this is gonna be a long comment so bear with me 52:11-52:24 rachel reid (the author) wrote a version of this scene from ilya's perspective and ilya was actually late because he was in the bathroom trying to calm himself and stop panicking over seeing shane for the first time after months. but of course when shane says ilya was late cause he was busy with someone he just says nothing and lets shane think it's true, in the book he even smirks when shane says that. those walls are HIGH. while he's in the bathroom he also thinks he could really stand to get laid tonight because he'd "love to stop thinking for a while". also, he spends the whole 6 months that he didn't talk to shane thinking about him, and then during this episode in the last scene he's actually nervous before shane comes over and wonders why cause he doesn't usually get nervous before hookups. after shane comes and gets on the bed, ilya leaves the room to get vodka and this is a snippet from his thoughts at that moment "He shouldn’t have invited Hollander to his room. They’d managed to avoid each other for months and Ilya could have simply let that continue. Forever. Because that was what made sense. Shane Hollander sprawled out on Ilya’s bed, offering himself as a fucking prize, did not make sense. The way Ilya was more tempted to gather Hollander in his arms and hold him all night than fuck him didn’t make sense. The way Ilya knew that if he kissed him he’d never stop didn’t make sense. He needed to be careful tonight." later he also says "why does it have to be you, why are you so perfect, it's awful" while shane is doing Some Stuff to him but he says it in russian so that shane won't understand

fuoliy

This was such a lovely reaction, Shane is definitely trying to get more vulnerable and the small details in acting from Hudson are such a treat in portraying that, as an exemple is when Ilya mentions that being boring is genetic because Shanes father reads the New Yorker and Shane reacts simply and softly with " wow, genetic" , that part never fails to give me the feeling that Shane is falling hard for Ilya and Ilya as well for Shane but he is trying really hard to deflect it with lust cus that's how he learned to cope with it, I can't wait to see you react to episode 3, it's gonna be a surprise for how things are gonna unfold further on with these characters, lots of love ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Bryson

It warms my heart to see just how well you understand Ilya. I knew this show would get your tears flowing sooner than later, haha. I'm SO excited for you to see episode 3, and you should definitely bring some wine along for future episodes! Hudson’s eyes kill me every time in the bathroom scene. I’ve watched this show multiple times and been just fine, but for some reason, watching this episode with you left me almost speechless. Honestly, I think the latter half of this episode resurfaced some of the feelings and paralyzing fear I experienced as a closeted teen in South Carolina. Jacob Tierney is a genius, and it’s no question why Rachel Reid trusted him with this adaptation. Connor and Hudson are absolute magic together. I’m too emotionally drained to be clever right now, so thanks, Danny, for being hot again. That’s all I got! 😭😭😭😂😂😂

Jaxx Cordd

With Ilya, its so sad that he can't even entertain the thought of what he wants, because he is so convinced that it doesn't matter and he's stuck where he is. Can't wait for your Ep 3, please Friday if you can...

Parker

NOT a spoiler: someone might’ve already warned you, but episode 3 shifts focus from Shane & Ilya… It’s off-putting at first/feels like it’s throwing off the progression of the plot, but it’s only for ONE episode, and VERY important to the story!

Liam Mcfarlane

Oh if Danny's already crying, I fear he's not going to survive haha

Francesca :)

this episode breaks me!! i mean vegas scene? super hot but also heartbreaking :( cant wait for you to watch ep.3 not many people love it but its kind of my fav bc i relate so bad! really happy to see you enjoying and loving it as much as i do<33

Francesca :)

im from argentina so any day is good bc i work in the mornings and when you post these its 6pm here so it really works for me!

Zoe

this episode grew on me so much. i feel so sorry for ilya; that scene in the bathroom when they reunite made me quite angry the first time but now i feel like he just didn't have any mental space really. dealing with too much shit, does not know better. and also it is really shown how much he adores shane. something i don't see people comment at all is how he watches shane on tv, like that commercial (keep this in mind - i don't think this is necessarily a spoiler, cause it changes nothing - but this is a recurring thing in ilya) it's like this quiet support behind close doors that shows just how much he cares about shane, and how proud he is, and how he tries to know things about shane his way, without needing to be brave and have the vulnerability to ask. i just think is beautiful. in this show, truly the little details are EVERYTHING. i think that there's not a single thing that is not intentional and i love that.

