The maids have won over my heart with this one! The homage to Sailor Moon made the little girl in me super excited! Honestly, it was the crossover I wanted and I got it! 💗🕊️

I want to know everyone's opinion about this one. After doing research on the song and thinking about it after recording, I could see why, MAYBE, that this one isn't a fan favorite.

So many of their songs showcase their members in a much larger capacity so when you hear this one where it's not Akane's hardest or wildest performance, Misa is being Misa but not giving us a killer solo, and Kanami's solo seems short compared to the other tracks I've heard (not counting early works), I can see why it can fall "flat." I do find Saiki and Miku's singing unique and exciting in this one though. Their performance together creates an awesome power dynamic with them backing each other up.

...either way...I'm a fan of it. I am serious about needing a poster of that final scene in the music video!

FYI, I heard Saiki say that Sailor Moon was her favorite anime. Also, the video depicts when Covid separated them from their fans. Then they did their live stream concerts, where you see people watching them. Ending up with Covid being blasted away and them returning to be with their fans. “-ncho” is a suffix to give a cute feel to a name (usually with the ending vowel of “i”). “Kanami” becomes “Kanamincho” with a cute feel, and then it’s shortened to “Mincho”.

Saiki - Blooming Akane Domination Kanami - Alone MISA - Dice Miku - Thrill This was in the middle of Covid. Many theories about exactly what the MV placements were (maybe not pinacles, just significant moments - some not to do with the MV) My observation is that anime is in the mind ... past (recent past) and future. Reality WAS present. They had 2 wave of covid lockdown, second one that killed their dream of performing at Budakon (they were booked for it but was cancelled). Saiki is big fan of Sailor Moon.

Chalfo

note: they're in an older version of their outfits, in the 1st anime section and reality section but in their updated outfits at the end (the previous version to what they have now) ... this was them announcing their new outfits for the THEN upcoming tour. The Reality bit where people are watching are the online concerts (apparently Saiki pushed management to allow them to do online concerts so this is shown by her taking the lead, getting them all motivated)

I like the song, but there are other Band-Maid songs that I like better, but I do LOVE the symbolism of the music video. Saiki apparently led the way out of the covid gloom for them - that's why everyone except Saiki is so unsure at the start of the live action, then Saiki rallies them and they realize that yes they CAN play music and do live shows once again. I read somewhere that during a rehearsal, Akane did something odd on the drums, then Saiki looked at her and said "what was that? Dan, dan, diddy dan dan?" and then we can just imagine Miku pulling out her notebook and creating some new lyrics. In the live, did you notice that the big screen showed the same kind of vertical split screens of each member as in the MV (which is also a callback to the Day of Budokan show where they used this technique)? -- See Spadeas' comment also, since I forgot the part about Miku encouraging them at first, then it was Saiki's turn...

For me and many others, this song is a Band Maid battle cry. You have to remember, this came out shortly before their 2022 US tour and right after Covid restrictions started lifting. We had all been couped up and clamped down - necessarily so - and we were all waiting to be Unleashed, both band and fans. The power and the emotion of all of that is very much conveyed in this song and especially this video. I like to call this Band Maid's "Eff you Covid!" song. When this video came out, I already had my tickets ready for the October tour and hearing and seeing this video really pumped me up! The band battled through all of Covids hardships, they kept in touch with their fans and vice versa. When you see people watching Band Maids videos on their phones and PCs and TVs, it symbolizes this. Even through the crushing disappointment of Budokan being cancelled, they knew their fans were still there for them. Nothing was going to keep us apart! Because it is About Us, after all. Not band, not fans, Us, all of us. Seeing them live again was an explosion of love and pent up emotion! Yes! Fuck you Covid! Step aside, the Band Maid bus is coming through! I absolutely love this song!

Also in the Anime part, when they are joining Miku in the sky, notice the banana that Akane is eating and all the little hearts coming out from Kanami when Saiki arrives! 💞💞💞

Charles Coleman

Kanami is called Mincho because it is a nickname given to her by one of her first guitar instructors. It means "Shorty" in Japanese, but in a friendly, complimentary way. and yeah, she's short, LOL! Not as short as Miku, but she's short. She sometimes goes by Kanamincho, but loves being called Mincho. 🥰🥰🥰

Rick

When they came to the US before Covid, they weren't as well known. So I was able to meet them. They are all TINY!

Charles Coleman

As for those who don't like this song as well as others, it's okay. It doesn't have to be your favorite, no worries. But for those who think it lacks the fireworks that other Band Maid songs have, maybe so. But one thing about Band Maid is this. They will always serve the song and do what makes it better. They won't show off just to show off. The song comes first, ego take a seat.

Charles Coleman

I did too! I saw them at Echoplex in LA 10-1-2019 - their last US show before Covid hit. The meet and greet was so special! Yes they are tiny, but despite the language barrier, the mutual admiration was impossible to miss. They are exactly the kind of people you always want your heroes and idols to be.

