I was so obsessed with that video for so long, but it’s been so long since then 🥹 I love the references to Marilyn and JFK

My mom loved John F. Kennedy soooo here I am!!🤭 So funny that was your nickname in high school, you do kinda resemble him in some ways for sure! Side note hearing my name in this video so many times made me laugh!🤣

This video is so well done. Her monologues are always written so well (so excited for ride and hope you cover her poetry album/book). I’m so confused why in interviews she always says she’s not an actress, because I feel like she always captures the feeling perfectly. And her face is so expressive. I love when she laughs too, she doesn’t do it much in videos but she has like the cutest laughing face. Fun fact, her sister Caroline (Chuck) is the blonde woman in the dancing party scene, that’ll be someone to look out for cause she’s in a couple of Lana‘s videos. She’s an important character in this deep dive so just keep that in the back of your mind. Also this is not the end of ASAP showing up in her music. We get two actual features from him in a later album.

I have a lot to say about this masterpiece so sorry about the essay 🤣Honestly the genius of the “National Anthem” video is that Lana is kind of doing two things at once, she’s romanticizing the American Dream and criticizing it at the same time. The whole video looks like this perfect fantasy of rich, glamorous American royalty. She plays both Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy because they represent two different versions of the “ideal American woman” people projected onto women in that era. (Madonna/whore complex)Marilyn is more the sexy Hollywood fantasy, while Jackie is elegance, wealth, family, status, etc. Lana switching between them kind of shows how women around power become symbols instead of just people. The song itself keeps connecting love, money, America, and fame “Money is the anthem” “Red, white, blue is in the sky” “Tell me I’m your national anthem” So the video turns all of that into visuals like the yachts, pearls, old money aesthetics, political power, designer clothes, family photos. It looks dreamy on purpose until the end with the JFK assassination scene and the poem. They basically reveal that the fantasy was never stable to begin with. All the beauty and wealth couldn’t actually protect them from tragedy. That’s why the ending feels so emotional and haunting compared to the glamorous beginning. the poem is important because it suddenly makes the whole video feel personal instead of performative. It’s also not a direct quote from Jackie.. It’s basically Lana writing in the voice of Jackie Kennedy after JFK’s death to make the whole fantasy suddenly feel human and tragic instead of just glamorous aesthetics. (Lana loves to write poetry for her music videos as you will see throughout the deep dive) Up until then everything feels like an aesthetic fantasy, but the monologue sounds like someone mourning a real person they loved. It turns the “American Dream” into something sad and temporary. I also think Lana was intentionally showing how America glamorizes wealth and powerful families almost like celebrities or royalty like you correctly noted in the reaction. The Kennedys were treated like this untouchable perfect family, and Lana leans into that image while also showing how constructed and fragile it really was. Even A$AP Rocky playing JFK feels intentional because she wasn’t trying to make a historically accurate recreation, she was making a modern pop culture fantasy version of America itself. The whole video basically feels like she’s saying this dream is beautiful… but it’s also fake, doomed, and built on image. her art is so smart and people don’t realize that just like with Taylor. I’ve been thinking about this for 10 years and still feel like I didn’t get everything lol

I defer my comment to Laurasr618. She communicated it all! I will just add that I'm right there with you on the rose garden thing. I'm so pissed at the way Trump has messed with the white house. It's symbolic of how he treats the country in general. He guts all the beauty of it and turns it into a gold clad tacky tribute to himself. Did you see how they're painting the reflecting pool in the mall blue? Like it's a swimming pool in one of his resorts? So gross. 🙄