Rachel Aaron

Idk if this has been mentioned and I noticed you didn’t comment on it so you may know, but the only time they are hooking up is when we see it. I know some other people thought it was happening besides what we saw but it hasn’t. So there first time and all there hooking up moments is only happening as we see so they really are going months or years without ever seeing each other and being with each other.

Rachel Aaron

Also fun fact the final scene in this episode in Vegas was there first scene they filmed together.

Larissa🌸🪩

You crying makes me cry- we are empathetic messes, Danny😆😭 Your commentary is easily making the show 500x better for me, I love that you get goofy and vulnerable all at once💙 Idk how anyone who's gay can watch these reactions, its too much hot on one screen LOL😂🔥

Lindsey T

Thursday, Saturday, Monday and Wednesday sound perfect!

Liam Robb

I've watched this show so many times and still get hit hard by the "we didn't even kiss" text

Allie

First of all love the shirt

Emma Lemay

My papa has dementia, and today we got some bad news that he is deteriorating quite quickly now. I cried when you talked about your grandpa. I'm so sorry you are going through that, and I wish your family all the best.

Allie

I love how cheeky and out of pocket Ilya can be while also always always always making sure Shane is comfortable and ok with everything when they’re intimate

Allie

Haha fun fact: in the book Shane actually buys a whole separate apartment building in Montreal for meeting with Ilya. But that’s not realistic for the show’s budget so in the show Ilya gets to go to Shane’s actual apartment from the get go

Allie

Shane’s teary eyes in the Vegas bathroom scene always punch me in the gut. Hudson did so good

vinny

I’m glad everyone can equally agree how special Shane is. He’s proof that you don’t have to be loud or larger than life to matter. He’s awkward, stuck in his routines, and by a lot of people’s standards, kind of boring. But watching the way he moves through the world the way he tries so hard to do everything right, the way he hides his anxiety, the way he slowly starts to believe he doesn’t have to be perfect to be loved really stays with me. He makes me feel like the parts of myself I’ve always called boring aren’t flaws I need to fix. He reminds me that being different, quiet, or a little out of step doesn’t make you less important or less worthy of being seen. It doesn’t make you a side character in your own life. Because of him, I’m starting to realize that I can be exactly who I am rigid routines, awkward moments, social stumbles, all of it and still deserve love, joy, and a full life. He genuinely isn’t just a character to me. He’s a reminder that I’m already enough and can be whoever I choose to be. Glad you’re enjoying the show as much as I did man !!

Whatsmyline

Dude. There is nothing more attractive and heartwarming and hopeful than a straight man who is exhibiting the amount of positive masculinity that you do. Like…in an ideal world that is a low bar but we unfortunately live in the real world where even the men in my life who are socially pro-LGBTQ+ have personal discomfort watching gay sex scenes etc in media. Seeing you react to this show and those scenes be being like “yeah, this is sexy” or “he’s HOT!” With no qualms or discomfort is a breath of fresh air. Fucking king, you are! Furthermore your empathy! Obsessive nerd that I am, I’ve watched a lot of HR reactions. Gay, lesbian, straight male and female…I’ve NEVER seen anyone get emotional like you did (and I did as well) during the MLH awards bathroom scene. Your emotional IQ and empathy is clearly off the charts and I am so here for it! That empathy and emotion is another thing we so rarely see and value in men, and particularly straight men. I’m not trying to reduce you to your gender or sexuality, so I apologize if it seems like it. I’m highlighting it because, as you’ve noted, there’s so much hateful shit in America and the world right now and seeing an example of a straight man in America (and I know there are many others, the opposites are just louder) who embraces and is not afraid to show his emotions and slams the door on the hatred poisoning our society gives me so much hope and joy. So bless you! And you are fucking WEARING that TSwift tank- long live rock Taylor! 😂❤️

Mia89

Hudson and Connor are such great actors. I’ve watched the series multiple times and every time I pick up some new nuance they put into these roles. Again another great reaction.

