Sometimes it feels like a shame to use the nicer paper for these reviews, it feels like it's going to be wasted.
Getting Arteza vibes
Swatching:
48 piece pro set:
Starting out on their card, after activating:
Colors are really saturated and bright when wet- right now I'm torn between getting dye based cheap watercolor vibes (sorta like the Meeden set) or Meiliang (more like Schiperrer Farben, really) vibes.
The colors dry a lot dustier
Swatching on Blick Cottonrag Paper:
Go down kinda desaturated and dusty? These have also dried out, so they're not as 'activated' and gloopy. If you're going to use these, I guess I recommend not activating them bc they gloop up
So on the nicer paper, their flaws are more apparent. Colors dry dusty- not as vibrant. Not really seeing any granulation, except for maybe what the page forces. Colors FLOOD into the water, which is pretty indicative of dye-based watercolor. The neutrals are weird and funky- just feel off compared to what they should be- another sign of dye-based watercolors since neutrals are usually really cheap to produce (earth pigments) and shouldn't need Lake pigments or Hues.
THAT SAID:
If you find THIS SET at Walmart, and Royal Langnickel isn't selling their Essentials folding palette (basically Superior), it's probably going to be the best you're going to find at Walmart, since their watercolor options are limited and kinda poor.
I really don't think this set is going to hold up to color mixing
38 Piece Cakes
These look so chalky. They were so light and became a lot darker after I spritzed them.
These are very chalky and weakly pigmented. Between the two, I would not recommend this set; it behaves very poorly and isn't worth your money.
The 38 Piece watercolor cake set is not moving forward to later rounds because it behaves very poorly, and I know it will make me snarky. If you guys would like to see a review where I put a cake set through ALL the paces, let me know in the comments, but be prepared, I will probably get very sassy in that video.
Color Mixing (Pro-Half Pans)
Atomic:
The ultramarine blue (sapphire) is really weak; it has minimal pigmentation or coverage. Otherwise, colors mix ok, at least, they ARE mixable; you can get secondary colors, except if you want to mix anything with Sapphire or the neutrals. I was not able to really mix a Payne's grey; two of the resulting colors are kinda pretty, but not Payne's grey, and I do that as a test.
Optical:
Yes, you can technically glaze them, but everything dries chalky, so I wouldn't recommend glazing or layering techniques too much.
Lift Test
Everything lifts about the same
Wet into wet test-
These fall apart as soo as there's a significant amount of water. These are really weak and desaturated; it was challenging to get much color.
Many of the colors dry even lighter; these watercolors are full of extenders.
48 Piece Set- Who is this set for?
POSSIBLY brush letterers who want to practice or are only going to photograph their work while it's wet and more vibrant. POTENTIALLY cardmakers or people who like to paint in coloring books because there's a wide selection of colors.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
Palettes are reusable
If you're working very saturated, these might work for you
A wide choice of colors, including skin tones, so you don't necessarily have to do a lot of color mixing
Not bad for Walmart (if you find them at Walmart)
Cons:
Overpriced for what they are
Dye-based watercolors
Better out there for the same price or cheaper
Music:
Sunny Travel- Nico Staf
A New Orleans Crawfish Boil- Unicorn Heads
Waltz in Low Light- Nat Keefe & Hot Buttered Rum
Tranquility- Kevin MacLeod
The Story of One Life
Sunset Dream- Cheel