One of the theories I've seen about the clip is that during the animated phase at the beginning, everyone seems dejected or distraught (first lockdown), until Miku in her pigeon form brings them the light. A black wave overwhelms them (second lockdown and cancellation of the budokan). Once back to reality, this time it's Saiki who cheers everyone up and we see Miku look at her before resuming her usual smiling attitude. This would be supposed to show how this “Covid” part went for them, Miku lifted them the first time, but after a second shock, it was Saiki who lifted them this time. Which shows for me that our two singers are a bit of the driving force of this group. Band-Maid is a group of friends turned sisters, who have no leader, but two beautiful people propelling the rest of the group. Oh and if you look at Super Maid Akane's costume, when they all turn their backs on us, the ribbons she has look like the Band-Maid logo, I think it's cool. As for the song, I really like its message, to pursue your dreams, grit your teeth and not sink, because even those who are successful, have been pro for ten years, keeps new goals in mind that they have not yet achieved but promise to take us with them. It's a beautiful song to give us the courage to continue, and given the context of it, a very beautiful message for them as for us.

As others have tell you, the video tells part of the band's fight against its difficulties. At first success seemed elusive, they themselves have sometimes commented on how close they came to disbanding. The first black spot of despair disappears thanks to Miku's perseverance and energy; without her leadership, without Thrill, they would have disappeared almost before they began. Then when they were at the top, when they were hired to play at Budokan on Japan's national day, covid and depression arrived. And even Miku got lost. The second stain of despair disappears thanks to Saiki, she was then their guide and their pillar. Without her stolidity and determination, and without the help of all the fans in the world who did not stop supporting them from the distance, the band would have been lost. It is a beautiful story with a moral: for times of crisis... two queens are better than one.😁 Thank you NittPicc!💕

Dan Dan Di Di Dan Dan ;) hehe

Prutgardin

Kanami's riff through her Eventide Harmonizer is on the backing track. Both Miku and Kanami are playing the chords under that ;)

Bill Hallisey

Okay Princess NittPicc, If Band-Maid did an anime series, would you want to be in it and, if so, what kind of character would you be?

Glen Kelley

Nice reaction and the dark shadows sort of represents covid, which in Japan came in two waves, so you see the first one, locking them away, then Miku flying around like it's over, but then it came back harder. They have said in interviews that it was very hard being separated from each other during this period. They said they used to call each other all the time and just leave the call open for all day. The video also shows when they started doing live streams, both for themselves and for the sans. Then finally they are :unleashed" (sailor Moon part).

Vlad the Maidiac

There was also a famous photo session when the Maids actually cosplayed Sailor Moon, copying their poses. So, Sailor Moon is definitely an important anime for them. The same as K-ON, from which they copied that idea of drinking tea together while making music. This scene is inserted here in Unleash!!!!! anime from DOMINATION MV, the one with Akane sitting at the table with tea and cookies. They have the same scene also at the start of Non-Fiction Days MV, and in Manners MV, shortly, in the middle, with only Miku and Saiki at the table.

Vlad the Maidiac

Also, it's interesting to note that it was Miku with her "cluppo" project which brought light to all the Maids during the first wave of COVID, but then Miku is drowned by the gloom and darkness again, and the Maids despair. And it is Saiki who keeps singing no matter what, she becomes the pillar of strength to them all, and makes them all willing to continue fighting. After which they all become Sailor Moon characters, turn into a mighty gun and shoot at the black evil COVID which envelopes the Earth, and dispel this dark cloud. So, we must be thankful to the Maids that finally COVID was burned down and banished 😍

Vlad the Maidiac

If you would ask me randomly, what is my favourite BAND-MAID song, I would never come up with Unleash!!!!! in even the first ten. But I would never say it's "not so good." This song is amazing. It is a living eternal monument to themselves which they have raised. It symbolizes all their principles, and it is a mighty statement of what BAND-MAID is. It's a flag they are holding, the flag which will never be subverted no matter what.

Vlad the Maidiac

Watch Wave Potter's analysis of this MV: https://youtu.be/Hr8suSR6BNg?si=vCx_rHdDWCfZZLYN He makes a very deep analysis, picking up almost all Easter eggs and hidden meaning in it. Kanami vs Mincho. Many Western fans tend to read too much into it. They often say that when Kanami goes crazy on her guitar, she is switching to "Mincho Mode." In fact, it's an artificial separation. Japanese fans explained that it's just a common way of creating a "pet form" of a name. If you want to call "Kanamincho" as a little cutie, you call her "Mincho." Miku suggested during their first Online OKYUJI (it was July 23, 2020, when BAND-MAID did their first professional live stream on ZAIKO platform) that people use a hashtag #MinchoAwakens: #みんちょ覚醒 You may read the full translation of the MC section here (by hawk-metal): https://www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/hw8qqq/-/fyyrmor There is also a recording of this historical OKYUJI available. It took me some time to find it, but here it is: https://video.ploud.jp/w/nrC6MtVkAf2nfVyCfx6t4J nothing is lost in Internet 😎

There's a fan made anime series on Band-Maid by Ohrenje I think.

That was a precious reaction and i loved it 😭🤍 Thank you so much!