Kalisoul

The dad punched him and he now has a legal defense go fund me cause the POS you were talking about got punched and then sued one of the dads.

j-l

im so sorry about your grandpa danny :( sending so much love your way <3

heather

i love this ep!! the bathroom scene breaks me every time i watch it. thank you for always showing your vulnerability, it’s so refreshing! :)

Kalisoul

25%🤯🤯🤯

George 🪐

Wow! So mani comments that I don’t really know what else to say. Man, this show hits hard sometimes. Seeing all this MFs around the world wanting to take rights from us and being hateful is really heartbreaking and it makes me fill so powerless at times. I love Ilya because you can tell he’s sweet and he really cares about Shane (plus he’s sooooooooooo fucking hot 🥵 hahaha). However, the way Shane looks at him and tries to make conversation just melts my heart and makes me want to have that. It’s a roller coaster. Can’t wait for episode 3. I think it’s so gooooooood!!!

Kalisoul

Another term for “high functioning” is “high masking”.

Tom Duarte

Juke, i'm so sorry about your grandpa, i've been taking care of my mother for over 10 years now, she has alzheimer and dementia, is really difficult for everyone involved, I wish you and your family all the strenght and love in the world <3 Thank you for this amazing reaction and for always being an ally for our community, this show is very special for us, can't wait for ep 5 and 6 reactions <3

Adriana

WE DIDN’T EVEN KISS!!! ugh breaks my heart every time 😭 this episode is so pivotal cause we forget that this was just supposed to be a fun fling with your rival and then feelings start to develop and they both don’t know how to navigate it it’s so touching

Bryson

Btw, I’m glad you asked about lube! 🤣 Here’s the explanation: Jacob Tierney purposely opted out of showing them using lube or Shane prepping to bottom so it wouldn’t interrupt the flow of the episodes. He wanted to treat gay sex in this show exactly as heterosexual sex would be treated in any other show or rom-com, where they opt out of showing certain steps as well. Some people were complaining about it, and Jacob responded with this quote: “This is not a documentary. You wanna watch them douche? You want me to include Shane in the bathroom for half an hour with the fucking enema? That’s not what we’re doing here. We’re skipping that part.” I do also want to mention that Jacob Tierney is a gay man, for context—in case you didn’t already know.

Liam Robb

Wait, has anyone told Danny yet to pay attention to the fake hockey team logos and how they are designed to look certain ways because I feel like he'd get a kick out of it lol

Kristen

To start, I’m so sorry to hear about you grandpa 🫶 my nana dealt with dementia for many years before she passed and it was really tough. This story is so beautifully written because both Ilya and Shane seem to be softies deep down but are so terrified to be vulnerable enough to show it for different reasons. Shane putting so much pressure on himself to not only be the best at hockey, but also, if you remember his mom’s chat with him in Ep. 1, being a good role model for other asians to look up to since they don’t see themselves in these positions often. Then with Ilya, he has so much pressure from his dad to be great at hockey to feed into his pride and ego. He also has so much pressure from his brother because Ilya’s career is what is supporting his family back home in Russia. Even though it’s a complicated relationship, you can tell that he still wants to feel accepted and loved by them. Hudson has such an incredible way of using little micro movements to really convey emotion and Connor’s ability to portray the asshole tough guy while also letting us in to see those moments of real genuine care…. UGH! It’s all just so good.

Mikey

Thank you so much Danny for your kind words and empathy 🥹🫶 And so sweet of you to even ask us which days you should react to the rest of the episodes 😆 Do what works for you and don't overextend yourself!!! Just happy to get to see you react to this show 🥰

