Opening the Tubes:

Several were explody

Swatching:

These are really really weak

Color Mixing:

Atomic mixes are really weak

Optical Glazes:

Not that impressive either; really klinda muddy

Mini Field Test:

Painting the ice cream cone from the Brea Reese Project Guide

The pencil and eraser are both fine, the paper is definitely not a good watercolor paper, and the paints are kinda crap, but honestly, it's also kinda fun.  I enjoy just sorta relaxing, vibing out, and drawing from reference, messing around.

Honestly though, their directions are terrible- if you aren't already familiar with watercolor and drawing, this kit isn't really going to serve as a good introduction.  But hey, you're on youtube right now, so you know where to go to find watercolor tutorials!

Would yall like me to put together some easy paint together projects that aren't so cartoony and figure based?  Lemme know- if there's interest, I'd be happy to.

The colors in this set are really weak- not a lot of pigment, a lot of extender, so you're only going to get so much depth of color.  I've also been running through the colors pretty fast, since they're so weak.  These kinda remind me of the Masters Touch watercolors from Hobby Lobby that I reviewed a couple years ago.  The paper board that's provided isn't absorbent at all, so you're basically waiting for the water to evaporate off the paper, and it's pretty lightweight, so it tends to skid around.  That said, it hasn't buckled or curled.

The brushes are really bad, yall keep seeing me using the flat because it's better than the larger round, which is more prone to dripping and scrubbing off past layers of paint.

In the swatches, these leave a chalky residue once dry.

Pros and cons

Pros:

At Tuesday Morning, these are really pretty cheap, but even on Amazon, they aren't expensive- at the time of this review, they are 34% off at 12.42 (https://amzn.to/3VG66Fr)

Come with almost everything you need to get started with watercolor, which I appreciate

Cons:

The materials in this kit are really cheap

The Project instructions are super lean- if you don't already know how to paint, this set isn't going to help you much

These don't really handle like watercolors do, they  handle better a bit thicker, so sorta like a cross between a very cheap gouache and a very cheap watercolor

Final Verdict:

Realistically, this is not a good set of watercolors.  I wouldn't recommend you go out and buy this set.  But, like with the Michaels watercolor kits with the preprinted lineart, I actually had fun just kinda noodling around with these watercolors and painting.  Sometimes working with bad art supplies frees you up to make, because you figure it's not going ot turn out as anything you'd be proud of anyway, so you can just sorta let that go and mess around.
