colors in this set:

Autumn Brown

Russet

Meadow

Green Grey

Slate Green

Ocean Blue

Steel Blue

Dark Indigo

Aubergine

Juniper

Port

Graphite Grey

I started with an underpainting using the Derwent Inktense half pans, bc the Graphitint do not have a lot of color to offer, and turn muddy fast.  I am opting to use the Graphitint as a glaze to add some grit and interest.

Graphitint doesn't really get dark on its own, so to get the really dark shadows, I'll need to mix in some black from the Derwent Inktense set.  Mostly it seems to offer a bit of sparkle- the graphite.

The Graphitint really obscures the lineart.  Ths was originally dip pen inked with Paynes Grey, I'm going to have to reink with Black for clarity.

I started with reinforcing the glow effects using Yellow and some of the greens, working wet into wet and blending.  I also started adding layers of Graphitint to her skirt, cape, and hat, focusing on Indigo, the purple, and the reddish brown.  I allowed it to dry fully.

My goal is to do some local shading using local colors first, then do atmospheric shading while also mixing in some black to get those darker shades.  While I am able to accomplish this sort of layers, it's muddy and unimpressive- the Graphitint and my usual artstyle are not a good match.  Maybe something light and monochrome, like my Boku Undo pieces?

This is just kinda a muddy mess to me.  I can't build up layers the way I'd want to.  Color gets obscured.  Even introducing black doesn't really do a whole lot.  I am sure there are better ways to handle Graphitint, this was probably too heavy-handed, but at least I can demonstrate what to try to avoid, what these cannot do well.

Graphitint really pollutes the water and rinse cup, so be sure to rinse your cup thoroughly before using other watercolors

I really think I prefer super granulating watercolors, like the Van Gogh Dusk Colors, or the Lunar colors, or the Supervision Super granulating colors, to the Graphitint.  There isn't enough of what I want (delicacy, or granulation, or ability to build up contrast, or the ability to erase, or transparency) and there's too much of what I don't really value (graphite sheen, indelibility once dry).

Pros:

Indelible once dry

Beautiful muted colors

Cons:

Graphite is too finely granulated, so it just makes it muddy- different amounts of granulation would make it more visually interesting

Verdict:

So far, it's not for me.  I haven't yet hit a technique that I feel resonates with these unusual watercolors, but Ill keep trying.