This is a tough question! I would love to be in it, first of all. In a dream world, I would love to be the American friend that hangs out with them. I’m still a musician, but would be a journalist who writes for music magazines, etc. If we are in my complete imagination, I would be there from their humble beginnings. Seeing them grow and always cheering them on, letting them know how much people love them and making sure they can see the world’s view of what they do. In other words, I would want to be the supportive friend who understands and believes in their musical purpose. I can imagine the hijinks I’d get into with each maid individually. Lol. 😂

NittPicc Reacts

That is what I am hearing then! It sounds so cool! I want to use one of those on my flute and see what it sounds like!

NittPicc Reacts

Thank you for the scenes of the maids. I was wracking/racking? my brain trying to remember each music video I’ve possibly seen!

Chalfo

Not sure you've seen Alone yet - you might have thought Kanami was in "Don't Let me Down" because of the Red window. Good point Vlad re: Cluppo - Miku and Thrill had no darkness. There's loads of interpretations/strands that could be argued (memories have a tendency to intertwine): Saiki's first lines are about coughing so hard (trouble with throat/surgery) Kanami's first accepted song was Alone (also she was crying - an also noteable tale from early days) First to reach out to Miku (reversed but could argue 'welcoming') MISA in Dice looking like she's wondering about chucking it in Thrill sets the pigeon free Don't know about Akane in Domination though Formation of the band can also fit into the symbolism though. Also ... love the scene on the starship Stage, gantries and lights and in their proper positions.

Vlad the Maidiac

Akane's scene at the start of Unleash!!!!! MV may actually be generic, just referring to her being a great eater. She's at a table with a lot of food, that's it. Also, a reference to K-ON anime, probably.

Vlad the Maidiac

Oh yes, ASTERISM! I currently listen mostly to only these two bands, BAND-MAID and ASTERISM. ASTERISM is not instrumental-only anymore, but so far, I am not such a great fan of their songs with vocals. They are nice, but while in instrumental music they just off the charts spectacular, in singing they are quite an average band. If you want a real treat, dear NittPicc, you should listen to their concept album GUERNICA. Or should we call it "rock opera"? 🤔 I would recommend first to read the story of Guernica, then you will understand what the songs are about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Guernica The names of the songs on this album actually refer to the events of that bombing: 3rd EP GUERNICA 2020.12.9 配信リリース M01:MUSIC M02:Gunfire M03:Faced/ Burned M04:Church M05:Day26 M06:000 https://asterism.asia/discography/detail/guerinica.html I just looked at my statistics on Last.fm, and I see that I listened to this album almost a thousand times. It's really an amazing masterpiece, a real contribution to the treasury of world music. ASTERISM just released a new album, PLANET OF METAL. But I listened to it only once so far. It's very proggy, and pretty strange at times. But I have a feeling I will love it, I do love prog rock... and prog metal even more so.

Prutgardin

She also uses it for her solo on 'Influencer' ;) I am sure you could make your flute sound otherworldly ;)

Bill Hallisey

I agree with hanging out with each of them for an off day. That would be a hell of a lot of fun. As a musician, I bet you would love to hang out with Kanami to understand her compositional and arranging skills.

Rick

That was 2014?? I had never seen those photos. I found or they found me in 2017 when YouTube dropped “Thrill” into my suggestions. Were you at the Chicago 2023 show? I think I recognize you from that show. I'm in Indianapolis (240 km south of Chicago). I wen to their show in Washington DC (Silver Spring Maryland)) becasue it was the most convenient for wher I am. After they sold out and added Chicago, I couldn't resist seeing them again when they were so close to where I live. In 2024 I saw them again in Nashville and Minneapolis (where I saw their becoming legendary live performance of "Hate"). I have so much respect for the ladies in this band, especially Miku--for her to be so determined to reach her goal. Also, the Band Maid fans are the best group of people. It's such a great, positive community.

Charles Coleman

The more you get to know about them personally and off stage, you just know there is a lot of hijinx going on. These ladies give it their all, but they love having fun, too.

Rebecca Haigh

My goodness, what a squeak!!!!! Lol

Rebecca Haigh

If I remember correctly, during an interview each member was asked about their favorite anime. I believe Saiki said her favorite was Yes, ‘Salior Moon’.

David Cook

MISA MISA MISA!!!!! MISA MISA MISA!!!!! I LOVE this song but some don't like the Guitar tone Mincho is using

Drive Time

I'm very late to this party, but I'll point out that the metrics seem to show this is indeed a fan favorite. The MV was the fastest ever to 1M views (now at 3.5M), and it's the #6 BM song according to Spotify's "popularity" metric. It has become a live staple and was the opener for the Jan. 2023 show at Tokyo Garden Theater which was their biggest show ever at that point. It's great live (I've seen it 7 times). The sudden vocal start is especially effective live IMO, and it's got a good audience sing-along part. I love Kanami's solo. To me it's unique in the way it's almost entirely a melodic solo to the point where it almost doesn't seem like a solo per-se ... until you see it live.
