I am not going to lie...it's hard to not get annoyed Yuuko. I understand she really wants to support her upperclassmen, Kaori but man...it's hard to watch.

The drama builds so much in the potential love(?) between Reina and Kumiko and the way the audition played out (no pun intended) was not what I was expecting.

Both trumpet players performed well, but one played more musical than the other. But because both were good, I did like that Taki-sensei gave Kaori the opportunity to take the solo since she sounds good anyway, but the fact that she gave it up. She understood what she heard was better. That's a true musician.

I cannot wait for more!!!

Yuuko is the stereotypical "Notice me Senpai" character. She is loud and a little bit tsundere, but it grows on you as the show continue. What makes the difference between an OK show and a really really good one is how the later moves you. It makes you recall past experiences and feelings that are important to you. The anime media has for all tastes but the most awesome shows makes you feel that I was talking about. Sound Euphonium!! is in my opinion one of them.

NittPicc, if you could get your hands on the sheet music for the introduction score for "Sound Euphorium", would you think about having your school band learn and perform it? You seem to like it.

With Taki-sensei he laid it out before the second audition started that the final choice was being made collectively by the applause of the other ensemble members, much like how the band's goal at the start of the year was decided by them. All with the aim of giving the band itself greater involvement in the decisions to foster their sense of independence, motivation & responsibility. Slightly more clapped for Kaori but far more didn't clap for either (presumably for a mixture of reasons, not just including the purely musical side), showing how it wasn't 100% clear cut as who had earned the right to play the solo. Both still comfortably met the required criteria, even if Reina's playing was noticeably more dynamic and lyrical. Taki framed it as asking Kaori if she would play the solo, which then gave her the opportunity to make the selfless decision that was best for the band. She knew that Reina played it better and by acknowledging it in front of everyone who also heard/witnessed their audition, they could no longer suggest any favoritism in the final choice. Yuko was upset because the entire episode was her desperately trying to deny the inevitable, all along intellectually knowing the underlying truth. She idolises Kaori not only for her ability & role as section leader/senpai, but also because of her strong moral character and gentle personality. She has witnessed Kaori making many sacrifices previously for the good of the band and from Yuko's perspective it feels like she's not getting the reward for all that effort over the three years. In almost any other year there wouldn't necessarily be a younger prodigious & driven, talented trumpeter like Reina joining the band and in those circumstances Kaori would've just been able to earn that soloist role. Yuko's reaction is certainly a little heightened for dramatic effect as a plot device, but she's also a teenager; so to an extent irrational behaviour also just comes with the territory.

A little comment about seniority in Japan. Seniority in Japan is really important to the point of sometimes being exploitative, for example in companies when a senior (senior being a person that is being working longer in the company) ask you for something(even work) is almost mandatory that you do it. Juniors has to always address their senior with formal language (unless the senior tells them to not do it) and is seeing as rude to no do so. So is really no surprising for me that some school bands in Japan have a seniority system for their participation in events and competitions.

The more I hear you speak on the Subject makes me more and more embarrassed that I am a JETHRO TULL mega-fan, they really got to you and I can't even apologize for them as it is NOT my place to do so (THEY should do it).

Lol. You’re so sweet! Don’t feel bad. Honestly it’s me being a big baby. It was the first video I got a lot of hate on and unfortunately it’s so easy to see all the hate vs the positive. Hopefully my skin grows super thick over the years. 😅

This episode was great. Although I didn't play in a band, I had a very similar experience in sport so I can relate - at high school the first and second teams for Rugby were made up of the top 3 years, so ages 15-18. When I was 15 I was the best player in my position but the coach selected based on seniority, the senior players had waited and it was now their turn and I would have to wait and play in the 2nd team instead. When I was in the top year we got a new coach who decided not only to not pick on seniority, but to select younger players even if less talented, so that by the time they were seniors they would have more experience... I almost quit the team in that final year after being passed over again, but I decided to stick with it and captained the 2nd team and showed the coach he was wrong...(the first team did terribly and continued to be terrible after I left!)

I don't know if anyone mentioned it in later chapters but Kaori's trumpet is played by a high school student while Reina's is played by a professional trumpet player.
