Do not watch this around your kids...I cussed way too much in this one, but how could I not!

It was too awesome to see Maomao reprimand the lady in waiting who royally effed up! Good for Maomao for standing up for what is right!

This story is a sad one, but it ends with light!

To rest on the pun kind of mood, I will say that this episode slaps. But yeah, THIS Maomao is what I saw in an video clip out of context, and convince me to watch the anime (with another video clip from way way later). Maomao is quite bland and monotonous in first impression, but when you know her you know she could be excited with thing like poison and medicine/drugs, here is another face of Maomao, the terrifying one. She may be a small cat, but she is a true tiger in the insiode. And once again, let me praise Aoi Yuuki for voicing this character, with all her talent, because even without the video, just by voice alone, you know you messed up and she is angry. Also, the end with Lihua carressing Maomao's sleepy face is just to show how appreciative, kind and motherly Lihua is, because yeah, Maomao is just 16/17 years old and rather small, so she might look childish, for a mother who just lost a child, Maomao must have looked like one for her at this moment. But yeah, despite her look and habit, growing in a brothel gave her some... knowledge, that might have helped Lihua (and Gyokuyou to not suffer sleep depravation because of the emperor anymore lol).

Episode 4 is an odd one. The story is awesome as usual but the animation is totally different from the rest. It was outsourced and the director named Chi-Na goes for a more fluid animation. That bitch slap was seriously fluid....rigth!!!...HE HE.

Those weren't tassels in the flashback, it was one of Maomao's 'big sisters' playing with the end of Maomao's pigtails. The advice given to Lady Lihua is only inferred and never explicitly stated (this isn't an 18+ show after all) but from what is implied it's a less common technique to use her curves/assets to entertain the Emperor in private. Given it's information coming from a renowned, experienced, worldly-wise & particularly busty high ranking courtesan, it would be reliable and could be one of any number of techniques. I'll leave it for the less naive/innocent of us to debate internally what is most likely being implied, certainly more than a couple of contenders spring to mind. I liked the comment from Lady Gyokuyou at the end of the episode about being able to recover from 'sleep deprivation' after Lihua's recovery, what with the reduced frequency of visits to the Jade Pavilion from the Emperor as a result. It's implied that she was picking up the slack as it were whilst Lihua was ill, so Maomao caring for Lihua might've even been partially her idea, hence the Emperor feeling so comfortable ordering Maomao to attend to Lihua in her presence. Whilst viewed through a harsh lense that could come across as less altruistic, if anything Gyokuyou appears to be a mixture of kindhearted and pragmatic, she understands her role in the palace, wants the Emperor to be happy/content and isn't just driven by pure ambition, where others be damned. As for Lihua's ladies in waiting, they are being shown to be firmly entrenched in their views to begin the episode with, they've had years of singular focus on keeping up appearances and making sure that the Emperor's attention stays with their mistress. They are educated by the standards of the day but learning & trained intelligence in areas of decorum, court politics & etiquette doesn't equal practicality and common sense. Their worldview is simply too narrow and sheltered compared with that of Maomao. For centuries it was thought that illness was spread by smell, hence them using incense to cover it up when fresh air is actually much better for the patient (think all the herbs in plague doctor masks). Same as the understanding of healthy balanced diets, how indulgent & rich your meals were was a reflection of your status, just look at the terrible diets of medieval aristocracy. There's a degree of arrogance with how her ladies' in waiting are behaving and the makeup element is the worst of it, but some of it simply not knowing better. Maomoa snapping was dangerous in someways, as she is of lower status, but she had been temporarily given authority via the Emperor that Jinshi then enforced. We basically got to see her professional disgust unleashed and it was ferocious.