Luke Eberhart

I'm sure others have probably mentioned it, but Rachel Reid, the author of the books, wrote an extra chapter explaining the Las Vegas scenes at the end of this episode from Ilya's perspective (the show is more of Shane's POV). I'd definitely recommend checking it out. It's free online here: https://www.rachelreidwrites.com/news/2024/3/24 As someone that identifies with Shane more than any of the characters on the show, I find this episode to probably the most devastating of the series. It starts out so promising for him. After two years of bantering over text (during the montage), he finally has his first experience having penetrative sex with a man and it goes amazingly well. It's hot and intimate and it's clear that Shane and Ilya have a deep connection, and it's clearly not just sex. And then, almost immediately, the Olympics happen and Shane gets ghosted by Ilya. I understand that things are very complicated for Ilya and I also mostly understand why Ilya has to shut Shane out for a while, but as someone that has been ghosted by someone I was very close to, I think it really is one of the worst forms of rejection that someone can experience. I know that Shane and Ilya weren't "together," but they had a years'-long relationship (even if it was mostly just texting at that point). To have that disappear in the blink of an eye had to have crushed Shane. And I think we see that very clearly on Shane's face when he watches Ilya win the cup (some superb acting from Hudson there). He's happy for Ilya, but also incredibly sad that he seemingly has no relationship with him anymore and can't share in that joy with him. In Vegas, in the bathroom, he rightfully tells Ilya how much he was hurt by him. But Ilya, with his incredible charm, quickly turns the conversation back to sex. Rather than apologize, he gives Shane what he thinks he wants ... a promise of more sex. I know that scene is a fan favorite, and I enjoy it too, but from Shane's perspective, I think it probably kind of reinforced the heartbreak. Keep in mind that Ilya has a deserved reputation as a "lady's man." He sleeps with a lot of people (mostly women) and everyone, including Shane, knows that. So when Ilya promises to "fuck him" later, I don't know that it really makes Shane feel special. The way Ilya promises it, it almost comes off as if he is doing Shane a favor ... giving him what he thinks he wants to make him feel better, not because Shane is special to him in any way but because that is what Ilya does ... fuck people. We know better, but to Shane, I imagine he feels like after that conversation, even with the kiss, that he is just another one of Ilya's "fuck buddies." And that is reinforced later when they have sex but don't kiss. I think Shane comes away from that experience thinking there's no chance of ever having anything more with Ilya. He won't give up the chance to hookup with him when he can, but he can't let himself think that he's special to Ilya any more or that they can ever be more than fuck buddies. It's too painful to think otherwise. So he puts up an impenetrable wall and won't let himself be vulnerable to feeling anything more for Ilya after that point (or at least he tries). It's devastating because, to Shane, Ilya was so much more than a fuck buddy before that point. And, because of what happens in this episode, he has to convince himself that it can never be more than that.

tia

Omg I hate to see you cry :(( I'm so sorry about your grandfather

mik

Jeremiah Geans

Can’t wait for episode 3 one of my favorite episodes

Ana

I've seen some people on the internet complaining about the sex scenes being too explicit or too many, and I completely disagree. The sex is a portrayal of how they feel about each other and how their relationship is evolving. In this episode, this becomes even clearer. They were hot for each other from the very start, but apart from raw desire, there was also a lot of tenderness. Ilya has been with another guy before, and he has a more dominant personality, so he takes the lead in most of their sexual interactions. The first time they have penetrative sex, I love that he gets Shane's consent and makes sure to ask if he's okay and enjoying himself, because that alone also shows that he cares. (And obviously that's how it should always be - and i'm glad they're setting up a good example for everybody watching out there). At the Olympics, everything changes. He's in a hostile environment, has to hide who he really is, and has to deal with failing his country's and family's expectations. So he pushes Shane away. But it's very telling when he turns Sasha down, gets his phone, and stares at Shane's texts. I see that as him admitting to himself that other people just don't do it for him anymore. He has real feelings for Shane and won't be able to stay away from him. So in Vegas, Ilya goes after Shane, but with his walls up. He can't give up on him, but he also can't give anything but sex, and he makes that very clear. This time, the tenderness and care are gone. Shane feels that as another type of rejection and decides to distance himself from the relationship as well. And that adds another layer of complexity to the whole story.

Anni

I am sooo sooo sorry about your grandpa that made me cry when you started tearing up talking about him. My Grandpa had a terminal brain tumor which also led to him having dementia. He was one of the cleverest guys i knew. Taught himself several languages just for fun when he was younger and he had such a gentle soul. The hardest part for me was to see all that disapear what made him him. :( He was just an empty hull at the end and it was almost mercyfull that he could go. Enjoy every good day you have with him!

Chanell

My condolences on the the loss of your grandmother. My grandfather had early stages of dementia and I recently lost him as well. Just like you said, it is a rough battle to watch your loved one slowly slip away and I don’t wish that experience on anyone. ❤️ every moment is precious!

j-l

imo saturday would be better than sunday for ep 4 but whatever works the best for you!!

Ashli Childs

The Vegas scene bedroom being one of the first scenes that they shot and it’s that intense blows my mind. 😩

Ashli Childs

Danny sending you so much love for your grandpa. I lost my grandpa August 2024 due to complications with dementia. Just know that my heart goes out to you and anyone who has loved ones dealing with it. All deaths are hard but for some reason that death was the worst for me. Hugs, love, and positive thoughts 🤍

Joel Amatore

This show’s gonna emotionally rock your world Juke! Hopefully without coming across super parasocial; watching things along with you over the years you can get a sense of someone’s spirit and how much certain things/themes will move them. Obviously you wear your heart on your sleeve regardless, there doesn’t have to be too much sense between the lines but I hope everyone understands and agrees. I can’t wait for the way you’ll respond to this show’s deep honouring of love, vulnerability and the difficult and humorous parts within it all. So keen! ❤️❤️

Gracie

Omg I know this was an emotional episode and I got emotional seeing you emotional but you made me giggle with your expression at 24:40 😆 im so glad im finally getting to watch this now after seeing all the hype about it 😭❤️

mari

after you finish the show and get to reacting to interviews, i hope you love the actors as much as we do, cause there are way too many interviews i would love for you to react to lol. there are 2 videos that people will ask you to react to first cause it's always the same 2 (one if them is them reading thirst tweets and the other is the compliment battle), but i hope you react to some more stuff after that as well cause there are so many other great ones, specifically some of their solo interviews as well. i know im getting ahead of myself here but still, it seems like you'll finish the show pretty quick so its not that far into the future lol

AmberNicole

I am loving these reactions! I love this show and I can't wait to watch you react to the rest of the episodes 😊

Reinaldo Aguilera

I actually can’t wait for you to see episodes 5 and 6, they will hit you like a ton of bricks just like they hit us

john adams

to see how vulnerable you were reacting to this tells me how special you are! your commentary made me see through this episode trough an empathetic lens! much love bro. you're a legend. Looking forward to all your reactions

gabi mia

i love your reactions so much you're so sweet :) we rock with you because you rock with us

Jol

Hi love your reaction to this show. Love you allow your emotions to show. Can’t wait to see part 3 with you.

Ameth

Thank you for these reactions. I'm so looking forward to 4 5 and 6

MyopicFaidon

I’m just in the beginning of the episode but you asked about the opening track and I see no one responded. It’s Wet Leg - Mangetout. They are a UK punk rock band, started as a duo of two female friends (guitar, vocal) but after the first album they retained their touring band as permanent members and they are now a full band. They exploded in the UK 3-4 years ago with their song Chaise Longue. I’m not personally a massive fan of this genre but they’re really strong and badass!

Gz

before I can continue on,, as long as you know youre representation means so mutch,, cant thank you enough

Eddie

The world would be a much better place if we had more people like you, I mean that. You seem like such a kind and empathetic person

James Henry II

LMAO the tip about the non dominant hand is so real though 😭😭😂😂

Anna

Omg, ur face at the end of this episode makes me think the rest of this is gonna kill you

Gz

love you Juke...

Matthew Whelpton

You're a lovely guy. Thank you for being an ally.

Marisa Jo Miller-McDowell

Oh, the US definitely did not win at the Socio Olympics. We won this year and so tired of all the hate. The boys played hard and they deserve the win criticism sure but not hate. First time US won sense miracle im what 1979.

jada ⭐️

ilya LOVES that man’s titties 😭

Lee Lou

Such a thoughtful, empathetic reaction. Thank you👏

Roxanne 🇲🇽LIL CRIP🇲🇽 Kemmerer

I stumbled onto your HR short and thought I'd give a new reactor (new to me) a watch since theres no such thing as too much Heated Rivalry lol..... Well, I may have come to your Patreon for these reactions but I gotta say I'm OBSESSED with who you are as a person! Not sure what other content there is to check out here but regardless I'm not going anywhere. Frfr, its so refreshing! Genuine, caring, understanding, and openly emotional men are a rarity (in my life experience anyway), so it still surprises me in the very best way to see 🥰 Love these reactions so far, and look forward to sticking around for more 🤘🏻
